Primary large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the breast: radiologic and pathologic findings.

Some breast neoplasms are classified as primary neuroendocrine carcinomas because they are positive for neuroendocrine markers. Although neuroendocrine carcinomas can originate from various organs of the body, primary neuroendocrine carcinomas of the breast are extremely rare. The diagnosis of primary neuroendocrine carcinoma of the breast can only be made if nonmammary sites are confidently excluded or if an in situ component can be found. Here we report a primary large-cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (LCNL) involving the left breast. Breast ultrasonography revealed a lobulated, heterogeneous,

Ectopic ACTH syndrome associated with large-cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the lung.

Although ectopic adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) syndrome (EAS) is a well-known paraneoplastic phenomenon, an association with large-cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the lung (LCNEC) has not been reported. We describe a 63-year-old man with metastatic LCNEC to the left temporomandibular joint (TMJ) who presented with progressive muscle weakness and bilateral lower leg edema for 2 weeks. He did not have a typical Cushingoid appearance nor used diuretics. His newly noted hypertension, hypokalemia (plasma potassium (K) concentration 1.8 mEq/L) with renal K wasting, and metabolic alkalosis sugg

[Large cell carcinoma with chest wall infiltration combined with contralateral giant bulla].

A 48-year-old male consulted the department of respiratory medicine for right precordial pain occurring from the beginning of May 2004. Chest X-ray indicated a tumorous shadow in the right upper lung field and a large left lung cyst. Although chest wall infiltration was suspected based on computed tomography (CT) demonstrating a mass lesion in the right S2, there was no significant swelling of the mediastinal lymph node. On the left side, the lung was markedly compressed by a large cyst in the left upper lobe. Since bronchoscopy failed to establish a definitive diagnosis, the patient was refer

Venous leg ulcers and squamous cell carcinoma: a large-scale epidemiological study.

In order to obtain a precise estimate of the relative risk of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) in venous leg ulcers, we matched 10,913 patients with the diagnosis venous leg ulcer from the Swedish Inpatient Registry with registrations of SCC of the lower limb recorded by the Swedish Cancer Registry, and found 33 cases of non-melanoma skin cancer. After scrutinizing the pathology and case records, 17 cases of SCC were considered as being certainly secondary to venous leg ulcers, whereas in six cases of remitting/relapsing ulcers the connection was probable. The relative risk calculated on 17 cases

Poorly Differentiated Large Cell Neuroendocrine Carcinoma of the Colon: A Case Report.

Colon cancer is one of the most common diagnoses of cancer and a leading cause of death in America. Large cell neuroendocrine tumors are a very uncommon type of colon cancer that tends to have a poor prognosis. Usually, these tumors are only found at the time of metastasis making them even more difficult to treat. A 65-year-old female presented with worsened generalized abdominal pain associated with abdominal distention. She had not had a bowel movement in over a week and did not have any flatulence. She had a colonoscopy four years prior that was normal. Physical examination was significant

Pure large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma originating from the endometrium: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (LCNEC) of the endometrium is an uncommon and highly aggressive tumor that has not been comprehensively characterized. We report a case of pure endometrial LCNEC and review the current literature of similar cases to raise awareness of the histological features, treatment, and prognosis of this tumor. CASE SUMMARY: We report the case of a 73-year-old woman who presented with irregular postmenopausal vaginal bleeding. Ultrasonography showed an enlarged uterus and a 5.1 cm × 3.3 cm area of medium and low echogenicity in the uterine cavity. Biopsy b

Primary large-cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the upper ureter: A case report.

RATIONALE: The incidence of primary large-cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (LCNEC) is extremely rare in the urinary tract. In the present study, we investigated a case of primary LCNEC associated with the upper ureter. PATIENT CONCERN: A 58-year-old Korean female patient with right ureter mass, which was accidentally detected. An enhancing mass measuring 3.3 cm in size was found in the computed tomography (CT) scan. No definitive evidence of lymph node and distant metastasis was observed. DIAGNOSIS: Histopathological analysis revealed large atypical epithelial cells in upper ureter mass, based

An Unusually Aggressive Large Cell Carcinoma of the Lung: Undiagnosed until Autopsy.

Large cell carcinoma (LCC) of the lung has a rapid mean volume doubling time (VDT) of around 67-134 days. In some cases of LCC where the VDT is extremely rapid, clinical presentation may mimic acute lung pathologies such as pneumonia. We describe a rare presentation of an aggressive LCC of the lung with an estimated VDT of around two weeks. A 52-year-old male with a history schizophrenia presented with fever, cough, and dyspnea for three weeks duration. His medical history was significant for a recent admission six weeks before current presentation for myocardial infarction (MI) and pneumonia.

Large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the ileocecal junction with well differentiation adenocarcinoma.

Neuroendocrine tumors are unique and rare tumors originating from neuroendocrine cells. Large cell neuroendocrine tumors have been found in almost every organ such as gastrointestinal tract, bronchopulmonary, pancreas, uterine cervix, urinary bladder and salivary gland, but primary sites in gastrointestinal tract and lung are the most frequent. These neoplasms show neuroendocrine differentiation in organizational structure, which requires further confirmation with immunohistochemistry or electron microscope. In immunohistochemistry staining, pure neuroendocrine areas are diffusely stained posi

Primary large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the renal pelvis: a case report.

