Stray cats (Felis vaga) are key hosts for feline and zoonotic pathogens. From June to August 2024, we conducted a cross-sectional study across six districts in Shenzhen, China, involving 126 cats sampled from three types of sites. Multiple specimens were tested via quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) for feline coronavirus type I (FCoV-I), feline calicivirus (FCV), feline herpesvirus type I (FHV-I), feline panleukopenia virus (FPV), and rabies virus (RABV); serum was analyzed for RABV-neutralizing antibodies by the fluorescent antibody virus neutralization (FAVN) assay. The overall pathogen posi

Feline herpesvirus type 1 (FHV-1) and feline calicivirus (FCV) are considered as main causes of feline upper respiratory tract disease and the most common clinical manifestations include rhinotracheitis, conjunctivitis, and nasal/facial ulcerations. While the primary infection is relatively mild, secondary infections pose a threat to young or immunocompromised cats and may result in a fatal outcome. In this study, we made an effort to evaluate antiviral potency of poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonates) (PSSNa) as potent FHV-1 and FCV inhibitors for topical use. Mechanistic studies showed that PSSNa

Zoonoses are frequently reported, and outbreaks of the highly pathogenic influenza virus, severe acute respiratory syndrome, and Middle East respiratory syndrome have occurred recently, in Africa, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia. Sterilization using a chemical reactor with plasma assisted catalytic technology (PACT) was investigated. Tests were carried out on the feline calicivirus (FCV) vaccine strain F9, which is a surrogate of airborne pathogen human norovirus. Results showed that the PACT device could inactivate FCV, which passed through the plasma chamber. Sterilization rate may be mo

Feline upper respiratory tract infections (URI) are of concern, especially in animal shelters. This scoping review identifies epidemiological literature on URI as caused by feline herpesvirus (FHV), feline calicivirus (FCV), Chlamydia felis, Mycoplasma felis and Bordetella bronchiseptica. Four databases were searched, studies were screened, and data were extracted on a standardised template. We described patterns in spatial locations of the studies, the range of pathogens and diagnostic tests, cohort characteristics and the findings of risk factor analyses. A total of 90 articles were selected

Feline herpesvirus type-1 (FHV-1), a double-stranded DNA virus, which is a highly infectious upper respiratory tract infection of felids, particularly in kittens. Droplet digital PCR (ddPCR) provides an absolute quantification method with high sensitivity and accuracy. This study aimed to develop a highly sensitive and accurate ddPCR assay for the detection of FHV-1. We designed primers and a probe targeting the FHV-1 glycoprotein D (gD) gene and evaluated the assay's limit of detection (LOD), sensitivity, repeatability, and specificity in comparison to quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR). Wild carnivores share a high percentage of parasites and viruses with closely related domestic carnivores. Because of increased overlap and potential contact with domestic species, we conducted a retrospective serosurvey for 11 common carnivore pathogens in 40 Geoffroy's cats (Leopardus geoffroyi) sampled between 2000 and 2008 within or near two protected areas in central Argentina (Lihué Calel National Park, La Pampa, and Campos del Tuyú National Park, Buenos Aires), as well as five domestic cats and 11 domestic dogs from catde ranches adjacent to Lihué Calel Park. Geoffroy's cats had detecta

Chlamydia felis is a primary cause of feline conjunctivitis and upper respiratory tract disease. Detection of C. felis largely relies on molecular tests; however, these tests cannot assess prior exposure or herd immunity. In China, no standardized commercial serologic assay for C. felis is available. We developed an indirect ELISA based on the major outer membrane protein (MOMP) of a locally isolated C. felis strain (GXNN36). A truncated ompA gene (encoding MOMP, amino acids 22-392, which retains the major antigenic domains, including the 4 variable domains VD1-4) was expressed in Escherichia

Feline respiratory disease complex (FRDC) is caused by a wide range of viral and bacterial pathogens. Both Influenza A virus (IAV) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) also induce respiratory diseases in cats. Two one-step multiplex qPCR/RT-qPCR assays were developed and validated: FRA_1 (Feline respiratory assay 1) for the detection of four viral targets and FRA_2 for the detection of three bacteria associated with FRDC. Both multiplex assays demonstrated high specificity, efficiency (93.51%-107.8%), linearity (> 0.998), analytical sensitivity (≤ 15 genome copies/μ

Feline parvovirus (FPV) causes severe gastroenteritis and leukopenia in cats, with high morbidity and mortality, necessitating a rapid and effective antigen diagnostic test with high sensitivity and specificity. In this study, a diagnostic platform based on a combination of Recombinase-Aided Amplification (RAA) and CRISPR/Cas12a was established for detecting FPV. Cas12a recombinant protein was purified using Nickel-Nitriloacetic Acid resin after heterologous expression in Escherichia coli. The results of RAA-CRISPR/Cas12a can be detected with a fluorescence reader or lateral flow strips (LFS)

UNLABELLED: Feline infectious peritonitis and virulent, systemic calicivirus infection are caused by certain types of feline coronaviruses (FCoVs) and feline caliciviruses (FCVs), respectively, and are important infectious diseases with high fatality rates in members of the Felidae family. While FCoV and FCV belong to two distinct virus families, the Coronaviridae and the Caliciviridae, respectively, they share a dependence on viral 3C-like protease (3CLpro) for their replication. Since 3CLpro is functionally and structurally conserved among these viruses and essential for viral replication, 3

Feline odontoclastic resorptive lesions (FORL), previously known as 'neck lesions,' are commonly known in domestic, but also in non-domestic cats. They are characterized by odontoclastic resorptive processes, which take place at the dental root and at the periodontium. Chronic inflammation of gingiva and periodontium is believed to be an important etiological factor in the development of FORL. In this context, various feline viruses have been discussed to play a relevant role in the pathogenesis of these lesions. The aim of this project was to determine in a blinded study the incidence of FORL

A novel nested PCR (nPCR) assay is reported on the diagnosis of the feline calicivirus (FCV) infection. The test was performed on 47 ocular and 40 pharyngeal swabs collected from 47 cats with respiratory syndrome; among the 87 samples examined, 18 ocular and 23 pharyngeal swabs were positive in nPCR. The nPCR sensitivity was compared to other diagnostic techniques such as virus isolation on cell culture and reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). The nPCR was more sensitive than the virus isolation and RT-PCR; therefore, it can be used for calicivirosis diagnosis in cats.

A soft tissue sarcoma occurred in the interscapular area of a cat, 1 to 7 months after vaccination at that site. The vaccine contained inactivated feline panleucopaenia virus combined with modified live feline herpesvirus and calicivirus. The tumour showed histological features of both fibrosarcoma and malignant fibrous histiocytoma. The tumour was observed to evolve from the site of a presumed postvaccinal granuloma. Local recurrence 6 weeks post excision necessitated more radical resection. Euthanasia was performed 2 years later when pleural effusion developed. The cause of effusion was not
