Expression of N-CAM-180 and N-cadherin during development in two South-American anuran species (Bufo arenarum and Hyla nana).

Cadherins and N-CAM are Ca++-dependent and Ca++-independent cell adhesion molecules respectively. These molecules play a key role in morphogenesis and histogenesis. We determined the spatiotemporal pattern of N-cadherin and N-CAM-180 kDa expression by immunohistochemistry during development in two South-American anuran species (Bufo arenarum, toad and Hyla nana, frog). Both N-cadherin and N-CAM were not detectable during early developmental stages. Expression of N-cadherin appeared between the inner and the outer ectoderm layers at stages 19-20. At stages 24-25, N-cadherin was expressed in the

Lead and copper led to the dysregulation of bile acid homeostasis by impairing intestinal absorption in Bufo gargarizans larvae: An integrated metabolomics and transcriptomics approach.

Bile acids, as metabolic regulators and signaling molecules, play key roles in the regulation of host metabolism and immune responses. Heavy metals such as lead (Pb) and copper (Cu) are widespread environmental pollutants that threaten public health. However, the effects of heavy metals on bile acid metabolism and the underlying molecular mechanisms remain unclear, particularly for ecologically important amphibian species. In the present research, the effects of exposure to environmentally-relevant concentrations of Pb (250 μg/L), Cu (50 μg/L), and a mixture of both (Mix) on bile acid metaboli

The effects of chronic cadmium exposure on Bufo gargarizans larvae: Histopathological impairment, gene expression alteration and fatty acid metabolism disorder in the liver.

Cadmium (Cd) a highly toxic metal to human and wildlife health and it is hazardous to both terrestrial and aquatic life. In this study, we used RNA sequencing analysis to examine the effects of chronic cadmium exposure on liver lipid metabolism of Bufo gargarizans larvae. Tadpoles were exposed to cadmium concentrations at 0, 5, 10, 50, 100 and 200 μg L-1 from Gosner stage 26-42 of metamorphic climax. The results showed high dose cadmium (50, 100 and 200 μg L-1) caused obvious histological changes characterized by hepatocytes deformation, nuclear pyknosis, increasing melanomacrophage centers (M

Do toads have a jump on how far they hop? Pre-landing activity timing and intensity in forelimb muscles of hopping Bufo marinus.

During jumping or falling in humans and various other mammals, limb muscles are activated before landing, and the intensity and timing of this pre-landing activity are scaled to the expected impact. In this study, we test whether similarly tuned anticipatory muscle activity is present in hopping cane toads. Toads use their forelimbs for landing, and we analysed pre-landing electromyographic (EMG) timing and intensity in relation to hop distance for the m. coracoradialis and m. anconeus, which act antagonistically at the elbow, and are presumably important in stabilizing the forelimb during lan

The Heterogametic Transition in European Bufo Toads Switches the Sex Linkage of Key Vertebrate Sex Determination Genes and Associates with a Large Sex Chromosome Effect.

Characterizing the diversity and lability of the amphibian sex chromosomes holds key to understand what drives sex chromosome turnovers and assess the role of sex-linked genes in reproductive isolation and speciation. Here, we show that the heterogametic transition previously reported between the hybridizing toads Bufo bufo (ZW) and Bufo spinosus (XY) is nonhomologous, potentially implicates key genes of the vertebrate sex determination cascade (SOX9, DMRT1, and AMH), and is characterized by a much shorter ZW than XY segment. Integrating this information with published hybrid zone data suggest

Cross-reactivity of an antiserum to the alpha-subunit of the Na+, K+-ATPase of toad (Bufo marinus) kidney with basal and apical membranes of transporting epithelia of the rat.

An antibody to the 96 kD alpha-subunit of the Na+, K+-ATPase from Bufo marinus has been used in immunostaining rat kidney and salivary glands. Intense staining was observed on basolateral membranes of distal tubules of the kidney and striated ducts of the three major salivary glands. Less intense staining was seen on the basolateral membranes of parotid acinar cells, but no staining was seen on the acinar cells of submandibular or sublingual glands. These sites of staining have been shown, by other methods, to posses substantial Na+, K+-ATPase, indicating that the antibody recognizes antigenic

Bufokinin: a substance P-related peptide from the gut of the toad, Bufo marinus with high binding affinity but low selectivity for mammalian tachykinin receptors.

A tachykinin peptide, termed bufokinin, was isolated in pure form from an extract of the intestine of the toad, Bufo marinus, and its primary structure was established as: Lys-Pro-Arg-Pro-Asp-Gln-Phe-Tyr-Gly-Leu-Met.NH2. This sequence was confirmed by chemical synthesis and shows four amino acid substitutions (Arg1 --> Lys,Lys3 --> Arg,Gln5 --> Asp and Phe8 --> Tyr) compared with substance P. Binding parameters for synthetic bufokinin and mammalian tachykinins were compared using receptor-selective radioligands and crude membranes from rat tissues enriched in the NK-1 (submandibular gland) , N

Induction of hyperpigmentation and heat shock protein 70 response to the toxicity of methomyl insecticide during the organ development of the Arabian toad, Bufo arabicus (Heyden,1827).

