Midsagittal corpus callosal thickness and cognitive impairment in Parkinson's disease.

People diagnosed with Parkinson's disease (PD) can experience significant neuropsychiatric symptoms, including cognitive impairment and dementia, the neuroanatomical substrates of which are not fully characterised. Symptoms associated with cognitive impairment and dementia in PD may relate to direct structural changes to the corpus callosum via primary white matter pathology or as a secondary outcome due to the degeneration of cortical regions. Using magnetic resonance imaging, the corpus callosum can be investigated at the midsagittal plane, where it converges to a contiguous mass and is not

Restricted diffusion of the callosal splenium is highly specific for seizures in neonates.

BACKGROUND: To determine whether restricted diffusion of the callosal splenium is specific for seizure activity in neonates. METHODS: We performed a retrospective chart review of 123 neonates who had a diagnosis of hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) who underwent therapeutic cooling and had magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) within the first 10 days of life. The regions examined for injury include the callosal splenium, cortex, deep gray matter, and subcortical white matter. Neurodevelopmental outcomes were secondarily assessed using the Bayley Scales of Infant Development at 12 to 18 months

Post-shunting corpus callosal signal change and review of the literature.

MRI signal changes in the corpus callosum can be seen in 8.3% of patients following shunt insertion for obstructive hydrocephalus. Several causes have been hypothesised, including mechanical compression, decompression associated oedema and ischaemia, and overshunting. We present a case of a patient with a pineal tumour of intermediate differentiation (WHO grade III), which had caused long-term obstructive hydrocephalus due to compression of the tectal plate and cerebral aqueduct. Following insertion of a shunt, prominent changes in the corpus callosum became evident on CT and MRI characterised

Neurodevelopmental outcomes in children with prenatally diagnosed corpus callosal abnormalities.

OBJECTIVE: Although corpus callosal abnormalities are among the most common brain malformations detected prenatally, few previous studies have described the neurodevelopmental outcomes of children with this condition. The aim of our study was to evaluate the neurodevelopmental outcomes and associated clinical features of children with corpus callosal abnormalities diagnosed by prenatal ultrasonography. METHODS: Between July 2011 and July 2016, forty-nine children with corpus callosal abnormalities were born in Asan Medical Center Children's Hospital. Neurodevelopmental assessments were conduc

Functional cerebral lateralization and interhemispheric interaction in patients with callosal agenesis.

OBJECTIVE: The corpus callosum (CC), the largest commissure in the human brain, is thought to play an essential part in the formation and maintenance of lateralized cognitive and motor functions. In particular, it has been suggested that inhibition of the subdominant hemisphere via commissural fiber tracts plays a crucial role for functional lateralization. However, many studies supporting this idea have either been conducted in nonhuman model species or used indirect measures of callosal functioning. METHOD: In order to directly assess the impact of the presence or absence of the CC on both

Visual callosal connections: role in visual processing in health and disease.

Visual cortical areas in the two sides of the brain are interconnected by interhemispheric fibers passing through the splenium of the corpus callosum. In this review, we summarize data concerning the anatomical features of visual callosal connections, their roles in basic visual processing, and how their alterations contribute to visual deficits in different human neuropathologies. Splenial fibers represent a population of excitatory axons with varying diameters, which interconnect cortical columns with similar functional properties (i.e., same orientation selectivity) in the two hemispheres.

Imaging spectrum of pediatric corpus callosal pathology: a pictorial review.

A wide spectrum of pediatric corpus callosal diseases can occur in the pediatric age group. Cross-sectional magnetic resonance imaging plays an important role in the diagnosis of these patients. We reviewed our imaging record and collected cases of corpus callosal pathology. The purpose of this review is to illustrate the imaging features of various corpus callosal lesions encountered in children.

Bilateral subcortical heterotopia with partial callosal agenesis in a mouse mutant.

Cognition and behavior depend on the precise placement and interconnection of complex ensembles of neurons in cerebral cortex. Mutations that disrupt migration of immature neurons from the ventricular zone to the cortical plate have provided major insight into mechanisms of brain development and disease. We have discovered a new and highly penetrant spontaneous mutation that leads to large nodular bilateral subcortical heterotopias with partial callosal agenesis. The mutant phenotype was first detected in a colony of fully inbred BXD29 mice already known to harbor a mutation in Tlr4. Neurons c

Distinguishing 3 classes of corpus callosal abnormalities in consanguineous families.

OBJECTIVE: We sought to create a classification system for pediatric corpus callosal abnormalities (CCA) based upon midline sagittal brain MRI. We used the term CCA for patients with structural variants of the corpus callosum, excluding patients with interhemispheric cyst variant or pure dysplasia without hypoplasia. Currently, no system exists for nonsyndromic forms of CCA, and attempts to create such a system have been hampered by highly variable morphology in patients with sporadic CCA. We reasoned that any useful strategy should classify affected family members within the same type, and th

Left hand tactile agnosia after posterior callosal lesion.

