Modulating the interhemispheric balance in healthy participants with transcranial direct current stimulation: No significant effects on word or sentence processing.

Patient studies and brain stimulation evidence suggest that language processing can be enhanced by altering the interhemispheric balance: namely, preferentially enhancing left-hemisphere activity while suppressing right-hemisphere activity. To our knowledge, no study has yet compared the effects of such bilateral brain stimulation to both logically necessary control conditions (separate left- and right-hemisphere stimulation). This study did so in a between-group sham-controlled design, applying transcranial direct current stimulation over Broca's area and/or its homologue in 72 healthy partic

Language impairment in temporal lobe epilepsy: insights from a meta-analysis of fMRI studies.

Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is frequently associated with language impairment. This meta-analysis quantitatively synthesized data from 12 functional neuroimaging studies, including 390 TLE patients and 356 healthy controls (age range: 8.1-70 years; 57.2 % female), to identify language-related brain alterations in TLE. Compared to healthy controls, TLE patients exhibited hypoactivity within the left frontal language regions, including Broca's area, precentral gyrus, and middle frontal gyrus, suggesting language impairment across syntactic, semantic, and articulatory processes. In parallel, hyp

Tracking the development of agrammatic aphasia: A tensor-based morphometry study.

Agrammatic aphasia can be observed in neurodegenerative disorders and has been traditionally linked with damage to Broca's area, although there have been disagreements concerning whether damage to Broca's area is necessary or sufficient for the development of agrammatism. We aimed to investigate the neuroanatomical correlates of the emergence of agrammatic aphasia utilizing a unique cohort of patients with primary progressive apraxia of speech (PPAOS) that did not have agrammatism at baseline but developed agrammatic aphasia over time. Twenty PPAOS patients were recruited and underwent detaile

The distribution and origin of serotonin-containing fibers in the septal area: a combined immunohistochemical and fluorescent retrograde tracing study in the rat.

The distribution of 5-hydroxytryptamine (serotonin, 5-HT)-containing nerve fibers and terminals in the septal area of the rat was studied by using immunohistochemistry with specific antibodies to 5-HT in combination with fluorescent retrograde tracing methods. The 5-HT innervation of the septum is heterogeneous with regard to both the morphology of individual processes and the density of distribution in different parts of the septum. Three major classes of 5-HT like immunoreactive processes can be distinguished: 1) thin, convoluted fibers with small, round or elongated varicosities; 2) thick a

Functional activation during reading in relation to the sulci of the angular gyrus region.

Neurological studies suggest that the angular gyrus region of the inferior parietal lobule may be critical for reading. However, unambiguous demonstration of angular gyrus involvement from lesion and functional neuroimaging studies is lacking, partly because of the absence of detailed morphological descriptions of this region. On the basis of our recent anatomical examination of this region and a tightly controlled functional magnetic resonance imaging paradigm, the present investigation demonstrated reading-related activity in the region of the angular gyrus that lies between the central and

The focal alteration and causal connectivity in children with new-onset benign epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes.

The aim of the current study was to find the epileptic focus and examine its causal relationship to other brain regions in children with new-onset benign childhood epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes (BECTS). Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was performed in 66 children with BECTS and 37 matched control children. We compared the amplitude of low frequency fluctuation (ALFF) signals between the two groups to find the potential epileptogenic zone (EZ), then used Granger causality analysis (GCA) to explore the causal effects of EZ on the whole brain. Children with BECTS

EEG coherence measures during auditory hallucinations in schizophrenia.

We studied the change in EEG alpha-band average coherence between auditory hallucination (AH) and non-auditory hallucination (non-AH) states in seven auditory hallucinating schizophrenia patients. Four cortical regions were considered based on the existing dominant models for auditory hallucinations, the inner speech model and the central auditory processing deficit (CAPD) model. Coherences between electrodes located over Broca's area (BA 44/45) and Wernicke's area (BA 22/42) and between electrodes located over left-right temporal cortices were examined. There was no significant change observe

Afferents to anterior cingulate areas 24a and 24b and midcingulate areas 24a' and 24b' in the mouse.

Areas 24a and 24b of the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) play a major role in cognition, emotion and pain. While their connectivity has been studied in primate and in rat, a complete mapping was still missing in the mouse. Here, we analyzed the afferents to the mouse ACC by injecting retrograde tracers in the ventral and dorsal areas of the ACC (areas 24a/b) and of the midcingulate cortex (MCC; areas 24a'/b'). Our results reveal inputs from five principal groups of structures: (1) cortical areas, mainly the orbital, medial prefrontal, retrosplenial, parietal associative, primary and secondary

Aphemia: an isolated disorder of articulation.

