Recent research finds students' perceived school fairness to be a protective factor against bullying. These findings are consistent with organizational research suggesting organizations and states characterized by more procedural justice have less rule-breaking in their membership. The rationale in extant research is based on structural arguments about the nature of the organization or state, but the research overwhelmingly measures perceived fairness as an individual characteristic. This approach creates omitted variable bias via the personality trait of agreeableness, which has a robust nega

Bullying during adolescence implies different forms of involvement that shape specific profiles, whose identification allows for understanding this phenomenon. However, it is essential to explore the mechanisms associated with the persistence or change of these profiles over time. Co-rumination may be crucial as a social-cognitive process in bullying development, reinforcing negative thought patterns among peers. The aim of this study was to examine involvement in bullying by identifying participation profiles and analyzing their longitudinal probability of stability or transition according to

OBJECTIVE: Bullying is common in childhood. Identifying developmental periods most sensitive to bullying may improve understanding of the link between bullying and psychotic disorders.
METHOD: Forty-six individuals with schizophrenia spectrum disorders (schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder; SZ), 53 with psychotic bipolar disorder (BP), and 51 healthy control (HC) participants completed the Maltreatment and Abuse Chronology of Exposures questionnaire. We tested for differences in the rates and severity of emotional and physical bullying across diagnostic groups, and also calculated odds r

Multiple recent studies have indicated that adverse psycho-traumatic experiences are particularly significant, if not the most significant, among the environmental factors that participate in the aetiology of schizophrenic spectrum disorders. The prevalence of bullying in the adolescent population has increased dramatically compared to earlier reports. This may be related to the recent development of communication technology and the use of social media, which have expanded the means by which bullying can be practiced. The present study aims to investigate the association between bullying victi

BACKGROUND: Bullying is a major social issue. Individuals who experience bullying victimization may develop stress-related health disorders, such as anxiety and temporomandibular disorders (TMDs). As school bullying can enhance or trigger stress and anxiety, individuals who experience bullying victimization are prone to develop TMD. However, it is still unclear whether this relationship is mediated by anxiety.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the role of anxiety in the relationship between bullying victimization and TMD among young adults.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study

Long-term outcomes of childhood bullying perpetration have been explored, but heterogeneity in outcomes reflecting nonclinical antisocial tendencies including indirect aggression, psychopathic personality, and interpersonal relations have not been examined from a person-centered approach. Accordingly, latent class growth analyses were used to examine trajectory groups of childhood bullying perpetration across ages 10 to 18 and multi-trajectory groups of young adulthood outcomes across ages 19 to 23 (indirect aggression, psychopathic personality, interpersonal relations). In a sample of 701 par

OBJECTIVE: Psychiatric rehospitalizations results in a significant burden to patients, families, and health care systems. Understanding psychiatric rehospitalizations offers an opportunity to identify weaknesses in current systems of care. The objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that a history of trauma or ongoing bullying increases the risk of psychiatric rehospitalization.
METHOD: Retrospective cohort study of 366 individual patients (71% female) admitted to a pediatric psychiatry unit between 1/1/2015 and 12/31/2015. The primary outcome measure was rehospitalization to the s

Bullying perpetration and victimization have been linked to a number of high-risk health behaviors, including involvement in sedentary activities and sleep deprivation. Even so, the link between diet quality and bullying is generally overlooked. The present study examines the associations between diet quality, bully perpetration, and bully victimization in a cross-national sample of adolescents. Data come from the Health Behaviors of School Children (HBSC) survey, 2005/2006 (N=142,828-143,425). Youths from 41 countries/regions in North America and Europe reported features of their social conte

The adverse impact of bullying and victimization on substance use among youth has received increasing attention. Bullying is a specific type of aggressive behavior that not only involves bullies and victims but also followers, who actively support or reinforce the bully; defenders, who intervene to defend or assist the victim; or outsiders who passively observe or ignore the bullying. Limited research to date has linked these five bullying role behaviors to substance use. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between each of the bullying role behaviors and adolescent alcoho

