BACKGROUND: Contributing factors to cardiac tamponade after contemporary thermal ablation remain poorly defined, especially in relation to ablation strategies. We aimed to clarify the incidence and identify the risk factors associated with cardiac tamponade following thermal atrial fibrillation (AF) ablation.
METHODS: Data from consecutive AF ablation procedures at 20 cardiovascular centers between 2022 and 2024 were analyzed.
RESULTS: Among 12 820 AF ablation procedures (mean age 68 ± 11 years; 8877 men; 6,963 paroxysmal AF; 9824 index procedures), radiofrequency and cryoballoon ablation we

BACKGROUND: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a common arrhythmia among patients with cardiac amyloidosis. Whereas the success rate of catheter ablation for AF may be lower due to amyloid deposition, the optimal approach to achieving rhythm control in these patients remains controversial.
OBJECTIVES: This study aims to assess the 3-year outcomes of catheter ablation for AF vs antiarrhythmic drug (AAD) therapy among patients with AF and cardiac amyloidosis using a multinational data set.
METHODS: Using the TriNetX Analytics Research Network, we included patients aged ≥18 years with a diagnosis of A

BACKGROUND: The persistently high mortality rate following cardiac arrest over the past decades underscores the urgent need for advancements in resuscitation strategies. Animal studies have shown increased coronary and cerebral perfusion during cardiopulmonary resuscitation following endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta.
METHODS: This single-arm study investigated the feasibility and safety of a novel computer-aided automated aortic occlusion catheter (NEURESCUE® Catheter & NEURESCUE® Assistant) as an adjunct to advanced cardiac life support in patients with non-traumatic cardiac arres

Central venous catheter (CVC) placement is a common medical intervention in hospitalized patients associated with a host of complications, including cardiac tamponade. Here, we describe a case of a 61-year-old male with end-stage renal disease on hemodialysis via a right internal jugular tunneled dialysis catheter who presented to the emergency room for hypoxia at his skilled nursing facility. He had been discharged three days prior for treatment of a Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) neck abscess, during which an uncomplicated right internal jugular tunneled dialysis catheter

BACKGROUND: Atrial arrhythmias (AA) commonly affect patients with cardiac amyloidosis (CA) and are a contributing risk factor for the development of heart failure (HF). This study sought to investigate the long-term efficacy and impact of catheter ablation on HF progression in patients with CA and AA.
METHODS: Thirty-one patients with CA and AA undergoing catheter ablation were retrospectively included (transthyretin-ATTR CA 61% and light chain-AL CA 39%). AA subtypes included atrial fibrillation (AFib) in 22 (paroxysmal in 10 and persistent in 12), atrial flutter (AFl) in 17 and atrial tachy

Cardiac tamponade is the fluid accumulation within the pericardial sac that compresses the heart and decreases cardiac output. More than 20% of the cases are surgical or non-surgical iatrogenic causes. Cardiac tamponade has been described as a rare complication of central venous catheter placement with an incidence in adults as low as less than 1% but with significantly high mortality of more than 60%. The purpose of this article is to review the incidence, clinical manifestations, pathophysiology, diagnosis, and management of cardiac tamponade after central venous catheter placement as well a

INTRODUCTION: Cavo-tricuspid isthmus (CTI) dependent atrial flutter (AFL) is one of the most common atrial arrhythmias involving the right atrium (RA) for which radiofrequency catheter ablation has been widely used as a therapy of choice. However, there is limited data on the effect of this intervention on cardiac size and function.
METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted on 468 patients who underwent ablation for CTI dependent typical AFL at a single institution between 2010 and 2019. After excluding patients with congenital or rheumatic heart disease, heart transplant recipients, or th

BACKGROUND: Tunnelled haemodialysis catheters are commonly used to perform haemodialysis. Rare complications of these catheters include perforations of major blood vessels or the heart. Albeit rare, these complications can lead to significant morbidity and mortality.
CASE SUMMARY: We present a case of late migration of a tunnelled haemodialysis catheter causing a right atrial perforation with subsequent pericardial tamponade, haemodynamic shock, and cardiac arrest. A 51-year-old female patient with end-stage renal disease presented with hypotension and lactate acidosis, indicating circulatory

