A case of atrial septal defect in association with dilated cardiomyopathy is presented. Evolutive features are mainly assessed by echocardiography. On initial presentation the findings on physical examination pointed to the diagnosis of atrial septal defect with severe congestive heart failure. In addition to the demonstration of the congenital heart disease, echocardiography showed very dilated right atrial and ventricular cavities and later appearance of right atrium intracavitary thrombi. Left cavities were initially normal but, after surgical repair of the atrial septal defect, they rapidl

In this prospective study the nutritional profiles of 21 consecutive male hospital in-patients with primary dilated cardiomyopathy were evaluated in order to determine whether these profiles differed from those foodstuff consumed during on week and recording of the daily consumption of alcoholic beverages during the year preceding hospitalisation. The duration of dangerous alcohol consumption (more than 60 g/day) was also recorded. In these 21 patients the mean calorie intake was 3,600 kcal/day, including 500 kcal/day provided by alcohol. The mean nutrient intakes were: proteins 90 g/day, fats

Twenty-five patients with idiopathic dilated cardiomiopathy were investigated in order to evaluate the role of late ventricular potentials as possible markers of ventricular tachycardia or sudden cardiac death. Holter monitoring showed ventricular tachycardia in 9 patients (group A) all of whom had late ventricular potentials, (mean +/- SD length 37.22 +/- 15.83 ms and mean +/- SD voltage 5.62 +/- 2.78 microV). Mean +/- SD ejection fraction in this group was 20 +/- 9.39%. In 16 patients (group B), without ventricular tachycardia, means +/- SD ejection fraction 27.5 +/- 8.17%; late ventricular

Abnormal aortic elasticity serves as a marker for cardiovascular mortality and has a negative impact on the left ventricular (LV) afterload. Noncompaction cardiomyopathy (NCCM) is characterized by hypertrabeculation of the LV endomyocardial wall, with an underdeveloped endocardial helix. This may result in absence of LV twist, disturbed aortic elasticity, LV dysfunction, and ultimately premature heart failure (HF). This study compared the aortic stiffness and clinical outcome in patients with NCCM to that of a control group with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). Sixty NCCM patients, matched by age

Among women with idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy (IDC), the percent who develop heart failure (HF) in the peripartum period (during pregnancy or within 6 months of parturition) compared with those women who develop HF outside the peripartum period is unclear. We studied 72 women with IDC who underwent orthotopic heart transplantation for severe HF, the onset of which was in the peripartum period in 8 (11%) and outside the period in 64 (89%). Comparison of many clinical and morphologic variables between these 2 groups showed significant differences only in the ages of onset of HF, age when or

BACKGROUND: The histologic difference between alcoholic cardiomyopathy (ACM) and idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy (IDCM) is unclear. The present study aimed to identify the quantitative pathologic features of ACM compared with IDCM.
METHODS: Specimens from 6 regions (anterior left ventricle [LV], lateral LV, inferior LV, interventricular septum [IVS], anterior right ventricle [RV], and inferior RV) were sampled from each explanted heart. Specimens from 4 healthy donor hearts were obtained as normal control. Tissues were sectioned and Masson trichrome stained. Histomorphometry was performed t

Background Inherited cardiomyopathies display variable penetrance and expression, and a component of phenotypic variation is genetically determined. To evaluate the genetic contribution to this variable expression, we compared protein coding variation in the genomes of those with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) and dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). Methods and Results Nonsynonymous single-nucleotide variants (nsSNVs) were ascertained using whole genome sequencing from familial cases of HCM (n=56) or DCM (n=70) and correlated with echocardiographic information. Focusing on nsSNVs in 102 genes lin

In this study the histopathologic features of Chagas' disease and idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy were compared in 38 patients with congestive heart failure, classes II or III. Biopsy specimens were obtained with the Stanford model needle for right ventricle. Twenty-two patients presented non-chagasic dilated cardiomyopathy, and 16 were carriers of Chagas' disease. Twenty-three were male and 15 were female; their ages varied 18 and 49 years (mean 35.5). Fibrosis was slightly more frequently and intense in Chagas' disease than in dilated cardiomyopathy. Myocarditis aspect also was more freque