Aphemia is a disorder with prominent speech abnormality. Since its description by Broca, there has been debate regarding the neuropsychological disorganization underlying aphemia: is aphemia an articulatory disorder or a language disorder? We describe a patient with markedly impaired articulation, but preserved receptive and written language function and buccal-facial coordination. The location of his stroke was in the left precentral gyrus, undercutting a small area of motor and premotor cortex. This case suggests that aphemia can occur as an isolated articulation deficit without language inv

Exploring the relationship between hallucination proneness and brain morphology.

BACKGROUND: Hallucinations, including both auditory and visual forms, are often associated with alterations in brain structure, particularly in specific language-related cortical areas. Existing models propose different frameworks for understanding the relationship between brain volume and hallucination proneness, but practical evidence supporting these models is limited. METHODS: This study investigated the relationship between hallucination proneness and brain volume in language-related cortical regions, specifically the superior temporal gyrus and Broca's area. A total of 68 participants,

Children's syntax is supported by the maturation of BA44 at 4 years, but of the posterior STS at 3 years of age.

Within the first years of life, children learn major aspects of their native language. However, the ability to process complex sentence structures, a core faculty in human language called syntax, emerges only slowly. A milestone in syntax acquisition is reached around the age of 4 years, when children learn a variety of syntactic concepts. Here, we ask which maturational changes in the child's brain underlie the emergence of syntactically complex sentence processing around this critical age. We relate markers of cortical brain maturation to 3- and 4-year-olds' sentence processing in contrast t

Classification of Overt and Covert Speech for Near-Infrared Spectroscopy-Based Brain Computer Interface.

People suffering from neuromuscular disorders such as locked-in syndrome (LIS) are left in a paralyzed state with preserved awareness and cognition. In this study, it was hypothesized that changes in local hemodynamic activity, due to the activation of Broca's area during overt/covert speech, can be harnessed to create an intuitive Brain Computer Interface based on Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS). A 12-channel square template was used to cover inferior frontal gyrus and changes in hemoglobin concentration corresponding to six aloud (overtly) and six silently (covertly) spoken words were coll

A focal brain-cooling device as an alternative to electrical stimulation for language mapping during awake craniotomy: patient series.

BACKGROUND: Functional mapping in awake craniotomy has the potential risk of electrical stimulation-related seizure. The authors have developed a novel mapping technique using a brain-cooling device. The cooling probe is cylindrical in shape with a thermoelectric cooling plate (10 × 10 mm) at the bottom. A proportional integration and differentiation-controlled system adjusts the temperature accurately (Japan patent no. P5688666). The authors used it in two patients with glioblastoma. Broca's area was identified by electrical stimulation, and then the cooling probe set at 5°C was attempted on

Mapping language function with task-based vs. resting-state functional MRI.

BACKGROUND: Use of functional MRI (fMRI) in pre-surgical planning is a non-invasive method for pre-operative functional mapping for patients with brain tumors, especially tumors located near eloquent cortex. Currently, this practice predominantly involves task-based fMRI (T-fMRI). Resting state fMRI (RS-fMRI) offers an alternative with several methodological advantages. Here, we compare group-level analyses of RS-fMRI vs. T-fMRI as methods for language localization. PURPOSE: To contrast RS-fMRI vs. T-fMRI as techniques for localization of language function. METHODS: We analyzed data obtained

Task load modulates tDCS effects on language performance.

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) effects in cognition are inconsistent across studies. This study aimed to discuss why typical models might be insufficient to explain these effects, and to investigate a brain state factor, task load, with behavioral experiments on phonological processing. The motor theory of speech perception states that motor codes for articulation take part in speech perception, a view sharpened by neuroimaging findings, which show that the motor role in phonological processing is weighted by the nature of the tasks. Three groups of 20 participants, each under

Alterations in the functional anatomy of reading induced by rehabilitation of an alexic patient.

OBJECTIVE: The goal of the study was to measure regional cerebral blood flow (CBF) in a stroke patient with acquired phonologic alexia before and after therapy using the Auditory Discrimination in Depth (ADD) program. BACKGROUND: After rehabilitation of acquired language disorders, functional imaging can detect activity in brain structures that do not mediate language during normal conditions. However, the anatomic correlates of recovery or rehabilitation from acquired reading disorders are largely undescribed. METHODS: Cerebral SPECT scans were obtained before and after the intervention wit

Association of formal thought disorder in schizophrenia with structural brain abnormalities in language-related cortical regions.

BACKGROUND: Formal thought disorder (FTD) in schizophrenia has been found to be associated with volume reductions in the left superior temporal cortex. However, there have been negative findings and some studies have also found associations in other cortical regions. METHOD: Fifty-one schizophrenic patients were evaluated for presence of FTD with the Thought, Language and Communication (TLC) scale and underwent whole-brain structural MRI using optimized voxel-based morphometry (VBM). Fifty-nine matched healthy controls were also scanned. RESULTS: Compared to 31 patients without FTD (global T