Umbilical venous catheter (UVC) is widely used in neonatal intensive care units. Pericardial effusion is an uncommon but life-threatening complication; and tamponade have been reported in 3% of neonates having such catheters. We present a case of cardiac tamponade as a complication of venous catheter in a neonate. The patient was diagnosed at the appropriate time by echocardiography and the pericardiocentesis was performed, and after removal of the complete pericardial effusion,an improvement of the critical condition was achieved. It is important to document the optimal positioning of UVC bef

BACKGROUND: Bezold-Jarisch reflex (BJR) plays an important role in the pathophysiology of several cardiovascular disorders. Radiofrequency catheter ablation (RFCA) of the vagal ganglia in cardiac fat pads (FPs) may attenuate BJR. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of RFCA of the cardiac FPs on veratridine-induced BJR in dogs.
METHODS AND RESULTS: This study was performed in 30 pentobarbital-anesthetized and open-chest dogs: control group received no ablation (n = 15); and ablation group (n = 15) received epicardial ablation of the 3 FPs located near the right pulmonary vein,

Totally implantable venous device (TIVD) are widely used for the treatment of patients requiring long-term chemotherapy, total parenteral nutrition and fluid replacement. Until today, many kinds of complications have been reported in the literature. We report an unusual case of catheter fracture as a consequence of pinchoff syndrome, and discuss the potential methods to avoid this complication and its evolution.

Rhabdomyomas may be the underlying cause of accessory pathways in patients with tuberous sclerosis, leading to symptomatic supraventricular tachycardia that does not respond to antiarrhythmic drugs. We report an infant with tuberous sclerosis and cardiac rhabdomyomas who underwent successful radiofrequency catheter ablation of a left free wall accessory pathway and we describe the clinical features, ablation findings and long-term follow-up.

Catheter ablation is a curative intervention for the treatment of supraventricular, but also ventricular, tachycardias that has proved both safe and effective. In patients with supraventricular tachycardias in underlying WPW syndrome or nodal tachycardia and appreciable symptoms, catheter ablation can be considered the treatment of choice. But many patients with monomorphic ventricular extrasystole that is difficult to control medically experience considerable subjective impairment in their daily life. It is possible that in such patients, too, catheter ablation may, sometime in the future, be

Following successful RF ablation of the atrioventricular node (AVN), temporary pacing is necessary prior to insertion of a permanent pacemaker. The risks and inconvenience of temporary pacing could be avoided if a permanent pacemaker is already in place. This study reports the feasibility of RF ablation of the AVN in 27 patients (age 55 +/- 17 years, 15 males) with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and pacemakers. Indications for AVN ablation were drug refractory atrial fibrillation in 24 patients, and rapid AVN conduction preventing septal pre-excitation by DDD pacemaker, inserted for relief of lef

Since its introduction in 1985, there have been numerous reports of the use of radio-frequency (RF) current as an alternative energy source for catheter ablation. RF current (frequency range 150 kHz to 1 MHz), when delivered in bipolar mode, causes desiccation of tissue by creating a localized area of heat that results in discrete coagulation necrosis. An equivalent energy source such as direct current (DC) shock can be delivered at lower power (5 to 30 W) and lower voltage (30 to 80 V) for a longer pulse duration (10 to 60 seconds), thus eliminating barotraumatic effects. Because of its high

The present case report describes a case of intrapleural infusion by means of a subclavian catheter. The clinical situation together with the signs of posteroinferior infarction in ECG led to a wrong diagnosis. During an emergency oepration the intrapleural infusion caused cardiac arrest which could be mastered by successful reanimation. After drainage of the intrapleural infusion the patient recovers without further complications. Prior to every infusion subclavicular catheters should be tested by blood aspiration.
