BACKGROUND: Manikins are widely used in airway management training; however, simulation of realism and interpatient variability remains a challenge. We investigated whether cadavers embalmed with the novel Fix for Life (F4L) embalmment method are a suitable and realistic model for teaching 3 basic airway skills: facemask ventilation, tracheal intubation, and laryngeal mask insertion compared to a manikin (SimMan 3G) and formalin-fixed cadavers.
METHODS: Thirty anesthesiologists and experienced residents ("operators") were instructed to perform the 3 airway techniques in 10 F4L, 10 formalin-fi

Safety is a major issue in the embalming procedures of human cadavers. Reduced application of formaldehyde is often recommended. The aim of this study was to investigate the potency of ultraviolet light (UV-C irradiation) on the bacterial load on the surface of a conserved human cadaver. To test UV-C irradiation, the cadaver was laid out in the dissection hall and, after preparation of the muscles, was covered with linen sheets moistened with water. Swabs of the surface and microbiological analysis revealed sporadic bacterial colonies. The surface area was then spiked with bacteria and irradia

BACKGROUND: Conventional embalming relies on arterial cannulation, which may be difficult when vessels are diseased, inaccessible, or damaged. Intraosseous (IO) vascular access, widely used in emergency medicine, provides a rapid and reliable route into the medullary venous system. This technical note describes a simple IO embalming protocol and assesses its feasibility and performance in human cadavers.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: IO access was established in cadavers using bone-marrow needles inserted into the proximal tibia, distal femur, sternum and iliac crest. Standard formaldehyde-based emb

The primary objective of this cadaver study was to assess the feasibility of a novel custom helical distraction system and a patient-specific antral maxillary distractor. The study involved two fresh cadaver heads and followed a systematic procedure. First, virtual planning was conducted for an asymmetric maxillomandibular advancement. Custom patient-specific hardware was then fabricated to enable sequential mandibular advancement and gradual maxillary distraction. The mandibular lengthening procedures were found to be highly accurate, with only minor deviations from the planned results. In te

Background The cuboid bone (CB) of the foot has been suggested as a potential source of autologous reconstruction of the distal radius (DR). This study sought to examine the feasibility of harvesting the CB as a vascularized bone transfer for DR reconstruction. Purposes We evaluated the feasibility of a vascularized bone transfer of the CB by performing the flap dissection, analyzing its pedicle and demonstrating its perfusion using indocyanine green (ICG) fluorescence angiography. Materials and Methods Ten feet from five fresh-frozen cadaver specimens were dissected. The lateral tarsal art

INTRODUCTION: The Flexor Hallucis Longus (FHL) is a muscle that can be subject to multiple impingements caused by exaggerated plantar flexion in athletes. The most common impingement is due to inflammation of the tendon at the retrotalar pulley. The constraints exerted on the FHL are responsible for a pathology called functional Hallux Limitus. Surgical treatment consists of tenolysis of the FHL arthroscopically or via open surgery, by opening the pulley. The objective of this study was to evaluate the risk of lesions of the neurovascular pedicle and the posterior tibial tendon after tenolysis

Zygomaticomaxillary complex fractures are common in midface trauma, with treatment often involving repair using titanium mini plates. However, the need for plate fixation along the zygomaticomaxillary suture on the infraorbital rim remains controversial. This study utilized a previously reported bite force simulator to investigate craniofacial strain patterns following zygomaticomaxillary complex fracture repairs with and without plating of the infraorbital rim. Osteotomies were made to 6 fresh-frozen cadaveric heads to simulate 2 types of zygomatic complex fractures: a dipod fracture with ost

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to measure the angle and depth at which the vocal folds are accessed via transcutaneous injection through two different approaches through the cricothyroid membrane.
METHODS: Twenty-five cadavers preserved with formalin were studied. The larynges were bisected through the thyroid notch, and the skin and soft tissue were removed. A 27-gauge needle was inserted through the cricothyroid membrane, once from just inferior to the thyroid cartilage and once from just superior to the cricoid cartilage, and advanced to the midpoint of the musculomembranous voca

More than 100 years after the first description by Kanavel of a transoral-transpharyngeal approach to remove a bullet impacted between the atlas and the clivus [1], the transoral approach (TOA) still represents the 'gold standard' for surgical treatment of a variety of conditions resulting in anterior craniocervical compression and myelopathy [2, 3]. Nevertheless, some concerns-such as the need for a temporary tracheostomy and a postoperative nasogastric tube, and the increased risk of infection resulting from possible bacterial contamination and nasopharyngeal incompetence [4-6]-led to the in

