In the second article of this series, we discuss the diagnosis and treatment of some important intestinal nematodes. Common parasites discussed in detail include Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura, hookworm, and Enterobius vermicularis (pinworm). In addition, Strongyloides stercoralis has emerged as an important pathogen in immunocompromised patients, and Capillaria philippinensis is now recognized as an important cause of diarrhea in Asia. Finally, anisakiasis and other illnesses due to parasitic nematodes are discussed.

The family Capillaridae comprises of nematodes within the order Trichinellida that parasitize a wide range of vertebrate hosts, targeting the gastrointestinal, respiratory, and urinary tracts. While these helminths are frequently recorded in scientific literature, few studies report their presence in other anatomical sites such as the tongue. With that in mind, this study provides a systematic review of articles from 1975 to January 2026 focusing on the description of the presence and pathological alterations caused by helminths from the family Capillariidae whose habitat is the tongue of anim

The study's objective was to evaluate the in vivo effectiveness of the combination of ivermectin + praziquantel + fenbendazole (I+P+F) against intestinal nematodes and cestodes in fighting birds. Fecal samples were taken from 181 birds to estimate the frequency of intestinal helminths. For the evaluation of anthelmintic efficacy, the birds were randomly distributed into four groups (10-19 birds/group) according to the anthelmintic evaluated: ivermectin (0.4 mg/kg orally), praziquantel (10 mg/kg orally), fenbendazole (16 mg/kg orally), and the combination of I+P+F (ivermectin 0.4 mg/kg + praziq

Capillaria philippinensis eggs, larvae, and adults were identified in the stool of a 41-year-old female physician from Cairo, Egypt, who had never traveled abroad. She had eaten local and imported fish. She suffered from borborygmi, abdominal pain, severe diarrhea, vomiting, and loss of weight for greater than 3 months. Treatment with Flubendazole (R17889-Janssen) 200 mg twice daily for 30 days resulted in clinical and parasitological cure.

In the Argentinian Atlantic Forest (AAF) of Misiones, opossums comprise 13% of the wild mammalian diversity. The white-eared opossum, Didelphis albiventris, and the southern black-eared opossum, D. aurita are sympatric marsupials, and the most frequent mammals in the northern Misiones. In this study, we describe the helminth assemblages from both D. albiventris and D. aurita in the northern AAF. We found a total of 15 species of helminths: 2 trematodes, 1 cestode, 11 nematodes and 1 acanthocephalan. The specific richness in D. albiventris was 12, while in D. aurita was it 13. Both opossum's sp

Calodium hepaticum (syn. Capillaria hepatica) is a nematode responsible for parasitic zoonosis that can cause granulomatous lesions in the liver. Although murids are the main hosts, C. hepaticum has been documented in a wide range of mammals. Here, we report a case of hepatic calodiosis in a 6-month-old dog that was rescued in the municipality of Cuiabá, Mato Grosso state, midwestern Brazil. Even after being attended at a Veterinary Hospital, the case resulted in animal death. Necroscopic examination revealed significant macroscopic changes in the spleen, liver, and encephalus. Microscopic exa

Eucoleus garfiai (syn. Capillaria garfiai) is a nematode infecting lingual tissue of domestic and wild swine. Prevalence data for this parasite are scant and often related to accidental findings, occurring only in Japan and a few European countries. In this study, an epidemiological survey was performed in order to identify E. garfiai in wild boar from the Campania region, southern Italy. A total of 153 wild boar carcasses were inspected over the course of two hunting seasons (2019-2020). Histological examinations were performed on tongue samples fixed and stained with haematoxylin and eosin.

Crenosoma vulpis, the fox lungworm, is a helminth parasite endemic to the fox population of New England. Domestic dogs are susceptible to infection via ingestion of snails and slugs. Two dogs from New England were diagnosed with C. vulpis. The predominant clinical sign in both dogs was a chronic cough. Treatment with steroids and antibiotics only temporarily relieved clinical signs. Thoracic radiographs in both dogs revealed bronchial patterns. Endotracheal washes were performed in each dog revealing marked, mixed inflammation consisting mainly of neutrophils with eosinophils in lesser numbers

The flowerhorn cichlid is a popular ornamental fish in many Asian countries. The present study reports the occurrence of Paracapillaria philippinensis (Chitwood et al., 1968), a parasitic nematode in flowerhorn cichlid (Cichlasoma sp.) from south India. The infected fish demonstrated clinical symptoms viz. dark coloration, poor appetite, lethargy, erratic swimming, and white stringy faeces. Microscopic observation of the intestinal content and faeces revealed the presence of adult worms, larvae, and unembryonated eggs. PCR amplification of eukaryotic 18S rRNA, P. philippinensis-specific SSU rR

