Calciphylaxis is a severe complication of chronic renal failure, confined almost exclusively to patients on dialysis therapy. Histological characteristics of calciphylaxis include small-vessel calcifications of skin, subcutaneous tissue, and visceral organs. These vascular changes promote tissue ischemia that often results in tissue necrosis. In this study, we investigated the extent of skin ischemia in patients with calciphylaxis by means of transcutaneous oxygen tension (TCPO(2)) measurement, a noninvasive test that accurately assesses skin oxygenation. TCPO(2) levels were measured in 21 pat

BACKGROUND: Calciphylaxis is a rare, painful, life-threatening problem of cutaneous necrosis and refractory healing in patients with uremia and secondary hyperparathyroidism. The pathogenesis involves abnormalities in calcium and phosphorus metabolism and acute deposition of calcium in tissues.
METHOD: The clinical course of 16 patients who were diagnosed with calciphylaxis at our institution from 1994 through 1998 was reviewed.
RESULTS: Fourteen female patients and 2 male patients had chronic renal disease, secondary hyperparathyroidism, and characteristic skin necrosis (mean age, 56 years;

Calciphylaxis is a rare phenomenon of cutaneous necrosis that typically occurs in association with renal failure and has a poor prognosis. We report 5 new cases of calciphylaxis that illustrate the important clinical and histopathologic features of the disease. All patients had end-stage renal failure at the time that purpuric plaques and nodules were noted; these subsequently progressed to necrotic ulcers with eschars. All skin biopsy specimens showed varying degrees of calcification of the medial layer of blood vessel walls in the dermis and subcutaneous fat. Neither the product of serum cal

The purpose of this investigation was to describe the clinical presentation of nine patients with calciphylaxis involving the proximal lower extremities or trunk and to compare the clinical characteristics of these patients with those of 347 hemodialysis patients from the same geographic area. Patients were identified primarily through a computer search of pathology records, identifying patients with the term "calciphylaxis" in the biopsy report. All patients had pathologic specimens consistent with calciphylaxis. All the calciphylaxis patients were white and were markedly obese. While two pat

BACKGROUND: Calciphylaxis is characterized by painful, violaceous, mottled skin lesions (livedo reticularis) that may progress to tissue necrosis, nonhealing ulcers, gangrene, and potentially amputation, sepsis, or death. The prevalence and characteristics of patients who have calciphylaxis need further identification to predict which patients on dialysis may benefit from close monitoring or early surgical intervention.
METHODS: All 242 patients undergoing hemodialysis in an outpatient unit were reviewed retrospectively during a 15-month cross-sectional study of the prevalence and characteris

Calciphylaxis is a rare condition of widespread calcification of tissues and blood vessels with accompanying vascular thrombosis and ischemic necrosis. Most cases develop in association with hyperparathyroidism in patients with chronic renal failure. Pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE) is a hereditary condition of abnormal elastic tissue structure that leads to widespread abnormalities of the skin, retina, and visceral organs. Histologic changes of PXE have been observed as coincidental findings in several conditions such as following trauma to the skin manifest as isolated plaques often in scars.

Calciphylaxis is a rare, severe complication of secondary hyperparathyroidism. Patients present with painful, violaceous, mottled skin lesions of the upper and lower extremities, which become necrotic and produce nonhealing ulcers. Gangrene of fingers and toes frequently requires amputation, produces nonhealing wounds, and can lead to sepsis and death. We reviewed the clinical course of five patients with calciphylaxis treated in our institution. The three men and two women (aged 47 to 72 years) had secondary hyperparathyroidism from chronic renal failure. All patients had severe pruritus, pai

Calciphylaxis, a rare and life-threatening condition, involves the calcification and occlusion of microvasculature, leading to tissue ischemia and necrosis. The pathophysiology of calciphylaxis remains complex, but it is often associated with derangements in calcium and phosphate metabolism, ultimately resulting in the deposition of calcium within small blood vessels. This process leads to compromised blood flow, tissue hypoxia, and subsequent skin necrosis and ulceration, often with catastrophic consequences. While calciphylaxis typically occurs in individuals with end-stage renal disease (ur

