The Association and Predictive Ability of ECG Abnormalities with Cardiovascular Diseases: A Prospective Analysis.

AIMS: To examine whether electrocardiography (ECG) could provide additional values to the traditional risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk prediction among different cardiovascular risk subgroups. METHODS: A total of 7,872 community residents aged ≥40 years were followed up for a median of 4.5 years. A 12-lead resting ECG was examined for participants at baseline. CVD events including myocardial infarction, stroke and cardiovascular mortality were collected. Cox proportional hazards models were used and models of traditional risk factors with and without ECG were compared. RESU

Abnormal body composition, cardiovascular endurance, and muscle strength in pediatric SLE.

BACKGROUND: Children with SLE are known to have higher fat mass compared to their peers but there are no published data regarding exercise capacity as measured by cardiovascular endurance and muscle strength. In our pilot study of ten children with SLE, we sought to examine body composition, cardiovascular endurance, and isometric muscle strength. FINDINGS: Ten pediatric SLE patients were studied with a mean age of 15.5 years and 90 % female. Percent body fat above 30 %, the recommended normal level in adolescent females, were found in 89 % of female subjects and 40 % of all participants had

Coronary flow reserve as an index of cardiac function in mice with cardiovascular abnormalities.

Mice are now commonly used as models of human cardiovascular diseases and conditions, but it is challenging to measure blood flow velocity in small vessels such as coronary arteries. Accordingly, we have developed a method using a 2 mm diameter 20 MHz pulsed Doppler probe applied to the chest of anesthetized mice to measure left main coronary blood flow velocity noninvasively. We also found that coronary flow velocity could be increased from baseline (B) to hyperemic (H) levels by changing the concentration of isoflurane gas anesthesia from 1% to 2.5% in oxygen. We used the ratio B/H to estima

Diabetic autonomic neuropathy: abnormal cardiovascular reactions under general anesthesia.

The influence of diabetic autonomic neuropathy upon the behavior of the circulatory system was investigated in 56 patients who had undergone ophthalmological surgery. A standardized test combination (variability in heart rate during deep breathing. Valsalva ratio, 30:15 ratio, change in blood pressure from lying to standing, sustained handgrip test) was used to study the patients' cardiovascular reflectory reactions. The patients were then divided into the following groups: Group I, non-diabetics. Group II, diabetics without autonomic neuropathy. Group III, diabetics with autonomic neuropathy.

Prevalence of associated cardiovascular abnormalities in 500 patients with aortic coarctation referred for cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging to a tertiary center.

Coarctation of the aorta (CoA) is a common congenital defect whose overall incidence is 5-8% of all congenital cardiac anomalies. Associated cardiac anomalies have been well described in previous studies examining specific subgroups of CoA patients, particularly infants and necropsy specimens. The majority of studies, conducted from the 1970s to 1980s, excluded older children, adolescents, and adults. Given the advent of improved surgical and interventional techniques, many CoA patients are surviving into adulthood. This study examined a population of 500 CoA patients in the authors' cardiovas

Association of T-wave abnormalities with major cardiovascular events in diabetes: the ACCORD trial.

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: T-wave abnormalities (TWA) are often found on ECG and signify abnormal ventricular repolarisation. While TWA have been shown to be associated with subclinical atherosclerosis, the relationship between TWA and hard cardiovascular endpoints is less clear and may differ in the presence of diabetes, so we sought to explore these associations in participants from the Action to Control Cardiovascular Risk in Diabetes (ACCORD) trial. METHODS: TWA were operationally defined as the presence of any Minnesota Codes 5-1 through 5-4 in any lead distribution. Multivariable Cox proportional

Minimally invasive per-catheter occlusion and dilation procedures for congenital cardiovascular abnormalities in dogs.

