Cadmium is widely used in industry, causing exposure of workers and environmental pollution because of its persistence in the biosystems. Its very long half-life in the human organism causes its accumulation over the lifetime in liver and kidneys. Cadmium ions have a high affinity for tissue thiols, induce the synthesis of a carrier cysteine-rich polypeptide called metallothionein, and impair proteoglycan metabolism. Significant renal effects include tubular nephropathy manifested by proteinuria, amino aciduria, glucosuria, phosphaturia, and calcium wastage. Chronic sequels include decrease in

In the present work, protective effect of tetrahydrocurcumin (THC) against oxidative damages in cadmium (Cd)-induced toxicity in rats was evaluated. Cd is an important environmental and industrial toxicant that affects almost all the organs, especially liver. Liver is the major organ responsible for the metabolism and the primary target for many toxic chemicals and drugs. Effect of THC, the curcumin-derived polyphenolic compound on Cd-induced oxidative stress and hepatic damage was evaluated using male albino Wistar rats. In Cd-administered rats (5 mg/kg body weight (b.w.), orally for 4 weeks)

Based on the systematization of the experimental and epidemiological data on the toxicity of the compounds of mercury and cadmium and on the concept of a reasonable risk, the author has developed qualitative indices (criteria) required to analyze the safety of work associated with metallic mercury and cadmium at the dangerous industrial objects while declaring their safety. The fulfillment of these criteria ensures the high level of safety of mercury- and cadmium-associated work; it is in accord with the current trends in approaches to evaluating the safety of devices using toxically dangerous

Inert metal-selenide colloids are found in animals. They are believed to afford cross-protection against the toxicities of both metals and selenocompounds. Here, the toxicities of metal salt and sodium selenide mixtures were systematically studied using the death rate of Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells as an indicator. In parallel, the abilities of these mixtures to produce colloids were assessed. Studied metal cations could be classified in three groups: (i) metal ions that protect cells against selenium toxicity and form insoluble colloids with selenide (Ag⁺, Cd²⁺, Cu²⁺, Hg²⁺, Pb²⁺ and Zn²⁺),

Air pollutants can exhibit both acute and chronic effects. Acute effects mainly occur during smog situations in industrial areas when atmospheric concentrations of hazardous substances are extremely high. This leads to an increase of morbidity and mortality especially in old and ill people. Chronic effects are the consequence of a longlasting exposition to low doses of noxious substances. Epidemiological studies have shown that frequency of respiratory diseases is higher in air polluted areas; this effect is particularly evident in smokers. Biological monitoring is used to determine the indivi

A variety of industrial agents to which large segments of the population are exposed have been linked to the development of cardiovascular disease. These toxic agents, which include carbon monoxide, carbon disulphide, lead, and cadmium, are produced by a wide variety of industrial processes and so are ubiquitous in the modern industrial environment. Although the mechanisms by which such toxins may contribute to cardiovascular disease are not well defined, there are at least four possible theories that have received clinical and experimental support. The postulated mechanisms by which such toxi

During embryogenesis, maternal administration of cadmium (Cd) produces teratogenic effects, including hydrocephalus (HC), whereas later in gestation (during the fetal period), such effects have not been reported. Since there is little placental transfer of Cd late in gestation, such differences in response could be due to a lower Cd concentration in the fetus compared with the embryo after maternal Cd exposure, or could be due to a decreased sensitivity of the fetal central nervous system (CNS) to Cd. To test the susceptibility of the late gestational CNS to Cd, day 19 (sperm plug = day 0) rat

Metals have been used for many centuries, but their nutritional and toxic effects have been investigated since the last century. The common toxic heavy metals (THM) include mercury, lead, chromium cadmium, and arsenic. As human exposure to THM increasingly causes systemic and organ complications, it seems required to review the recent advances of treatment of the toxic metals. Despite the current knowledge of the hazards of heavy metals, there is still high incidents of their poisonings particularly in developing countries. In this review, after an introduction, we briefly describe the routes

