An Unexpected Malignancy Behind Pediatric Microangiopathic Hemolytic Anemia: Gastric Signet Ring Cell Carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: In the pediatric population, gastrointestinal (GIS) cancers are rare, and paraneoplastic syndromes associated with these malignancies are even more uncommon. OBSERVATIONS: A 15-year-old patient with a clinical presentation of microangiopathic hemolytic anemia (MAHA) resistant to plasma exchange was found to have metastatic adenocarcinoma in a biopsy of a supraclavicular lymphadenopathy. Subsequent endoscopy revealed gastric signet ring cell carcinoma. CONCLUSIONS: This case highlights that malignancy should be suspected in pediatric patients with MAHA who are unresponsive to plas

Signet-ring cell colon carcinoma in a Northern Ghanaian child: a case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Colorectal cancer (CRC) in children represents less than 1% of pediatric malignancies worldwide. Signet-ring cell carcinoma (SC), a subtype associated with mucin-producing phenotypes and distinct molecular pathways, is infrequently encountered in this age group, particularly in low-resource settings. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 10-year-old boy presented with 1 month of right lower quadrant pain, progressive abdominal distension, anorexia, constipation, and weight loss. Radiologic studies (plain abdominal X-ray, barium enema, and CT scan) showed right-sided colonic obs

Stomach and beyond: imaging the linitis plastica phenotype in signet ring cell carcinoma.

The linitis plastica (LP) phenotype is characterized by diffuse infiltrative mural thickening, reduced distensibility, and absent or subtle mucosal abnormality. It creates a diagnostic paradox in which cross-sectional imaging may suggest advanced malignancy while superficial endoscopic biopsies remain nondiagnostic. This review addresses three key radiologic tasks: recognizing the infiltrative, non-polypoid pattern on cross-sectional imaging; distinguishing it from malignant, benign, and technical mimics; and identifying when persistent imaging suspicion should prompt recommendation of EUS-gui

Management of two extremely aggressive signet ring cell colon carcinoma: a case series.

Signet ring cell carcinoma (SRCC) of the colon is a rare histologic subtype of colorectal cancer, accounting for <1% of cases, and is associated with aggressive clinical behavior and poor prognosis. We report two cases with advanced colonic SRCC. The first case involved a 58-year-old female with obstructing rectal SRCC and extensive pelvic invasion with adnexal metastasis. The second is a 45-year-old male with an obstructing splenic flexure SRCC and peritoneal dissemination, found to have microsatellite instability and multiple oncogenic alterations. Both cases required aggressive surgical int

Challenges in Diagnostic Imaging of Appendiceal Signet Ring Cell Carcinoma: A Case Report.

Appendiceal signet ring cell carcinoma (ASRC) is an exceptionally rare and aggressive malignancy, representing < 0.1% of gastrointestinal neoplasms. Its nonspecific imaging manifestations frequently mimic inflammatory conditions such as appendicitis, leading to delayed diagnosis. We report a diagnostically challenging case of a 75-year-old woman with recurrent right lower abdominal pain over 6 months. Initial ultrasonography revealed appendiceal wall thickening (19.5 mm diameter) without layered structure loss, suggestive of chronic appendicitis. Follow-up computed tomography (CT) demonstrated

Gastric Signet Ring Cell Carcinoma Metastasis From Lobular Breast Cancer: A Diagnostic Pitfall.

Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer among women worldwide. Gastric metastasis from invasive lobular carcinoma of the breast is unusual. We report the case of a 66-year-old woman, under follow-up for an invasive classic lobular carcinoma of the left breast treated four years prior, who was admitted for upper abdominal discomfort and worsening constipation. Linitis plastica was suspected at gastroscopy. Histology of gastric biopsies showed a poorly cohesive carcinoma comprising signet ring cells, with no resemblance to the original breast cancer. An adequate immunochemistry panel, in

Primary signet ring cell carcinoma of the cervix: About an uncommon case report.

BACKGROUND: Cervix mucinous adenocarcinomas have been defined by WHO classification into different subtypes: gastric, intestinal and ring signet cell. Ring signet cell subtype represent a diagnostic challenge due to the small number of cases described in the literature. We report hereby the 31st case worldwide, which is all the more exceptional as its atypical clinical presentation with mainly urological clinical signs represented a real diagnostic challenge. CASE PRESENTATION: We present the uncommon case of a multiparous, menopausal 68 years-old-woman, who presented in our department for pe

Breast metastasis of signet ring cell carcinoma from the colon: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Colon cancer is one of the most common diagnosed malignancies. Despite the use of surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, targeted therapy, immunotherapy, and other comprehensive treatments, distant metastasis is still one of the main causes for dying of colon cancer. The common metastatic site of colon cancer is the liver, lung, and bone. In this article, we report a rare case of breast metastasis of signet ring cell carcinoma from the colon. CASE PRESENTATION: A 44-year-old woman was diagnosed with colon cancer and received a radical surgery of colon cancer in 2019. Combined with p

Signet ring cell carcinoma hidden beneath large pedunculated colorectal polyp: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Large pedunculated colorectal polyps are not frequent among colonic polyps. We present a clinical case of a large pedunculated colorectal polyp with signet ring cell cancer infiltrating the submucosa and lymph node invasion in a patient who ultimately underwent additional surgery. Clinicians should attach importance to pedunculated colorectal polyps and choose the most appropriate therapy. CASE SUMMARY: A 52-year-old female farmer underwent routine screening colonoscopy and denied constipation, diarrhea, hematochezia, or other gastrointestinal symptoms. Her past medical history an

Signet-ring cell carcinoma of the gallbladder complicated by pulmonary tumor thrombotic microangiopathy.

