Excess burden of hospitalizations in adults with diabetes - a national US cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVE: The true burden of diabetes is likely underestimated by not considering the full range of complications associated with diabetes. Our aim was to compare cause-specific hospitalizations in adults with vs. without diabetes. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Our denominator included all adults with and without self-reported diabetes from the 2019 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System Survey, weighted to reflect the U.S. POPULATION: Our numerator, age-standardized risks of ICD-10-CM-defined inpatient hospitalizations and emergency department (ED) visits, were identified from the 2019

β-Caryophyllene in the Essential Oil from Chrysanthemum Boreale Induces G1 Phase Cell Cycle Arrest in Human Lung Cancer Cells.

Chrysanthemum boreale is a plant widespread in East Asia, used in folk medicine to treat various disorders, such as pneumonia, colitis, stomatitis, and carbuncle. Whether the essential oil from C. boreale (ECB) and its active constituents have anti-proliferative activities in lung cancer is unknown. Therefore, we investigated the cytotoxic effects of ECB in A549 and NCI-H358 human lung cancer cells. Culture of A549 and NCI-H358 cells with ECB induced apoptotic cell death, as revealed by an increase in annexin V staining. ECB treatment reduced mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP), disrupted t

Treatment of staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome.

Humans are a natural reservoir for Staphylococcal aureus. Colonization begins soon after birth and predisposes to infection. S. aureus is one of the most common causes of skin infection, giving rise to folliculitis, furunculosis, carbuncles, ecthyma, impetigo, cellulitis and abscesses. In addition, S. aureus may cause a number of toxin-mediated life-threatening diseases, including staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome (SSSS). Epidermolytic toxins released by certain S. aureus strains cause SSSS by cleaving the epidermal cell adhesion molecule, desmogelin-1, resulting in superficial skin erosion

Devastating scalp infections.

The treatment of scalp wounds is occasionally complicated by infection. Although infected scalp wounds are generally limited and readily treated, they can progress to devastating proportions if not promptly and aggressively managed. This report highlights three such cases of severe infection: extensive subgaleal abscess, fatal necrotizing fasciitis, and widespread carbunculosis. The authors emphasize the need for proper assessment of scalp wounds, meticulous cleansing and closure of all fresh wounds, definitive drainage of newly infected wounds, and adherence to sound surgical principles in ma

[Examining fermented mustard brine in terms of traditional Chinese medicine].

Fermented mustard brine was a unique liquid fermented with mustard long used in traditional Chinese medicine. It was previously known as Ji Shui, which refered to the yellow salty water after vegetables were fermented. Fermented mustard brine was not established in TCM until the Ming Dynasty. It was found that the original plant of ancient mustard was Brassica juncea (L.) Czern et Coss. var. juncea, and the origin of the mustard used in mustard brine mainly refereed to the cultivated species of Brassica (Brassica juncea var. multiceps Tsen et Lee) in the Brassica branch of the Cruciferae famil

Protective Effect of n-Butanol Extract from Viola yedoensis on Immunological Liver Injury.

Viola yedoensis Makino was used to treat inflammation, viral hepatitis, acute pyogenic infection, and ulcerative carbuncles. However, the protective effect on immunological liver injury (ILI) of V. yedoensis had been rarely reported. This study aimed to explore the protective effect of n-butanol extract (BE) from V. yedoensis on ILI in vitro and in vivo. In vitro, the BE significantly inhibited the secretions of Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and Hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg) in the HepG2.2.15 cells and the replication of HBV DNA. The research data in vivo revealed that the BE reduced the