Calciphylaxis is a rare and severe condition, characterized by calcification and thrombosis of small vessels, mainly affecting the skin. It is most often described in patients with end-stage renal disease on dialysis. Rarer cases of non-uremic calciphylaxis are reported. The prognosis is grim and the treatment is not well codified. Sodium thiosulfate has been used for more than a decade in the treatment of uremic calciphylaxis and has been shown to be effective. Its use in non-uremic cases has been reported in a few rare observations. Rheopheresis is a technique very recently used as an adjuva

Calciphylaxis, a disorder of dermal arteriolar calcification with a distinct predilection for patients with advanced kidney disease, remains an enigmatic condition that challenges clinicians. Observations regarding positive associations between levels of circulating parathyroid hormone (PTH) and the risk of calciphylaxis, combined with experimental data suggesting a pathogenic role of secondary hyperparathyroidism in vascular calcification, have led to the assumption that reducing PTH levels will improve the outcomes in patients with calciphylaxis. This editorial communicates the contemporary

Calciphylaxis is a rare, but life-threatening complication of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) that has been reported mostly in adult patients. The exact etiology is unknown, but the disease is commonly associated with a high calcium-phosphorus product and elevated levels of parathyroid hormone (PTH). We herein review the published reports on calciphylaxis in ESRD patients less than 18 years old and report the case of a patient with severe calciphylaxis who presented with lower extremity pain, muscle tenderness and difficulty in walking. The serum PTH was low, and the calcium-phosphorus product

A 43-year-old African American with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) associated with membranous nephropathy and a previously failed renal transplant had received cinacalcet to treat his secondary hyperparathyroidism. Serum calcium and phosphorus levels remained within normal limits, and serum parathyroid levels had dropped significantly following treatment initiation. However, within 7 months, the patient experienced extensive necrotic bilateral medial thigh ulcers. These were biopsied and found to be a result of calciphylaxis. The patient ultimately required an urgent subtotal parathyroidectomy

BACKGROUND: Calciphylaxis is a rare disorder characterized by skin necrosis caused by calcium deposition within vessels, thrombosis, and subsequent tissue ischemia. Penile involvement may rarely occur.
OBJECTIVE: To identify risk factors, diagnosis, management, and mortality of patients with penile calciphylaxis.
METHODS: A retrospective medical record review was conducted of 16 patients with penile calciphylaxis treated at 2 large urban tertiary care centers between January 2001 and December 2019. A control group of 44 male patients with nonpenile calciphylaxis at the same institution was i

Calciphylaxis is a rare, but life-threatening, disease, mostly seen in patients with renal failure, especially those undergoing dialysis. It is characterized by violaceous tender areas of cutaneous plaques, necrosis, and eschar formation, mostly involving toes and fingers, but rarely the penis. Peripheral pulses are mostly preserved. The parathyroid hormone (PTH) level is elevated, along with raised calcium phosphorus product. There is radiological evidence of blood vessel and soft tissue calcification. Predisposing factors are obesity and diabetes. It is rarely encountered by a urologist and

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Calciphylaxis, or calcific uremic arteriolopathy, is a well-described entity in end-stage kidney disease and renal transplant patients; however, little systematic information is available on calciphylaxis from nonuremic causes. This systematic review was designed to characterize etiologies, clinical features, laboratory abnormalities, and prognosis of nonuremic calciphylaxis.
DESIGN, SETTING, PARTICIPANTS, & MEASUREMENTS: A systematic review of literature for case reports and case series of nonuremic calciphylaxis was performed. Cases included met the operational de

A 33-year-old man, who was maintained on hemodialysis for more than 9 years, was diagnosed to have secondary hyperparathyroidism with a nodule in a parathyroid gland revealed with ultrasound and CT scan. He underwent parathyroidectomy and presented with bilateral lower limb painful ulcers two months later. Skin biopsy from these ulcers was consistent with calciphylaxis.

BACKGROUND: Calciphylaxis is a serious condition characterized by ischemic ulceration of the skin and necrosis secondary to dystrophic calcification of the subcutaneous tissue and small arteries. It affects primarily patients with end-stage renal disease with prevalence up to 4%. However, penile calciphylaxis has been reported in only 37 cases in the international literature. We report one case, to review the literature and to provide the basis for a rational treatment of calciphylaxis of the penis that reduces the associated mortality.
CASE REPORT: We report the case of an 82-year-old male w