Methomyl (MET) is a carbamate insecticide which is used as a substitute for organophosphorus compounds to protect crops against insects. The present study aims to evaluate the cytoprotection response of pigment cells and heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) after exposure to MET during the tadpole developmental stages of the Arabian toad, Bufo arabicus. Three developmental larval stages of the toad were selected and divided into two groups; Control and MET-exposed (MET-EX) tadpoles (10ppm). MET-EX tadpoles showed an increased number of pigment cells in the liver, kidney, anterior eye chamber, and ski

Failed recruitment of southern toads (Bufo terrestris) in a trace element-contaminated breeding habitat: direct and indirect effects that may lead to a local population sink.

We conducted a transplant study in which embryonic southern toads (Bufo terrestris) were held in a site polluted with coal ash (site AB; containing As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Se, and other elements) and a reference site (site R) through hatching and early larval development. To examine the remainder of the larval period, surviving larvae in AB were then transplanted to R and back-transplanted to AB, whereas surviving larvae from R were back-transplanted to R. Survival through early larval development was lower in AB than in R (34% versus 50%). However, site of hatching did not influence traits later in d

Histological examination of the effects of corticosterone in larvae of the western toad, Bufo boreas (Anura: Bufonidae), and the Oriental fire-bellied toad, Bombina orientalis (Anura: Discoglossidae).

The effects of corticosterone (CORT)-treatment on various tissues were examined in two species of anuran larvae, the discoglossid Bombina orientalis, and the bufonid Bufo boreas. Corticosterone was administered directly into aquarium water for 15 days. After treatment, histological analyses were conducted on skin, gut, spleen, thymus, and neural and muscle tissue. Corticosterone treatment prevented sloughing of the skin, which resulted in a build-up of stratum corneum, and inhibited the development of gland nests and the subsequent formation of dermal granular and mucous glands in both species

[A comparative analysis of the action of zootoxins on the isolated heart].

A comparative analysis of cardiotropic activity of toxins has been studied in experiments on isolated heart of the poisonous animals from different systematic groups living on the territory of the USSR: reptiles (the venom of cobra, Vipera lebetina, Ancistrodon blomhoffi), amphibian (the venom of Bufo, Bombina, salamander), arachnids (the venom of Apis, Scolopendra, scorpion). The specific cardiotropic activity of the scorpion and Bufo venom has been discovered. The mechanisms of the cardiostimulative activity of scorpion venom have been found to be due to the activation of cellular adrenoreac

Small frogs get their worms first: the role of nonodonate arthropods in the recruitment of Haematoloechus coloradensis and Haematoloechus complexus in newly metamorphosed northern leopard frogs, Rana pipiens, and woodhouse's toads, Bufo woodhousii.

Studies on the life cycles and epizootiology of North American frog lung flukes indicate that most species utilize odonates as second intermediate hosts; adult frogs become infected by ingesting odonate intermediate hosts. Newly metamorphosed frogs are rarely infected with these parasites, predominantly because they are gape-limited predators that cannot feed on large intermediate hosts such as dragonflies. We examined the role of the frog diet and potential intermediate hosts in the recruitment of the frog lung fluke, Haematoloechus coloradensis, to metamorphosed northern leopard frogs (Rana

A new cell type in the taste buds of anurans. A scanning and transmission electron microscopic study.

A hitherto undescribed cell type within the fungiform papillae of the tongue of the toad, Bufo bufo (L.) and the taste-disks of the soft palate of Bombina variegata L. was identified by means of scanning and transmission electron microscopy. This cell type is characterized by an apical protrusion carrying numerous microvilli. Bundles of filaments are present in the cytoplasm of the protrusion. Vesicles with electron lucent content and microtubules are present thoughout the cytoplasm of the cell.

Tracking the Diversity and Chromosomal Distribution of the Olfactory Receptor Gene Repertoires of Three Anurans Species.

Olfaction is a crucial capability for most vertebrates and is realized through olfactory receptors in the nasal cavity. The enormous diversity of olfactory receptors has been created by gene duplication, following a birth-and-death model of evolution. The olfactory receptor genes of the amphibians have received relatively little attention up to now, although recent studies have increased the number of species for which data are available. This study analyzed the diversity and chromosomal distribution of the OR genes of three anuran species (Engystomops pustulosus, Bufo bufo and Hymenochirus bo

Two transects reveal remarkable variation in gene flow on opposite ends of a European toad hybrid zone.

Speciation entails a reduction in gene flow between lineages. The rates at which genomic regions become isolated varies across space and time. Barrier markers are linked to putative genes involved in (processes of) reproductive isolation, and, when observed over two transects, indicate species-wide processes. In contrast, transect-specific putative barrier markers suggest local processes. We studied two widely separated transects along the 900 km hybrid zone between Bufo bufo and B. spinosus, in northern and southern France, for ~1200 RADseq markers. We used genomic and geographic cline analys

Carcass-Based Surveillance of Amphibian Herpesviruses, Ranaviruses and Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis in Schleswig-Holstein, Northern Germany.

Amphibian populations are undergoing dramatic global declines, with infectious diseases recognized as major contributors. While chytridiomycosis, caused by Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd), and disease caused by ranaviruses are well known, herpesviruses in amphibians remain comparatively neglected. We conducted a passive survey using carcasses collected between 2022 and 2025 in Schleswig-Holstein, northern Germany. Dead amphibians (n = 187) were dissected. Skin, kidney, liver, and brain samples were screened for Bd, ranaviruses, bufonid herpesvirus 1 (BfHV1), and ranid herpesvirus 3 (RaHV3)
