What the landscape can tell: An integrative stratigraphic prospection approach to localize a Black Death mass grave in Erfurt/Central Germany.

The Black Death pandemic (1346-53 AD) caused a 30-50% population decline across Europe. For the city of Erfurt in Thuringia, substantial human losses and corresponding mass graves are well-documented in historical archives. The aim of our study is to localize these mass graves in the nearby deserted village of Neuses in order to validate the written sources and to obtain skeletal remains for future anthropological and archeogenetic analyses. Here we present our integrative approach of historical research and minimally-invasive stratigraphic and geophysical prospection. Within the area of inter

Non-avalanche-related snow immersion deaths: tree well and deep snow immersion asphyxiation.

Non-avalanche-related snow immersion death (NARSID), or snow immersion asphyxiation, is a significant winter mountain hazard for skiers and snowboarders. This phenomenon occurs predominately in western North America, where large tree wells and deep snowpacks develop. Although statistics are difficult to procure, snow immersion asphyxiation has resulted in more than 70 documented deaths in the past 2 decades. The primary purpose of this review is to examine the existing literature on NARSID to help prevent such dangerous accidents through educating wilderness medicine professionals and fosterin

Genesis of Dolomite and Diagenetic-Pore Evolution Model of High-Quality Reservoirs in the Third Member of the Middle Triassic Leikoupo Formation, Northwestern Sichuan Basin.

Recent exploration has achieved significant breakthroughs in dolomite reservoirs within the third member of the Middle Triassic Leikoupo Formation (T2l3) in the northwestern Sichuan Basin. However, limited understanding persists about the sources of dolomitizing fluids, dolomite genesis, and diagenetic-porosity evolution, hindering research on high-quality reservoir formation. This study integrates petrographic, geochemical (C-O-Sr isotopes, major and trace elements, rare earth elements), and cathodoluminescence analyses to clarify the origins of diagenetic fluids and formation mechanisms of v

Network visualization for outbreak response: Mapping the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) chains of transmission in N'Zérékoré, Guinea.

BACKGROUND: During the 2014-2015 Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) outbreak in N'Zérékoré, Forested Guinea, modes of transmission remained unexamined for a number of new cases. We used network visualization to investigate EVD transmission chains (TC) in seven sub-prefectures of N'Zérékoré in order to adapt outbreak response. METHODS: Between August 2014 and February 2015, the EVD outbreak response team including the World Health Organization (WHO) and local health authorities routinely collected information among new cases regarding hospital visits, cases within a household, participation in burials,

Avalanche Preparedness and Accident Analysis Among Backcountry Skier, Sidecountry, and Snowmobile Fatalities in the United States: 2009 to 2019.

INTRODUCTION: While avalanche fatalities have remained relatively steady per year, data suggest a possible increase in sidecountry use and snowmobile fatalities. Limited information is known regarding the accident details and preparedness among different groups of backcountry users including snowmobiles, sidecountry, and backcountry skiers, and what specific factors could contribute to their fatalities. METHODS: Avalanche fatality reports covering all US states posted by the Colorado Avalanche Information Center available online for 10 seasons (2009-2010 through 2018-2019 seasons) were analyz

[Legal and practical aspects of perinatal death].

There is some debate as to whether the Dutch Burial Act applies to neonatal deaths after a gestation of less than 24 weeks. It is recommended that the Act be considered applicable in these situations, leading to a compulsory (external) post mortem examination, the issue of an official death certificate, and registration of the birth and death at the official registry office, followed by burial or cremation according to the law. The Act should be amended to this effect. It is also recommended that the Burial Act no longer apply in cases of known intra-uterine death before 24 weeks of gestation

A Late Antiquity case of a chronic osteomyelitis from the population of Cortijo Coracho, Córdoba, Spain (IV-VIII centuries AD).

The Cortijo Coracho archaeological site dates from the Late Antiquity period, from the 5th to the 8th century AD. During this period, a number of populations settled in the area (Germanic peoples until Visigothic rule, Byzantine until the arrival of the Arabs, etc.), each of them concentrating the historical characteristics in the Sub-Baetic that are currently known. The Cortijo Coracho archaeological site is currently located in the city of Lucena (Cordoba, Spain), found after the works on the A-45 motorway. The necropolis consists of 294 inhumations and the remains of a basilica, although af

Transfer efficiency of organic carbon in marine sediments.

Quantifying the organic carbon (OC) sink in marine sediments is crucial for assessing how the marine carbon cycle regulates Earth's climate. However, burial efficiency (BE) - the commonly-used metric reporting the percentage of OC deposited on the seafloor that becomes buried (beyond an arbitrary and often unspecified reference depth) - is loosely defined, misleading, and inconsistent. Here, we use a global diagenetic model to highlight orders-of-magnitude differences in sediment ages at fixed sub-seafloor depths (and vice-versa), and vastly different BE's depending on sediment depth or age ho

Frailty and famine: Patterns of mortality and physiological stress among victims of famine in medieval London.

OBJECTIVES: Famine can be defined as a shortage of foodstuffs that instigates widespread excess mortality due to starvation, infectious disease, and social disruption. Like other causes of catastrophic mortality, famine has the potential to be selective. This study examines how famines in medieval London were selective with respect to previous stress, age, and sex. METHODS: This study compares famine burials to nonfamine (attritional) burials from the St Mary Spital cemetery, London (c. 1120-1540 AD). We evaluate the associations between age, sex, and skeletal stress indicators [cribra orbita

Quarantine as filter: a conceptual framework from early modern Venice.