PURPOSE: To determine if scaphoid fractures with bridging bone of 50% of their width treated with a centrally placed screw will restore biomechanical integrity equivalent to that of the intact scaphoid.
METHODS: Twenty-four fresh cadaver scaphoids were used. Six were left intact to serve as the control group. Six were osteotomized 50% of their width and made up the osteotomy without screw group. Six were included in the 50% osteotomy plus compression screw group. The remaining 6 were to be treated with an osteotomy of 25% or 75% with a screw, based upon the results of the 50% osteotomy with s

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to investigate the change in airway dimensions after medialization thyroplasty (MT) using a cadaveric model. Helical computerized tomography (CT) was performed before and after placement of a silastic block in human larynges to investigate the effect on airway anatomy at the level of the glottis. Tissue density (TD) of the medialized vocal fold (VF) was documented to understand the effect on tissue displacement.
STUDY DESIGN: This is a cadaveric study.
METHODS: Thirteen human cadaveric larynges underwent fine-cut CT scan before and after MT was perfo

BACKGROUND: Carpal tunnel syndrome is a common condition frequently requiring surgical intervention. We describe a new minimally invasive surgical technique for carpal tunnel release utilizing ultrasound (US) visualization.
METHODS: The technique was performed on 20 fresh frozen cadaver specimens. A surgical metallic probe with a "U"-shaped trough and upward curved distal tip was precisely positioned in the carpal tunnel with US guidance followed by division of the flexor retinaculum (FR) with a "V"-shaped scalpel.
RESULTS: Complete division of the FR was confirmed by US. Dissection performe

INTRODUCTION: This study examined the routes and variations of the left coronary artery (LCA), the right coronary artery (RCA), and their branches, as well as the frequency of a median artery in cadaver hearts.
METHODS: The hearts of 50 adult Turkish cadavers from various centres were dissected.
RESULTS: The LCAs branched out of the aortic sinus and had an average diameter of 4.44 +/- 1.79 mm. They gave rise to two branches (bifurcation) in 46 percent, three branches (trifurcation) in 44 percent and four branches (quadrifurcation) in ten percent of the hearts. The median artery was identifie

Endoscopy of the spinal canal, for interventional studies, diagnosis and therapy, is a scientific topic that has attracted the interest of neurosurgeons, anesthesiologists and orthopedic surgeons for the past twenty years. Endoscopy of the thecal sac was assumed to be less important than endoscopy of the ventricular system by neurosurgeons. Nevertheless, during the last years it has attained increasing scientific interest, firstly because of the introduction of small diameter flexible endoscopes and secondly due to the growing interest for minimal invasive diagnostic and therapeutic procedures

Cubital tunnel syndrome is the second most common compressive neuropathy in the upper extremity. Treatment of cubital tunnel syndrome consists of releasing the compression on the ulnar nerve with conservative or surgical methods. Nerve decompression is an alternative simple and less invasive procedure. We have proposed a "two limited incisions" technique in order to release the cubital tunnel with two minimal incisions on a cadaveric elbow model. Thirty elbows of 15 formalin-fixed cadavers were studied. The study was performed in two steps. The first step involved a two limited incisions techn

OBJECTIVE: To review our experience with cadaveric kidney transplantation with ex situ reconstruction of damaged renal artery.
METHODS: To obtain a minimum follow-up of 5 years, 20 cases treated from January 1989 to December 1994 were retrospectively reviewed. The control group comprised 73 patients that had received an "ideal" graft during the same period. Both groups were similar for all the variables that could influence graft outcome.
RESULTS: Both groups showed similar results for incidence of NTA, rejection episodes, creatinine values, surgical complications or reoperations. However, a

Pelvic osteotomies for acetabular dysplasia include an osteotomy of the ischium. The potential anatomical hazards of three different osteotomies of the ischium were assessed by performing a triple osteotomy in a series of 8 fresh cadaver pelvises. An oblique osteotomy above the sacrospinous ligament using a posterior approach requires that the inferior gluteal and pudendal neurovascular bundles be mobilised and retracted. A transverse osteotomy below the sacrospinous ligament using a posterior approach can be performed in a relatively safe area between the pudendal and sciatic nerves. A transv

The mechanical rigidity obtained by external fixation in a comminuted phalangeal fracture model was assessed and the results compared with two other types of internal fixation commonly used (lateral plate and crossed Kirschner wires) in a biomechanical cadaver study. Each fixation technique was tested in apex palmar bending, compression and torsion. The results showed that lateral plating provided the best rigidity in apex palmar bending and compression and that external fixation and Kirschner wires showed the same mechanical properties. For the torque test, external fixation provided the best