When describing health threats, communicators can assign agency to the threat (e.g., "Hepatitis C has infected 4 million Americans") or to humans (e.g., "Four million Americans have contracted hepatitis C"). In an online experiment, the authors explored how assignment of agency affects perceptions of susceptibility and severity of a health threat, response efficacy, self-efficacy, fear arousal, and intentions to adopt health-protective recommendations. Participants were 719 individuals recruited through Mechanical Turk ( www.mturk.com ), a crowdsource labor market run by Amazon ( www.amazon.co

A crossed-lagged regression model was tested to investigate relationships between friendship support, bullying involvement, and its consequences during adolescence. Students, 12-16 years (N = 880), were administered questionnaires twice, one year apart. Using structural equation modeling, a model was specified and higher levels of support from friends were related to lower levels of bullying and victimization one year later. Additionally, a bidirectional relationship between victimization and depression was found, and greater property crimes commission was related to higher levels of future bu

AIMS: Victimization through being bullied in childhood is traditionally associated with subsequent internalizing symptoms, but some literature suggests otherwise. In this study, we examined a history of being bullied in relationship to 21 externalized aggressive behaviours in adulthood.
METHODS: Using a cross-sectional approach and a self-report survey methodology, we examined a history of being bullied in childhood in relation to 21 aggression variables in a consecutive sample of 342 internal medicine outpatients.
RESULTS: In comparison with the not bullied, participants who reported having

The present study employs an occupation-specific approach to examine bus drivers' exposure to bullying and their trait anger, job engagement, job satisfaction and turnover intentions. A total of 1,023 bus drivers from a large public transport organization participated in the study. The findings show that bus driving can be a high risk occupation with regard to bullying, since 70% of the bus drivers had experienced one or more acts typical of bullying during the last six months. As many as 11% defined themselves as victims of bullying, 33% of whom (i.e. 3.6% of the total sample) see themselves

AIM: This paper is a report of a study conducted to test a model linking new graduate nurses' perceptions of structural empowerment to their experiences of workplace bullying and burnout in Canadian hospital work settings using Kanter's work empowerment theory.
BACKGROUND: There are numerous anecdotal reports of bullying of new graduates in healthcare settings, which is linked to serious health effects and negative organizational effects.
METHODS: We tested the model using data from the first wave of a 2009 longitudinal study of 415 newly graduated nurses (<3 years of experience) in acute ca

OBJECTIVE: This study examined whether sexual and physical abuse, bullying by peers, and ethnicity-based discrimination are associated with an increased risk for developing binge eating disorder in black women and in white women and whether any increase in risk is specific for the development of binge eating disorder.
METHOD: A community sample of 162 women with binge eating disorder and 251 healthy and 107 psychiatric comparison subjects was interviewed for exposure to the risk factors under investigation.
RESULTS: White subjects with binge eating disorder reported significantly higher rate

BACKGROUND: Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and tic disorder (TD) often co-occur. Given the well-established strong link between bullying and adverse psychiatric outcomes, understanding how TD and comorbid ADHD jointly interact to influence bullying involvement is crucial for informing clinical assessment and intervention. This study investigated psychopathology, bullying experiences, and their associations in children with TD, accounting for the influence ADHD, using data from a nationwide epidemiological survey.
METHODS: The sample included 4816 children in grades 3, 5, and

Bullying victimization is a major risk factor for adolescents' school adjustment, yet the mechanisms linking these experiences remain unclear. This study examined whether psychological resilience mediates the association between bullying victimization and school adjustment among junior high school students, and whether physical activity moderates this process. Using a cross-sectional design, data were obtained from 19,149 junior high school students in the Adolescent Health Theme Database. Regression, Bootstrap mediation, and moderated mediation analyses were conducted. Bullying victimization

Bullying and violence, both on and off campuses, significantly impact children's well-being. To address school bullying, every U.S. state gradually developed and implemented school anti-bullying laws (ABLs) and regulations between 2000 and 2015. This paper evaluates the effectiveness of ABLs using a difference-in-differences model and nationally representative samples of U.S. elementary school children. While state ABLs show limited overall effects on children's social-behavioral skills, significant improvements are observed in self-control and interpersonal skills among low-income children, a