Lazzaretto Vecchio, founded in 1423 in the Venetian lagoon, is recognized as the earliest permanent quarantine hospital. For nearly three centuries it operated at a major maritime frontier. Historical records describe extensive epidemic mortality and mandate burial on quarantine islands, leading to the long-standing model of a Venetian plague house dominated by resident burials (H1). Yet the island's physical capacity is insufficient to accommodate all documented epidemic deaths, exposing a persistent discrepancy between archaeological evidence and early modern narratives of epidemic containme

Rescue missions for totally buried avalanche victims: conclusions from 12 years of experience.

The planning and execution of avalanche rescue missions to search for totally buried avalanche victims are mostly based on personal experience and preference, as evidence-based information from literature is almost completely missing. Hence, the aim of this study was to identify major factors determining the survival probability of totally buried victims during avalanche rescue missions carried out by organized rescue teams (Austrian Mountain Rescue Service, Tyrol). During the 12-year period studied, 109 totally buried persons (56 off-piste, 53 backcountry), were rescued or recovered; 18.3% su

A Neolithic case of fibrous dysplasia from Çatalhöyük (Turkey).

The vast majority of primary burials at Neolithic Çatalhöyük (Central Anatolia, Turkey, 7100-6000cal BC) are recovered from beneath house floors, with burials in external spaces extremely rare. Excavations at Çatalhöyük in 1998 brought to light a young adult male buried in a midden (a burial location observed so far for only 4 out of 440 individuals), showing a suite of pathological features affecting the entire skeleton. The observed pathological changes include perimortem and antemortem fractures, proliferative and resorptive areas, thinning of the bone cortex, and localized areas of disorga

[The bronze head of Seuthes III. A maxillofacial surgery case from antiquity].

The authors had the opportunity to visit the tumulus of Golijama Kosmatka in todays central Bulgaria and the there found burial artefacts of Seuthes III., a Thracian King who lived in the 4th-3rd century BC. The beautiful bronze head of the king found in front of the burial site shows the typical sequelae of a dislocated lateral mid face fracture in all details. These findings do fit and also confirm the troublesome times this local king went through after the death of Alexander the Great.

Facial skeleton asymmetry and its relationship to mastication in the Early Medieval period (Great Moravian Empire, Mikulčice, 9th-10th century).

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to analyse the relationship of mastication and directional asymmetry (DA) of upper facial skeleton in Early Medieval sample from the Mikulčice settlement (Czech Republic). DESIGN: The settlement is divided into two burial areas of presumably different socioeconomic status: the castle and the sub-castle. The material consisted of 193 individuals (125 castle, 68 sub-castle). The relationship of facial skeleton DA and mastication was analysed by examining tooth wear and mandibular shape by means of 3D geometric morphometrics. Tooth wear of premolars and mola

The law relating to dealing with dead bodies.

Since March 1999 there have been three inquiries concerned either in whole or in part with the removal of human tissue from bodies during post-mortem examinations and its retention thereafter. Two of these at least have had to consider the law relating to the matter, and a commissioned paper and a submission about it to one, the Bristol Royal Infirmary Inquiry, have been mounted on the Inquiry's Web site. The main part of this article consists of the slightly revised text of a submission to the Inquiry by way of comment on these. Among the major points made in this submission are that (a) insu

Dental health status of the medieval silver-mining community from Kutná Hora (Czech Republic, 13th-16th c.): Impact of socioeconomic changes and mortality crises.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to evaluate the pathological conditions in teeth from skeletal remains found in the medieval burial ground at Kutná Hora (13th-16th centuries, Czech Republic). We focused on the effect on dental health of socioeconomic changes associated with the boom in silver mining at the site. DESIGN: In this study, dental caries and antemortem tooth loss were recorded for 469 sexed adults (10,558 permanent teeth). Pathologies were analysed and presented by teeth and alveoli, and the differences between their frequencies were tested in sex-, age-, and burial context-sep

Technological advances in avalanche survival.

Over the last decade, a proliferation of interest has emerged in the area of avalanche survival, yielding both an improved understanding of the pathophysiology of death after avalanche burial and technological advances in the development of survival equipment. The dismal survival statistics born out of the modern era of winter recreation unmistakably reveal that elapsed time and depth of burial are the most critical variables of survival and the focus of newer survival devices on the market. Although blunt trauma may kill up to one third of avalanche victims, early asphyxiation is the predomin

The long-term capability of soil pore air sampling to detect graves.

We examined the concentrations of methane (CH4), carbon dioxide (CO2) and nitrous oxide (N2O) in the pore air of a well-drained soil at which pig carcasses were buried over 12-13 years at depths between 50 and 100 cm. Sites included disturbed pits without carcasses, an undisturbed site, a mass grave (20 pigs) and single carcass graves buried at two depths with and without burial in a plastic bag. Twelve years after burial, the concentrations of CH4 were mostly below atmospheric values (∼ 2.0 ppm), showing that this gas was of little value in detecting graves under these conditions. Concentrati

Big dung beetles dig deeper: trait-based consequences for faecal parasite transmission.

Observational evidence suggests that burial of faeces by dung beetles negatively influences the transmission of directly transmitted gastrointestinal helminths. However, the mechanistic basis for these interactions is poorly characterised, limiting our ability to understand relationships between beetle community composition and helminth transmission. We demonstrate that beetle body size and sex significantly impact tunnel depth, a key variable affecting parasite survival. Additionally, high parasite loads reduce the depth of beetle faeces burial, suggesting that the local prevalence of parasit
