Classical phenylketonuria in Bulgaria: RFLP haplotypes and frequency of the major mutations.

RFLP haplotypes and common mutations in the phenylalanine hydroxylase gene have been studied in a group of 29 Bulgarian PKU families. Haplotype distribution differs from that in other European populations, with a predominance of haplotypes 2 and 6 and a total absence of haplotype 3. The amino acid substitution in codon 408 is the most frequent molecular defect. The splicing defect in intron 12 is not found in Bulgarian PKU patients. Testing for three mutations, reported to be common among haplotype 1 and 4 alleles, has shown that they occur less frequently in Bulgarian PKU patients. Screening

Impact of COVID-19 on Otorhinolaryngologists in Bulgaria: A Survey of Healthcare Professionals.

Background The COVID-19 pandemic caused significant global social and economic disruption, highlighting the challenges of emerging infectious diseases. It also pushed modern medicine and healthcare systems to the wall. The mode of transmission of the SARS-CoV-2 infection is by aerosolized upper respiratory tract secretions. The otorhinolaryngology specialty seems to be among the riskiest for contracting airborne infections. This is because of the close face-to-face contact with the patients during routine examinations and many specific procedures. This study aimed to evaluate otolaryngologists

Risk Assessment of Spread of the Influenza A Virus in Cows in South Bulgaria.

In this article, we present an assessment of the risk of the potential introduction and spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in cows in Bulgaria. In the spring of 2024, we witnessed an unprecedented spread of the virus in dairy herds in the USA. This crossing of interspecies barriers by the virus creates a real danger of pandemic manifestations in humans. The continued spread of H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4b in dairy populations and other mammalian species and efficient animal-to-animal transmission increases the risk of infection and subsequent spread of the virus in human populations. Geographic distribution of antibiotic resistance of Helicobacter pylori: A study in Bulgaria.

Prevalence of antibiotic resistant Helicobacter pylori was compared between 50 patients living outside the capital city and 50 matched pairs of capital city residents (CCRs). H. pylori isolates from 2018 to 2022 were included. Resistance rates in CCRs and those living elsewhere were 4.0 and 6.0% to amoxicillin, 48.0 and 42.0% to metronidazole, 30 and 30% to clarithromycin, and 4.0 and 4.0% to tetracycline, respectively. Levofloxacin resistance was higher (38.0%) in the capital city vs 20.0% (P = 0.047) in the country. Odd ratio for levofloxacin resistance between pair-matched groups was 2.45 (

Analysis of the Origin and Dissemination of HIV-1 Subtype C in Bulgaria.

HIV-1 subtype C is the most abundant strain of HIV-1 infections worldwide and was found in the first known patients diagnosed with HIV/AIDS in Bulgaria in 1986. However, there is limited information on the molecular-epidemiological characteristics of this strain in the epidemic of the country. In this study, we analyze the evolutionary history of the introduction and dissemination of HIV-1 subtype C in Bulgaria using global phylogenetic analysis, Bayesian coalescent-based approach, and molecular clock methods. All available samples with HIV-1 subtype C from individuals diagnosed with HIV/AIDS

The Prevalence and Genetic Characterization of Human Metapneumovirus in Bulgaria, 2016-2019.

INTRODUCTION: We investigated the prevalence of human metapneumovirus (hMPV) among patients with acute respiratory infections in Bulgaria, and performed genetic characterization of the F gene of these strains. METHODS: Nasopharyngeal swabs collected from patients of a range of ages were tested by using real-time PCR for 12 respiratory viruses. The F gene was sequenced, and phylogenetic and amino acid analyses of the F gene/protein were performed. RESULTS: A total of 1,842 patients were examined during a 3-year period; 1,229 patients (66.7%) were positive for at least one respiratory virus. h

Prevalence of human papillomavirus infection in women in Bulgaria: A 2017 update.

The distribution and prevalence of 33 high-, medium-, and low-risk HPV genotypes were surveyed in women aged between 15 and 54 years and with normal cytology in the biggest cities and regions in Bulgaria (viz., Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna, and Burgas) and in two smaller communities (viz., Pleven and Vidin). This survey was also intended to update previous data collected in 2012 and to assess the results of a national campaign to immunize all 12-year-old girls against HPV, which was also started in 2012. The GenoFlow HPV Array Test Kit was used to analyze HPV status in cervical samples collected in 2

Seroprevalence of Syphilis among Pregnant Women in the Varna Region (Bulgaria).

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease with continuously rising rates among European countries. The vertical (mother to child) transmission is an important way of dissemination, often leading to stillbirth and permanent impairment of the newborn. We present a retrospective cross-sectional analysis of 2702 pregnant women tested for syphilis seropositivity. During the study period (2009-2013) non-specific and specific treponemal antibodies were detected in 15 pregnant women (0.56% of sample size with 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.28-0.84). Our results showed a lack of correlation between sy

[Preterm birth in Bulgaria--changes in aetiology and incidence in the last decade].

There is no decrease in the incidence of preterm birth in Bulgaria and in the world, despite of all the therapeutic and prophylactic efforts. The rate of prematurity in University Maternity Hospital 'Maichin dom' in the last decade has increased significantly- from 11.6% in 2003 to 17.5% in 2013. The numbers are higher than the national average due to the essence of the Hospital being a leading clinical and scientific center. Thorough analysis demonstrates significant increase in the first grade prematurity being 5.8% of all live births in 2003 and 10.2% of all live births in 2013. In fact 58%
