Lectin binding patterns in the olfactory bulb of the Japanese common toad, Bufo japonicus, were examined using 21 types of lectin. The soil ecotoxicology literature has focused primarily on a few major taxa, to the neglect of other fossorial organisms such as amphibians. Accurate characterization of helminth communities in amphibian hosts is essential for understanding host-parasite dynamics in changing environments. This study presents an integrative parasitological survey of Bufotes viridis populations in eastern Slovakia, using both morphological and molecular methods. A total of 61 road-killed individuals collected across 13 localities were examined for helminth presence. In our study, Bufo gargarizans (B. gargarizans) larvae were exposed to control, 0.5, 5, 10 and 50 mg/L of NaF from Gs 26 to 42. A hitherto undescribed cell type within the fungiform papillae of the tongue of the toad, Bufo bufo (L.) and the taste-disks of the soft palate of Bombina variegata L. was identified by means of scanning and transmission electron microscopy. This cell type is characterized by an apical protrusion carrying numerous microvilli. Bundles of filaments are present in the cytoplasm of the protrusion. Vesicles with electron lucent content and microtubules are present thoughout the cytoplasm of the cell.

A simple and inexpensive apparatus makes possible the feeding of nonliving objects to the toad. The device is used to demonstrate the perception of apparent or "induced" motion. Two methods are successful: (i) toad and food moving together at a constatnt velocity in a stationary environment; (ii) toad and food stationary with the environment moving. The phenomena are similar to those found in human beings.

Wyoming toads (Bufo baxteri) that died from January 1989 to June 1996 were submitted to the Wyoming State Veterinary Laboratory (Laramie, Wyoming, USA) for postmortem evaluation. These consisted of 108 free-ranging toads and 170 animals from six captive populations. Ninety-seven (90%) of 108 free-ranging toad carcasses were submitted during September and October. During late May 1995, 50 adult captive endangered Wyoming toads (Bufo baxteri) were brought out of hibernation. Approximately 3 to 10 days after hibernation emergence, all toads were hormonally induced to breed, and paired. Each pair was placed in their own breeding tank. Four toads developed clinical signs of disease which included lethargy and multiple (4 to 12) small (2 mm) raised hyperemic nodules with white fuzzy caps on the ventral skin.
