Prevalence of neurodevelopmental disorders in children with chronic hepatitis C in British Columbia.

BACKGROUND: Chronic hepatitis C (HCV) in children is primarily acquired through vertical transmission from an HCV-infected mother. The primary risk factor for chronic HCV in mothers is intravenous drug use, which, in pregnancy, is associated with increased risk of neurodevelopmental disorders in children. We explored the prevalence of neurodevelopmental disorders among children with chronic HCV in British Columbia. METHODS: Retrospective chart review was conducted for children actively followed for HCV at our centre between December 2020 and April 2024. Data were collected on demographic and

Clinicopathological characteristics and long-term outcomes of plasmablastic lymphoma in British Columbia.

Plasmablastic lymphoma (PBL) is an aggressive and rare subtype of non-Hodgkin lymphoma with no standard-of-care therapy. We reviewed all patients diagnosed with histologically confirmed PBL in British Columbia, Canada between 1997 and 2019. Overall, 42 patients were identified, including 15 (36%) positive for HIV and nine (21%) on chronic immunosuppression. Curative-intent treatment consisting primarily of cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine and prednisone was administered to 31 patients, of which 74% achieved response, however 61% relapsed after a median of 7.5 months. At a median foll

Mass care and the University of British Columbia: A new approach to disaster response.

In the event of a major earthquake affecting the lower mainland of British Columbia, the University of British Columbia (UBC) would be expected to provide emergency services and support to a population of over 51,000 students, 14,000 faculty and staff and over 10,000 UBC community residents and private companies who live and work on the Point Grey peninsula. This paper will detail how UBC would provide shelter, food, accommodation and support (together known as mass care) to this demographic.

Incidence of Multiple Sclerosis and Related Disorders in Asian Populations of British Columbia.

BACKGROUND: Global variation in the incidence of multiple sclerosis (MS) is generally ascribed to differences in genetic and environmental risk factors. Here we investigate temporal trends in the incidence of MS and related disorders in British Columbia, Canada, from 1986 to 2010, focusing particularly on the Asian ethnic subpopulation. METHODS: A longitudinal database was screened to identify newly diagnosed cases of MS and related disorders, including neuromyelitis optica and clinically isolated syndromes. Age-standardized, sex-specific mean annual incidence was calculated for the Asian and

Trends and sex differences in prescription opioid deaths in British Columbia, Canada.

Increasing rates of prescription opioid-related death are well documented in Ontario (ON) but little is known about prescription opioid-related harms in other Canadian provinces. Using administrative mortality data from 2004 to 2013, we found that rates of prescription opioid-related death in British Columbia (BC) were higher but more stable than published rates for ON over the same period. Methadone was involved in approximately 25% of the prescription opioid-related deaths in BC. The majority of prescription opioid-related deaths among men and women were unintentional. Men had higher overall

Thymoma: a population-based study of the management and outcomes for the province of British Columbia.

INTRODUCTION: Thymomas are rare neoplasms with variable clinical behavior. Our primary study aim was to analyze treatment practices and outcomes in a population-based cohort of thymoma patients. We hypothesized that stage I and II thymomas would have high cure rates with resection and adjuvant radiation, whereas locally advanced cases would benefit from multimodality therapy. METHODS: All patients, diagnosed with thymoma or thymic carcinoma in British Columbia between 1994 and 2009, were identified using the British Columbia Cancer Agency Registry. Chart review was used to collect demographic

Methadone use in relation to hepatitis C virus testing in British Columbia.

OBJECTIVE: We examined methadone use among a large cohort of individuals undergoing serologic testing for hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. METHODS: In British Columbia, community pharmacy methadone dispensations are recorded in the PharmaNet database and HCV antibody (anti-HCV) test results are recorded by the Provincial Public Reference Laboratory. Provincial HCV laboratory testing records from 1992 to 2004 were linked to methadone dispensation records from 1995-2006. We describe methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) among individuals undergoing anti-HCV testing between 1992 and 2004. RES

Healthcare use before and after a workplace injury in British Columbia, Canada.

OBJECTIVES: There is growing evidence that occupational injuries influence workers' emotional and physical wellbeing, extending healthcare use beyond what is covered by the Workers' Compensation Board (WCB). METHODS: The authors used an administrative database that links individual publicly funded healthcare and WCB data for the population of British Columbia (BC), Canada. They examined change in service use, relative to one year before the injury, for workers who required time off for their injuries (lost time = LT) and compared them to other injured workers (no lost time = NLT) and individu

Characteristics of primary biliary cirrhosis in British Columbia's First Nations population.

UNLABELLED: Primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) is a rare, autoimmune liver disorder characterized by progressive destruction of intrahepatic bile ducts, that results in portal inflammation, scarring, cirrhosis and, eventually, liver failure. Although considered rare in Canadian populations, it is the leading indication for referral for liver transplantation in British Columbia's First Nations population. Previously, an expanded review of all cases referred to the British Columbia Transplant Society for PBC was carried out comparing the demographics of those of First Nations descent with those not

Primary seminoma of the mediastinum. Cancer Control Agency of British Columbia experience.

Six patients with primary seminoma of the mediastinum were treated at the Cancer Control Agency of British Columbia during the period from 1970 to 1982. Primary treatment used was external beam radiotherapy. Only one patient received both radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Tumor dose ranged from 3000 cGy in 16 daily fractions in 3 weeks to 3500 cGy in 20 daily fractions in 4 weeks using parallel opposed fields on megavoltage machines. Two patients received additional small-volume boost to the superior mediastinum, delivering 500 cGy and 1000 cGy, respectively. All patients had complete resolution

FACTORS RELATING TO ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF MEDICAL STUDENTS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA.

The performance of medical students enrolled at the University of British Columbia from 1952 to 1961 is reviewed and related to certain descriptive factors available to the screening committee at the time of application. Almost 40% of enrolled students had academic difficulty in medical school; 16.4% failed a complete year. Since 91% of students who failed out, did so after freshman medicine examinations, these grades were examined for significant association with certain intellectual and non-intellectural factors. Sex and year of registration were not significantly associated with freshman pe

Detection of Atypical Bacteria, Including Mycoplasma Pneumoniae, British Columbia, Canada, 2013-2023.

BACKGROUND: Global reports suggest heightened Mycoplasma pneumoniae (Mp) activity during the fall of 2023. However, it is unclear how testing strategy changes and preventative measures implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic influenced these conclusions. The objective of this study was to summarize the effects of implementing a new respiratory testing method (Luminex NxTAG Respiratory Pathogen Panel [RPP]) on the rate of detection of three types of atypical bacteria (AB) (Mp, Legionella pneumophila [Lp], and Chlamydophila pneumoniae [Cp]) in British Columbia (BC), as well as to summarize case