With ever-increasing sophistication of veterinary cardiology, minimally invasive per-catheter occlusion and dilation procedures for the treatment of various congenital cardiovascular abnormalities in dogs have become not only available, but mainstream. Much new information about minimally invasive per-catheter patent ductus arteriosus occlusion has been published and presented during the past few years. Consequently, patent ductus arteriosus occlusion is the primary focus of this article. Occlusion of other less common congenital cardiac defects is also briefly reviewed. Balloon dilation of pu

HIV and antiretroviral therapy: lipid abnormalities and associated cardiovascular risk in HIV-infected patients.

It has been demonstrated that patients on highly active antiretroviral therapy are at increased risk for developing metabolic abnormalities that include elevated levels of serum triglycerides and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and reduced levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. This dyslipidemia is similar to that seen in the metabolic syndrome, raising the concern that highly active antiretroviral therapy also potentially increases the risk for cardiovascular complications. This paper reviews the contribution of both HIV infection and the different components of highly active ant

Abnormalities of cardiovascular neural control and reduced orthostatic tolerance in patients with primary fibromyalgia.

OBJECTIVE: Fibromyalgia (FM) is a syndrome characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain. Symptoms of orthostatic intolerance may also be present, suggesting underlying abnormalities of cardiovascular neural regulation. We tested the hypothesis that FM is characterized by sympathetic overactivity and alterations in cardiovascular autonomic response to gravitational stimulus. METHODS: Sixteen patients with primary FM and 16 healthy controls underwent electrocardiography examination, finger blood pressure, respiration, and muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) recordings at rest and durin

Retinal microvascular abnormalities and 10-year cardiovascular mortality: a population-based case-control study.

PURPOSE: Retinal microvascular abnormalities reflect persistent arteriolar damage from hypertension and independently predict stroke. We examined their associations with long-term cardiovascular mortality. DESIGN: Population-based, nested, case-control study. POPULATION: Cases were Beaver Dam Eye Study participants (age range, 43-84 years) who died of coronary heart disease or stroke between the baseline examination in 1988 to 1990 and 1999 (n = 413). Nearly 3 controls per case were selected from the baseline cohort, frequency-matched on 5-year age intervals and gender (n = 1198). METHODS:

Application of noninvasive prenatal testing-plus in fetal ultrasound cardiovascular abnormalities: An observational study.

Congenital heart disease (CHD), the most common birth defect in China with high neonatal mortality, is frequently associated with chromosomal abnormalities including copy number variations (CNVs), yet conventional ultrasound screening has limitations in detecting these genetic underpinnings; noninvasive prenatal testing plus (NIPT Plus) may address this gap, but its clinical efficacy in diagnosing fetal CHD remains unclear. To explore the clinical efficacy of NIPT Plus in the diagnosis of fetal CHD. Pregnant women whose fetuses were identified with congenital structural heart defects or abnorm

Growth patterns and cardiovascular abnormalities in small for gestational age fetuses: 1. Pattern characteristics.

BACKGROUND: Fetal growth restriction is being defined as either "early" or "late" depending on age of onset. A recent investigation using individualized assessment has identified five different growth restriction patterns. No previous study has related these patterns to cardiovascular abnormalities. OBJECTIVES: To determine growth patterns in small fetuses (BW < 10th percentile) using Individualized Growth Assessment (IGA) and to relate cardiovascular abnormalities found with Doppler ultrasound to these patterns. STUDY DESIGN: A secondary analysis was carried out in 126 fetuses from the PORT

Squatting test: A posture to study and counteract cardiovascular abnormalities associated with autonomic dysfunction.

The squatting test is an active posture manoeuvre that imposes one of the most potent orthostatic stresses. In normal subjects, the changes in blood pressure and heart rate are transient because of appropriate baroreflex homeostasis and do not provoke symptoms. However, in various pathological conditions, both the increase in blood pressure during squatting and the decrease in blood pressure during standing may be more important and sustained, potentially leading to complaints and adverse events. Squatting has been used to evaluate patients with tetralogy of Fallot, heart transplant, dysautono
