Cannabis for morning sickness: areas for intervention to decrease cannabis consumption during pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Cannabis use during pregnancy is increasing, with 19-22% of patients testing positive at delivery in Colorado and California. Patients report using cannabis to alleviate their nausea and vomiting, anxiety, and pain. However, preclinical and clinical data highlight harmful effects to offspring physiology and behavior following fetal cannabis exposure. This narrative review identifies potential areas for intervention to decrease cannabis consumption during pregnancy. METHODS: A combination of keywords, including "cannabis", "cannabis", "weed", "pregnancy", "morning sickness", "child

Can cannabis kill? Characteristics of deaths following cannabis use in England (1998-2020).

BACKGROUND: Cannabis is the most widely used illegal drug but is rarely considered a causal factor in death. AIMS: This study aimed to understand trends in deaths in England where cannabinoids were detected at post-mortem, and to evaluate the clinical utility of post-mortem cannabinoid concentrations in coronial investigations. METHODS: Deaths with cannabinoid detections reported to the National Programme on Substance Abuse Deaths (NPSAD) were extracted and analysed. RESULTS: From 1998 to 2011, on average 7% of all cases reported to NPSAD had a cannabinoid detected (n = 110 deaths per year)

Increasing use of cannabis edibles in response to recreational cannabis legalization in the United States.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the associations between recreational cannabis legalization in the United States and primary mode of cannabis use (smoking, eating/drinking, vaporizing/dabbing) overall and across groups. METHODS: We linked data on 69,109 adults reporting past month cannabis use from 37 states in the 2017-2023 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System with recreational cannabis legalization and retail sales. Using multinomial logit regression models, we examined the associations between legalization and primary mode of cannabis use overall and by demographic and higher-risk strata, wit

Psychometric validation of the Cannabis Withdrawal Checklist in a Spanish sample with cannabis use disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Cannabis is used globally. In Spain, it is often used in combination with tobacco, which may exacerbate withdrawal severity. Currently, no validated instrument exists to assess cannabis withdrawal symptoms in Spanish populations. This study aimed to validate the 15-item Cannabis (Marijuana) Withdrawal Checklist (CWC) for Spanish-speaking individuals who co-use cannabis and tobacco. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This psychometric validation study was nested within a multicenter longitudinal project conducted across 10 substance use treatment programs in Catalonia (Spain). The CWC was fo

Patterns of delta 8 THC and cannabis uptake in Nebraska: A cannabis prohibition state.

BACKGROUND: Following the passage of the 2018 Farm Bill, derived psychoactive cannabis products containing delta 8 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) have become increasingly popular across the US, particularly in states that lack medical or recreational cannabis programs. Despite this, little is known about patterns of delta 8 THC use. METHODS: A sample of Nebraska residents (a state without legal medical or recreational cannabis) were surveyed to gather data on substance use, including delta 8 THC and cannabis, across the state. Then, logistic regressions were used to calculate relative odds ratios

Conceptualizing and considering Cannabis-Related "Harm-to-Others": The Role of Cannabis-Related Violence.

Public health-oriented frameworks for cannabis use of control, including legalization, are evolving. Most frameworks aim to reduce cannabis-related health harms that materialize among users; there has been comparably limited focus on cannabis-related "harm-to-others". A longstanding issue for other psychoactive substances, and increasingly recognized form of cannabis-related harm-to-others involves violence/aggression. We briefly review relevant epidemiological and psycho-behavioral data related to cannabis-related violence and aggression, and discuss intervention prospects. Systematic review

Influence of pregabalin maintenance on cannabis effects and related behaviors in daily cannabis users.

No medications are approved for cannabis use disorder (CUD), though a small clinical trial demonstrated that the voltage-dependent calcium channel (VDCC) ligand gabapentin reduced cannabis use in treatment seekers. VDCCs are modulated by cannabinoid (CB) ligands, and there are shared effects between CB agonists and VDCC ligands. This overlapping neuropharmacology and the initial clinical results supported the evaluation of pregabalin, a "next-generation" VDCC ligand, as a CUD medication. Two separate placebo-controlled, double-blind, counterbalanced, within-subjects human laboratory studies te

Children's Knowledge of Cannabis and Other Substances in States with Different Cannabis Use Regulations.

Background: Public acceptance of cannabis continues to increase across the US, yet there has been little research on how cannabis legalization affects young children. The present study compared knowledge of cannabis and other substances among children living in states with different cannabis laws and examined whether the association between such substance knowledge and externalizing behavior varies by state cannabis regulations. Methods: Participants were from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive DevelopmentSM Study (ABCD Study®) at the baseline assessment (N = 11,875, ages 9-11, collected from 2016

Cannabis Use in Patients With Inflammatory Bowel Disease Following Legalization of Cannabis in Canada.

BACKGROUND: Cannabis is used by patients with Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) as an alternative to, or in combination with, conventional therapies to treat symptoms such as abdominal pain, poor sleep, and reduced appetite. The clinical efficacy of cannabis for these disorders is controversial, with some studies showing harmful outcomes associated with its use. Previous studies suggest that cannabis is used by ~12% of patients with UC and ~16% of patients with CD in the USA despite legal prohibition. METHODS: We conducted a prospective cohort study of adult patients with infla

Exploring cannabis use by patients with multiple sclerosis in a state where cannabis is legal.