We report a case of primary large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the renal pelvis, diagnosed in a 79-year-old man. The abdominal computed tomography showed a solid, vegetant lesion in the left renal pelvis, conditioning marked hydronephrosis. The patient underwent radical nephroureterectomy. The histological examination showed a large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma associated with a high-grade urothelial carcinoma, with local invasion (pT3). Large cell renal neuroendocrine carcinomas are rare tumors with an aggressive course and a bad prognosis. At present, only five cases were reported in li

Ectopic calcitonin secretion in a woman with large cell neuroendocrine lung carcinoma.

OBJECTIVE: Serum calcitonin (CT) is a sensitive but not specific marker for medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC). There are a large number of conditions that may elevate CT levels. CASE REPORT: Herein we present the case of a 47-year old woman with Hashimoto thyroiditis, goiter, cervical lymphadenopathy and high CT and CEA levels. After surgical extirpation of the lymph node neuroendocrine cancer metastasis was suspected. Computed tomography of the chest showed a tumor mass on the right lung. Bronchoscopy was performed and pathological and immunohistochemical analysis revealed large cell neuroen

Ectopic ACTH syndrome associated with large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the thymus.

A 38-year-old man was admitted for evaluation of Cushing's syndrome. Physical findings showed swelling of the face, and hypertension, but not Cushingoid stigmata. Laboratory data revealed serum cortisol level of 34.1 µg/dL and plasma ACTH of 140 pg/mL. Overnight administration of 1 and 8 mg dexamethasone did not suppress plasma ACTH or serum cortisol. Chest X-ray showed a mass at the upper-anterior quadrant of the mediastinum, and chest CT scan revealed a heterogenous tumor of approximately 60 mm in diameter, which infiltrated into the superior vena cava and ascending aorta, and caused superio

Successful treatment of adrenal metastases from large-cell carcinoma of the lung.

Although on a weight basis the adrenal gland is the most common site of extranodal spread from lung cancer, antemortem diagnosis and successful therapy of adrenal metastasis are rare. We have treated two patients with apparently solitary metastases in the adrenal gland from large-cell carcinomas of the lung using a combination of adrenalectomy and vigorous therapy to the primary site. Both patients experienced symptomatic relief, and, in contrast to the expected short survival in lung cancer with distant metastasis, they remain well six years and 14 years after treatment.

Synchronous double cancers of colonic large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma and gastric squamous-cell carcinoma: a case report and review of literature.

Either colonic large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (LCNEC) or gastric squamous-cell carcinoma (SCC) is extremely rare, with a very poor prognosis due to the high rate of distant metastases. Here, we report the first case of synchronous double malignancies in form of colonic LCNEC and gastric SCC. A 66-year male underwent a right hemicolectomy for a mass obstructing the ascending colon and an emergent gastroscopic hemostasis for another hemorrhagic stomach mass. Histopathological examination confirmed colonic LCNEC displaying the characteristic of large, vesicular nuclei with variable amounts o

Large Cell Neuroendocrine Carcinoma of the Skin/Conjunctiva: A Series of 6 Cases including 1 Combined Case With Squamous Cell Carcinoma.

This study sought to reveal the clinicopathologic characteristics of large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (LCNEC) of the skin/conjunctiva. The retrieved patients included 3 men and 3 women with a median age of 85 (63-95) years. All lesions occurred on the face, including the ears, with a median tumor size of 11.5 (7-65) mm. Lymph node metastasis was observed in 5 (83%) of 6 cases, and distant metastasis was noted in 2 (33%). One patient (17%) who had a 13-mm-sized tumor died of the tumor 13 months after excision. All tumors were mainly located in the dermis, and one of them also exhibited intra

Differential genetic expression in large versus small clear cell renal cell carcinoma: results from microarray analysis.

PURPOSE: Tumor growth and progression requires multiple steps and genetic alterations. The molecular events that occur as tumors increase in size are unknown. Patients with von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) provide a unique opportunity to study molecular alterations during tumor growth as these patients develop multiple bilateral renal tumors. To better characterize biologic events associated with tumor growth, we evaluated the alterations in gene expression in large versus small renal tumors removed from the same kidney of the same individuals. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: We reviewed pathology reports from p

Merkel Cell Carcinoma in the Setting of Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia and Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma.

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare, rapidly growing, and highly malignant cutaneous tumor that typically presents in elderly males as an erythematous or violaceous plaque or nodule in sun-exposed areas. Risk factors include long-term ultraviolet (UV) exposure, Merkel cell polyomavirus (MCV) infection, immunosuppression, and lymphoproliferative disorders such as chronic lymphocytic leukemia/small lymphocytic lymphoma (CLL/SLL). Given the aggressive nature of this tumor, patients may present with nodal and distal metastasis. Locoregional disease can be managed with definitive radiotherapy or