AIMS: The aims of this paper were to investigate the analytical performance of the nine prognostic scales commonly used in heart failure (HF), in patients with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), and to develop a unique prognostic model tailored to DCM patients.
METHODS AND RESULTS: The hospital and outpatient records of 406 DCM patients were retrospectively analysed. The information on patient status was gathered after 48.2 ± 32.0 months. Tests were carried out to ascertain the prognostic accuracy in DCM using some of the most frequently applied HF prognostic scales (Barcelona Bio-Heart Failure, C

Heart failure is an enormously important clinical problem that, if not faced, may overwhelm health care resources. Primary and secondary cardiomyopathies cause the majority of cases of clinical heart failure, which is thus better approached from the utility point of view of myocardial failure. Furthermore, the risk of thromboembolic complications presenting in such disease may be higher than in ischemic cardiomyopathy. Intracardiac thrombi and mural endocardial plaques (from the organization of thrombi) are present at necropsy in more than 50% of patients with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). Sev

Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) and ischemic cardiomyopathy (ICM) are common causes of heart failure (HF). Though they share similar clinical characteristics, their differential effects on cardiovascular metabolomics have yet to be elucidated. In this study, we applied a comprehensive metabolomics platform to plasma samples of HF patients with different etiology (38 patients with DCM and 18 patients with ICM) and 20 healthy controls. Significant differences in metabolomics profiling were shown among two cardiomyopathy groups and healthy controls. Two hundred thirty three dysregulated metabolites

Previous research has focused on revealing the functions of each individual gene and/or pathway in idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) or ischemic cardiomyopathy (IC). However, the common or specific pathways of the initiation and processes of DCM and IC are still unclear. Here, we attempted to uncover the critical genes and potential molecular networks that play important roles in DCM and IC progression commonly or specifically. The transcriptional profiles from normal and DCM or IC patient samples were analyzed and compared using bioinformatic methods. Initially, the normal and DCM or IC

BACKGROUND: Mutations in FKTN encoding for fukutin cause Fukuyama-type congenital muscular dystrophy characterized by severe muscle wasting and hypotonia with mental retardation. Fukuyama-type congenital muscular dystrophy is a recessive genetic trait. FKTN mutations in patients with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) have been investigated by our research group. The patients showed hyper-CKemia with mild or no muscle weakness and without mental retardation, suggesting that the clinical spectrum of FKTN mutations are wider than previously thought. The current study was designed to further explore th

Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a severe condition, characterised by left ventricular dilation and systolic dysfunction, necessitating heart transplantation when all other treatment options fail. This case report describes a 2-year-old girl initially presenting with oedema, listlessness, and severe iron deficiency anaemia. She was diagnosed with DCM. Extensive diagnostic workup ruled out other causes, leading to the suspicion of DCM due to alimentary iron deficiency. This was confirmed by the parents' report that the girl was fed almost exclusively with low-fat cow's milk. Prompt treatment, in

We report the case of a 6-year-old boy presenting to the emergency department after a syncopal event during a flu-like illness. Intermittent ventricular tachycardia was noted during Emergency Medical Services transport, and a focused cardiac ultrasound (FOCUS) in the emergency department revealed a dilated left ventricle and left atrium as well as severe global systolic dysfunction. Point-of-care ultrasound findings prompted expedited evaluation and management of this critically ill patient.

Mid-aortic syndrome (MAS) is a rare vascular disease that usually leads to renovascular hypertension. With the predominant manifestations being intractable arterial hypertension and lower extremity arterial insufficiency, it has rarely been associated with dilated cardiomyopathy. We report a young girl with congestive heart failure, where the cause was initially attributed to dilated cardiomyopathy. A repeated echocardiogram 6 months later brought the physician's suspicion of MAS because of the abnormal colour of Doppler from the subcostal view. Further assessment using CT angiography revealed