Biliary drainage was performed in a 71-year-old man with obstructive jaundice of unknown origin; however, he died due to acute pulmonary failure. At autopsy, proliferation of adenocarcinoma cells was observed in the gallbladder mucosa transitioning from isolated signet-ring cell carcinoma (SRCC) to the subserosa and bile ducts without growth toward the gallbladder lumen. Furthermore, fibrocellular intimal proliferation, tumor emboli and organized thrombi were observed in the small pulmonary arteries. The final diagnosis was gallbladder carcinoma complicated by SRCC associated pulmonary tumor t

Primary signet ring cell mucinous ovarian carcinoma: a case report and literature review.

A 24-year-old female patient presented with an extremely rare primary signet cell carcinoma of the right ovary 1 year after surgery for a mucinous borderline tumour of the left ovary. Relaparotomy was carried out with right adnexectomy, appendectomy and partial omentectomy. Surgery was followed by 6 courses of paclitaxel/carboplatinum chemotherapy. After an initial response, the patient again developed increasing ascites. The patient was transferred to our hospital and a re-relaparotomy was carried out, completing the operation. After 3 courses of pegylated doxorubicin/trabectedin, the clinica

Primary cervical signet ring cell carcinoma: A rare case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Signet-ring cell carcinoma of the uterine cervix commonly occurs owing to metastasis. Today, the rarity of primary cervical origin is still making it a diagnostic challenge. This review aims to raise awareness to maintain early diagnosis and appropriate management. CASE PRESENTATION: A 37-year-old patient presented with postcoital vaginal bleeding with a history revealing a negative Papanicolaou smear 2 years prior. Pelvic examination revealed a cervical mass and the biopsy was interpreted as a signet ring cell pattern. Detailed extrapelvic evaluation was made to rule out a poss

Primary signet-ring cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder ‒ A rare bladder tumor.

AIM: Primary Signet Ring Cell Carcinoma (SRCC) of the bladder accounts for only 1%‒4% of all bladder malignancies. To date, few studies have been conducted to investigate the characteristics of SRCC. This study aimed to investigate the clinical features and treatments of SRCC and explore the independent risk factors of survival in SRCC patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted on 32 eligible patients. The survival rate was calculated with the Kaplan-Meier method, and the COX proportional hazards model was used to investigate the independent risk factors of prognosis.

Morphologic Heterogeneity of Carcinoma with Signet Ring Cell Features at Different Primary Sites.

INTRODUCTION: Signet ring cells (SRCs) may be observed in carcinomas from multiple primary sites. Elucidating unknown primaries from metastases with SRCs represents a diagnostic challenge. This study examined morphologic characteristics of adenocarcinomas with SRCs from stablished primary sites and described objective features, which can aid in identifying the site of origin. METHODS: The series encompasses 257 cases of adenocarcinomas with SRCs from gastroesophageal junction (GEJ, n = 38), stomach (n = 48), pancreatobiliary system (n = 16), colorectum (n = 40), appendix (n = 32), breast (n =

Primary signet-ring cell carcinoma of the extrahepatic bile duct: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Signet ring cell carcinoma (SRCC) is a specific type of mucinous secretory adenocarcinoma, which contains abundant mucus in the cytoplasm and pushes the nucleus to one side of the cell membrane, forming a round or oval, and the nuclear deviations give the cells a signet ring-like appearance. SRCC often originates in the gastrointestinal tract, especially in the stomach. However, primary SRCC of the extrahepatic bile duct is extremely rare. Therefore, little is known about its epidemiology, treatment, and prognosis. CASE SUMMARY: An 82-year-old female was admitted with abdominal pa

Clinical Characteristics and Prognostic Analysis of Patients With Signet Ring Cell Gastric Carcinoma.

We do not know the clinical and prognostic factors that influence the survival of patients with gastric signet ring cell carcinoma (SRC). Therefore, a retrospective review was undertaken of 219 patients with SRC who had undergone gastrectomy between January 2009 and December 2012 in our hospital. Patient age, sex, TNM stage, vessel carcinoma embolus, perineural invasion, tumor site and operation type, postoperative chemotherapy, and five-year overall survival were recorded and evaluated. In our study, 93 cases (42.5%) were signet ring cell carcinoma only, and 126 cases (57.5%) were signet ring

Diagnosis of colonic amebiasis and coexisting signet-ring cell carcinoma in intestinal biopsy.

Amebiasis is uncommon in developed countries. Several case reports in the literature emphasize that both the presenting symptoms and the radiological findings of colonic amebiasis closely resemble more common conditions, such as idiopathic inflammatory bowel disease and gastro-intestinal malignancy. We describe a unique case of colonic amebiasis (amebomas) coexisting with signet-ring cell carcinoma of the ileocecal valve, the cecum and the appendix. Endoscopically, the ulcerated tumor was indistinguishable from the ulcerations and pseudotumors (amebomas) detected in the ascending colon. Histol

Descending colo-colonic intussusception secondary to signet ring cell carcinoma: A case report.

The incidence of intussusception is low in adults, particularly in the descending colon, due to the anatomical attachment of the descending colon to the retroperitoneum. Signet ring cell histology represents ~1% of colon adenocarcinomas and is associated with young patients and a poor clinical outcome. The present study describes a case of descending colo-colonic intussusception caused by signet ring cell carcinoma in a 27-year-old male. The patient presented with a history of intermittent left upper-quadrant abdominal pain for more than six months without any evident etiology. A computed tomo