Capillaria philippinensis is a rare zoonotic intestinal parasite that emerged in the 1960s. The outcome of intestinal capillariasis may be fatal if untreated in due time. We report three cases of intestinal capillariasis in Lao People's Democratic Republic (Lao PDR). The three patients were unrelated previously healthy young men (24, 26, and 27 years of age) with no underlying disease or immune depression. They had chronic diarrhea, abdominal pain, edema, and severe weight loss. Two of them acquired the infection in Thailand; the other patient had no travel history outside Lao PDR. All patient

This study updates current information on the occurrence of Capillaria aerophila, Capillaria boehmi and Angiostrongylus vasorum infections in dogs from Italy, along with the evaluation of the occurrence of intestinal parasites. Fecal samples collected from a total of 2000 dogs living in the majority of the Italian regions were subjected to Baermann examination and flotation. Animals were selected according to a series of criteria to ensure the enrollment of dogs at risk to be infected by nematodes. A binomial logistic regression was performed to detect statistically significant associations be

The clinico-pathologic features of Capillaria hepatica infection in a 27-year-old Nigerian woman are discussed. This animal parasite has been encountered only rarely in humans. Less than 30 cases of human infection, mostly in children, having been recorded as far as the present authors are aware. This is the first case of hepatic capillariasis reported in West Africa. The pathologic features of this patient is marked by severe hepatic fibrosis, and this is correlated with disordered liver function. The possibility of histopathologic confusion with schistosomiasis mansoni is discussed.

There are limited data on the efficacy of antiparasitic treatments and husbandry methods to control nematode infections in captive populations of African green monkeys (AGMs), Chlorocebus sabaeus. In faecal egg count (FEC) tests, 10 of the 11 (91%) adult male AGMs captured from the large feral population on the island of St Kitts had evidence of nematode infections, mostly Capillaria (8/11, 73%), Trichuris trichiura (7/11, 64%) and strongylid species (7/11, 64%) specifically (hookworm and Trichostrongylus, 50/50), but also Strongyloides fuelleborni (1/11, 9%). When kept in individual cages wit

A new nematode, Crocodylocapillaria longiovata n. gen. and n. sp., is described from the stomach of wild and farmed young crocodiles, Crocodylus johnstoni Krefft, and Crocodylus porosus Schneider, from northern Australia and Papua New Guinea; it is undoubtedly identical with the nematodes previously reported as Capillaria sp. from Crocodylus novaequineae Schmidt from Irian Jaya, Indonesia. This capillariid species represents a new genus, being characterized mainly by the presence of elongate eggs with unusually long protruding polar plugs, a well developed vulvar appendage, a weakly sclerotize

Infection rate of imported monkeys, under this study, with intestinal protozoa is higher than the infection rate with intestinal nematodes. Mostly encountered protozoa were E. coli, E. nana, E. histolytica and I. butschlii. Formalin-Ether concentration method yielded higher % positive for E. histolytica than the culture method using Tanabe-Chiba medium, but the results obtained from these 2 methods correlate perfectly well with each other. Efficacy of thiabendazole against intestinal nematodes such as Strongyloides, Trichuris, Physaloptera, Oesophagostomum and Capillaria was very satisfactory.

Intestinal capillariasis in humans is caused by a nematode- Capillaria philippinensis, which infects small fresh water or brackish fish and some fish eating birds. It has occurred in areas where people eat raw fish such as the Philippines and Thailand. This paper reports a case of a women with intestinal capillariasis in Menouf, in the Nile Delta of Egypt. It is the second case to be reported from the same area of Menouf. Microscopic examination of stool revealed eggs, larvae and adult male and female worms of C. philippinensis. This was successfully treated with Albendazole.

This report is about the case of gastritis associated with capillariasis. The patient was a 52-yr-old Korean woman who occasionally ate raw fish and chicken. She complained of mild abdominal pain and nausea, but not diarrhea. An endoscopic examination revealed an exudative flat erosive change on the gastric mucosa of the antrum. She was microscopically diagnosed as chronic gastritis with numerous eosinophil infiltrations. The sectioned worms and eggs in mucosa were morphologically regarded as belonging to the genus Capillaria. This is the first case of gastric capillariasis reported in the Rep