We report a patient with a hemorrhagic lesion encroaching upon the posterior third of the corpus callosum but sparing the splenium. She showed marked difficulties in recognizing objects and shapes perceived through her left hand, while she could appreciate elementary sensorial features of items tactually presented to the same hand flawlessly. This picture, corresponding to classical descriptions of unilateral associative tactile agnosia, was associated with finger agnosia of the left hand. This very unusual case report can be interpreted as an instance of disconnection syndrome, and allows a d

Acute Marchiafava-Bignami disease with widespread callosal and cortical lesions.

Marchiafava-Bignami disease (MBD) is a rare alcohol-related disorder that results in progressive demyelination and necrosis of the corpus callosum. The process may extend to the optic chiasm and tracts, cerebellar peduncle, subcortical resion, neighboring white matter, and rarely, cortical gray matter. We report a case of MBD in which fluid-attenuated inversion recovery and diffusion magnetic resonance imaging studies revealed symmetrical hyperintense lesions in the cerebral cortex in addition to the callosal lesions.

Callosal morphology in Williams syndrome: a new evaluation of shape and thickness.

We applied novel mesh-based geometrical modeling methods to calculate and compare the thickness of the corpus callosum at high spatial resolution and to create profiles of average callosal shape in a well-matched sample (n=24) of individuals with Williams syndrome and controls. In close agreement with previous observations, superimposed surface maps indicate that the corpus callosum in Williams syndrome individuals is shorter and less curved. Moreover, we observed significantly thinner callosal regions in Williams syndrome individuals across the posterior surface, where group effects were less

Interfrontal commissural abnormality in schizophrenia: tractography-assisted callosal parcellation.

Previous studies have indicated abnormal fiber connectivity of the corpus callosum (CC) in schizophrenia. This study investigated whether the interfrontal commissural region of the CC is decreased in schizophrenia, by partitioning the CC using a function-anatomically relevant internal landmark derived from tractographic analysis of diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). T1 weighted and DTI images were acquired by 3T-MRI. Using tractography, the interfrontal commissural region (anterior part) was partitioned from the rest of the CC in 40 schizophrenia patients and 36 healthy controls. Schizophrenia pa

Paralinguistic processing in children with callosal agenesis: emergence of neurolinguistic deficits.

Recent research revealed impaired processing of both nonliteral meaning and affective prosody in adults with agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC) and normal intelligence. Since normal children have incomplete myelination of the corpus callosum, it was hypothesized that paralanguage deficits in children with ACC would be less apparent relative to their peers. The Familiar and Novel Language Comprehension Test (FANL-C) and Prosody Test were given to 18 children with ACC and normal intelligence and 17 controls matched for age (7-13 years), education, and IQ (83-122). When controlling for age, ch

Arthrogryposis multiplex congenita with callosal agenesis and dentato-olivary dysplasia.

We report the autopsy case of a boy with arthrogryposis multiplex congenita, associated with callosal agenesis and dentato-olivary dysplasia. The patient manifested with dysmorphic facial features and suffered from intractable epilepsy during the neonatal period. These sets of complications suggest that a common molecular mechanism may be involved in the development of corpus callosum and the folding of the dentate and inferior olivary nuclei. Deep brain structures, including the brainstem and the cerebellum, may be involved in the pathophysiology of symptomatic generalized epilepsy. The diffe

Interhemispheric coherence of the sleep electroencephalogram in mice with congenital callosal dysgenesis.

Regional differences in the effect of sleep deprivation on the sleep electroencephalogram (EEG) may be related to interhemispheric synchronization. To investigate the role of the corpus callosum in interhemispheric EEG synchronization, coherence spectra were computed in mice with congenital callosal dysgenesis (B1) under baseline conditions and after 6-h sleep deprivation, and compared with the spectra of a control strain (C57BL/6). In B1 mice coherence was lower than in controls in all vigilance states. The level of coherence in each of the three totally acallosal mice was lower than in the m

IFAP syndrome "plus" seizures, mental retardation, and callosal hypoplasia.

Ichthyosis follicularis, congenital alopecia, and photophobia are typical features of a rare X-linked recessive disorder termed ichthyosis follicularis with atrichia and photophobia syndrome. A 3-year-old male with these findings and severe growth failure, mental retardation, generalized seizures, vascularizing keratitis, nail anomalies, inguinal hernia, and a normal chromosome constitution is presented. Two maternal male relatives were affected by the same condition. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed corpus callosum hypoplasia not described at present. Syndromes with alopecia, seizures, and