BACKGROUND: Studies suggest cannabis may improve symptoms like pain and muscle spasticity in patients with multiple sclerosis (PwMS). Despite cannabis' new-found legality and availability, few studies have explored the profile of PwMS cannabis users and characteristics of their use, particularly in a state where cannabis is legal both for recreational and medicinal use. The purpose of the current study was to evaluate cannabis use among PwMS at a large academic multiple sclerosis (MS) clinic, specifically: (1) prevalence, (2) products used (e.g., cannabidiol vs Δ9-tetrahydocannabinol), (3) sym

Cannabis-related impairment and social anxiety: the roles of gender and cannabis use motives.

Social anxiety appears to be especially related to cannabis-related problems, yet the nature of this association remains unclear. Some data suggest that socially anxious men may be especially vulnerable to problematic cannabis use. The current study examined the relations between social anxiety, cannabis use and use-related problems, and motives for cannabis use by gender among 174 (42.5% female) current (past-month) cannabis users. Among men, social anxiety was significantly, positively related to the number of cannabis-related problems and coping and conformity motives. Coping and conformity

Associations of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol quantity and Cannabis use frequency with Cannabis use disorder among adults who use Cannabis in the United States.

OBJECTIVE: We examined how milligrams of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (mgTHC) per using day and cannabis use frequency relate to cannabis use disorder (CUD). METHODS: From Aug 2024-Jan 2025, N = 3303 past-month cannabis users in the United States completed the Cannabis Exposure Index online survey. We used logistic and linear regression to examine three CUD outcomes: (1) diagnosis, (2) individual criterion endorsement, and (3) total criteria count. Model predictors included mgTHC per using day, cannabis use frequency, and sociodemographics. RESULTS: Higher mgTHC predicted greater odds of CUD

Coping Motives Mediate the Association of Trauma History with Problematic Cannabis Use in Young Adult Medical Cannabis Patients and Non-Patient Cannabis Users.

Background: Despite evidence of the contribution of childhood trauma to the development of problematic cannabis use, its mediating pathways are largely unknown. Given the link between cannabis motives with trauma and problematic cannabis use, motives of use may represent a construct through which trauma impacts problematic cannabis use. Methods: A sample of 339 medical cannabis patient and non-patient young adult users from the Los Angeles area were sampled at baseline and one year later. The current study examined the impact of childhood trauma on problematic use through a variety of cannabis

Δ9-Tetrahydrocannabinol and Cannabidiol Time Courses in the Sera of "Light Cannabis" Smokers: Discriminating Light Cannabis Use from Illegal and Medical Cannabis Use.

BACKGROUND: Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) time courses in serum and physiological and behavioral effects associated with smoking 1 or 4 "light cannabis" cigarettes were studied. Biomarkers to differentiate light cannabis versus illegal and medical cannabis use were also investigated. METHODS: Sera were obtained at different times from 6 healthy light cannabis consumers and 6 individuals who smoked 1 and 4 cigarettes, within 4 hours through a liquid-liquid method and analyzed by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. RESULTS: In serum, minimal THC concentration

Anxiety Sensitivity and Coping-Oriented Cannabis Use: The Moderating Role of Positive Cannabis Expectancies.

INTRODUCTION: Coping-oriented cannabis use is a robust predictor of hazardous cannabis use. Anxiety sensitivity (AS), the fear of anxiety-related sensations, may be a risk factor for coping-oriented cannabis use, however, findings are mixed in prior literature. The current study aimed to clarify inconsistent research by incorporating the role of positive cannabis expectancies, such as belief that cannabis use results in relaxation or positive social outcomes, in the association between AS, its subfactors, and coping-oriented cannabis use. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Undergraduates (n = 232) report

Oregon Adults' Cannabis and Alcohol Use: Associations With Local Cannabis Retail Access, 2014-2022.

INTRODUCTION: A state representative sample was used to test the associations between local access to cannabis retailers and Oregon adults' cannabis and alcohol use outcomes as well as differential associations by age group. METHODS: Respondents' 30-day cannabis use (1+ days) and frequent use (10+ days) and 30-day binge drinking and heavy alcohol use were drawn from Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System surveys (2014-2022) and matched with a geospatial density measure of local cannabis retail access by respondent ZIP code. Models adjusted for time trends. Analyses were run in 2023-2024.

Compliance With Cannabis Act Regulations Regarding Online Promotion Among Canadian Commercial Cannabis-Licensed Firms.

IMPORTANCE: As global jurisdictions shift toward cannabis legalization, 2 areas of public health importance relate to exposure to youth and to truthful promotion. Although Canada's Cannabis Act specifies many prohibitions related to cannabis promotion, no systematic monitoring or enforcement among licensed firms exists. Compliance with marketing regulations has effects beyond Canadian citizens because of the global outreach of websites and social media. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate compliance among licensed firms with the Cannabis Act and analyze trends among violations regarding promotional mater
