Cardiologists' perceptions on multidisciplinary collaboration in heart failure care - a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Cardiologists play a key role in multidisciplinary care by guiding heart failure (HF) management in the hospital and in the community. Regional implementation of multidisciplinary health care interventions depends on how they perceive collaboration with other health care disciplines, yet research on this topic is limited. This study aimed to explore the views and opinions of cardiologists on multidisciplinary collaboration in HF care. METHODS: We conducted a qualitative study based on face-to-face semi-structured interviews with 11 Belgian cardiologists between September 2019 and

Fabry disease-what cardiologists can learn from the nephrologist: a narrative review.

Fabry disease (FD) is a rare, X-linked lysosomal storage disorder resulting in decreased or absent activity of the lysosomal enzyme alpha-galactosidase A. Subsequent accumulation of storage material can occur in virtually all cells of the body. Organs and structures affected by storage material deposition include the heart, the kidney, the central and peripheral nervous system and the cornea of the eyes. Progressive cardiac hypertrophy, arrhythmias, cardiac fibrosis, heart failure and cardiac death are common characteristics of cardiac involvement. Renal depositions of glycosphingolipids are a

Management of CAD in Patients with Active Cancer: the Interventional Cardiologists' Perspective.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Coronary artery disease in patients with active cancer presents particular challenges for clinicians, as optimum management is required in order to treat the underlying malignancy and to reduce morbidity and mortality associated with cardiovascular diseases. Special considerations must be made in respect to either primary or secondary thrombocytopenia, the presence of coagulopathies and the propensity of bleeding, vascular access complications, and increased risk of stent thrombosis. RECENT FINDINGS: In presence of acute coronary symptoms, the cardio-oncology team has to ma

Sex proportion of offspring and exposure to radiation in male invasive cardiologists.

High radiation exposure among male radiologists has been reported to result in a significantly higher proportion of female offspring. This study examined whether work-related radiation exposure was associated with a higher propensity for female offspring among male interventional cardiologists. On behalf of the interventional committee of the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions, an Internet-based questionnaire was sent to the society's 2063 members. The 402 male respondents had a total of 518 biological offspring; 48.6% of them were female. Among the 172 high-volume male d

Marfan syndrome: what internists and pediatric or adult cardiologists need to know.

Marfan syndrome (MFS) is one of the most frequent connective tissue disorders, showing striking pleiotropism and clinical variability. There is autosomal dominant inheritance with complete penetrance but variable expression. Approximately 25% of MFS patients have no family history of the syndrome and represent sporadic cases due to new mutations. This hazardous condition is often associated with premature cardiovascular death unless surveillance and management are optimized. The fibrillin gene (FBN1) encodes the structure of the connective tissue protein fibrillin. MFS is caused by mutations i

Cardiac management by pediatricians versus pediatric cardiologists in an inpatient academic center.

BACKGROUND: Limited resources, managed care, and advances in technology have led to the suggestion that physicians other than cardiologists be further empowered to perform the initial cardiac evaluation in children with suspected heart disease. To study this strategy, we compared the management decisions of pediatricians with the recommendations of pediatric cardiologists who reviewed the records of the same patients. METHODS: Sixty-nine patients aged <23 years with suspected heart disease were referred by pediatricians (n = 40) on the inpatient service at Boston Medical Center for either a c

[Why do cardiologists disregard sexual health of their patients? A critical review].

Sexual activity is an essential aspect of normal human function, well-being and quality of life. Sexual dysfunction is a common problem of increasing incidence in patients with cardiovascular disease, particularly younger and male, and continues over time in life, but these issues are not often discussed in daily practice both for a limited patient-physician relationship and clinicians' poor knowledge. Many studies suggest that the majority of patients and their partners have questions or concerns about their sexual health. Healthcare providers can help their patients if they are aware of the

Importance of basic science and research training for the future generation of cardiologists.

Advances in the battle against cardiovascular diseases depend upon continuously translating emerging scientific knowledge from preclinical studies and clinical trials into innovative and effective therapeutic strategies. Over the past three decades, molecular and cellular biology have undergone a profound transformation, and large-scale, single-cell, and multi-omics studies have enabled investigations on cardiac disease mechanisms with unprecedented precision. However, these rapid advancements have also contributed to a divergence between the needs and aspirations of basic researchers and thos

Lactate in Shock: Pathophysiology, Prognostic Value, and Resuscitation Strategy for the Cardiologist.

Lactate is a biochemical marker of shock and now occupies a central position in the diagnostic definitions, severity classifications, and prognostic risk stratification systems used in every form of circulatory failure encountered by the cardiologist. The Third International Consensus Definitions for Sepsis and Septic Shock (Sepsis-3) incorporated lactate greater than 2 mmol/L into the definition of septic shock, and the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions shock classification uses lactate to anchor its hypoperfusion criteria across stages B through E. [Ten questions about the athlete's heart: a guide for the clinical cardiologist].

The athlete's heart is a complex physiological adaptation to sustained physical training, necessitating a specialized approach to diagnosis and management. Advanced cardiac imaging plays a pivotal role in differentiating physiological remodeling from pathological conditions such as cardiomyopathies. In particular, cardiac magnetic resonance is essential for detecting subclinical myocardial fibrosis and other structural abnormalities that may indicate underlying disease. Serial imaging during follow-up is valuable for monitoring the progression or regression of cardiac remodeling, especially du

Fetal Supraventricular Tachycardia: What the Adult Cardiologist Needs to Know.

Fetal supraventricular tachycardia management is challenging, with consequences for both the fetus and the mother. If left untreated, fetal hydrops may ensue, at which point delivery and treatment of the arrhythmia is preferred. However, if the fetus is not at term nor near-term, significant doses of antiarrhythmics may be needed to achieve adequate transplacental bioavailability. Although digoxin has classically been the mainstay of treatment, the use of flecainide or sotalol as monotherapy or in combination with digoxin is being studied. Interdisciplinary team management and shared decision-