Since kidney diseases are a major global concern, their impact on public health makes them an important area of study. The kidneys, as the primary organs responsible for excreting waste, are particularly vulnerable to heavy metal poisoning. Cadmium (Cd), a naturally occurring heavy metal found in contaminated food and water, poses a serious risk to renal health. Due to their remarkable biological properties, methylindoline derivatives are being investigated for a variety of medicinal applications. The primary objective of this study is to screen and assess the anti-inflammatory and anti-nephri

The present investigation was carried out to assess the trace mineral profile of milk from lactating cows reared around different industrial units and to examine the effect of blood and milk concentration of lead and cadmium on copper, cobalt, zinc and iron levels in milk. Respective blood and milk samples were collected from a total of 201 apparently healthy lactating cows above 3 years of age including 52 cows reared in areas supposed to be free from pollution. The highest milk lead (0.85+/-0.11 microg/ml) and cadmium (0.23+/-0.02 microg/ml) levels were recorded in lactating cows reared arou

The article presents the results of research into the physical, chemical and toxicological properties of metallo-organic compound dimethylcadmium. Through functional, morphologic and biochemical technique, in acute, pre-acute and chronic experiments on animals, established were the major toxicometric parametres, the substance's action on the blood system, respiration, functioning of the kidney, the liver, the CNS and the gonads. The data showed that, if inhaled, dimethylcadmium was more toxic than the other cadmium non-organic compounds, being a polythropic poisonous substance with particular

Neuronal health depends on quality control functions of autophagy, but mechanisms regulating neuronal autophagy are poorly understood. Previously, we showed that in Drosophila starvation-independent quality control autophagy is regulated by acinus (acn) and the Cdk5-dependent phosphorylation of its serine437 (Nandi et al., 2017). Here, we identify the phosphatase that counterbalances this activity and provides for the dynamic nature of acinus-serine437 (acn-S437) phosphorylation. A genetic screen identified six phosphatases that genetically interacted with an acn gain-of-function model. Among

In this study, chrysin as a natural flavonoid was encapsulated in nanoliposomal structures, and the synthesized nanoliposome-loaded chrysin (NLC) was further characterized for its physical properties and cytoprotective effects in mice that received cadmium-containing water. The results showed that the synthesized NLC is possessed spherical structure with the size of 185.1 nm and negative surface charge of - 26 mV with a poly dispersity index of 0.26. The mice received cadmium (2 mg/kg body weight/day) through drinking water showed weight loss and decease in the feed intake significantly (p ≤ 0

Chronic heavy metal exposure and the health hazards that ensue are important public-health problems. We highlight the occurrence of hypophosphataemic osteomalacia due to chronic cadmium exposure in the silver industry in India. Three silversmiths presented similarly with clinical, biochemical and radiological evidence of hypophosphataemic osteomalacia. Considering their occupation, their blood samples were screened for heavy metals and were found to have toxic levels of cadmium. They were initiated on neutral phosphate and calcitriol. On follow-up, they reported significant reduction in severi

The aim of the present study was to establish to what degree a one-year exposure of rat females to 5, 50 and 100 mg Cd/l affects the weight of the submandibular glands and their cadmium levels. We observed a decrease in the weight of the submandibular glands in the rat females from Groups I, II and III, compared to the control rats. We also found an increase in cadmium levels in the submandibular glands in Groups I, II and III, in comparison to the control. The highest cadmium concentration was noted in the submandibular glands in Group III, which was accompanied by the greatest weight reducti

Cadmium is a non-essential element that has high rates of soil to plant transference compared with other non-essential elements, and certain plant species accumulate large amounts of cadmium from low cadmium content soils. In this paper, levels of cadmium found in major food groups are highlighted together with cadmium levels found in liver and kidney samples from non-occupationally exposed populations. Data on human kidney cadmium levels identified recently, including the study in our own laboratory, are compared with older studies. Human-tissue cadmium contents showed large variations among

Occupational and environmental exposure to cadmium leads to a progressive and almost irreversible accumulation of the metal in the body. The epidemiological and experimental studies carried out by the authors allow them to draw the following conclusions: 1) the kidney is usually the critical organ i.e. the organ exhibiting the first signs of adverse effects following long term moderate exposure to cadmium by inhalation or by ingestion. 2) Cadmium interferes not only with the tubular reabsorption process(es) for low molecular weight proteins (e.g. beta 2 . microglobulin, retinol binding protein
