History taking and physical examination of patients who present with cardiac pain are not generally regarded as part of an emergency nurse's role in the UK. However, a good knowledge of the anatomy of the heart and cardiac disease, and the ability to undertake effective cardiovascular examination, could enable nurses to highlight adverse findings earlier in a patient's journey and improve patient outcomes. This article reviews the anatomy of the heart and cardiovascular disease, and describes how to pick out the subjective and objective information from patient histories and cardiac examinatio

Introduction: we aimed to assess the effect of nutritional nursing intervention on patients with acute ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) accompanied by iron deficiency. Methods: this study comprised a prospective observational cohort phase and a nested randomized controlled trial (RCT) phase. In the prospective study phase, 200 patients with a first acute STEMI were consecutively enrolled, of whom 92 were subsequently diagnosed with iron deficiency. In the RCT phase, 90 patients were randomly assigned to conventional nursing, medical-therapy, or nursing intervention group for

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of mortality in Spain, yet there is no systematic population-based cardiovascular screening program. This study evaluated the feasibility of a nurse-led, single-visit cardiovascular screening program in primary care (PreveCardio), and identified the prevalence of modifiable cardiovascular risk factors, their associated socioeconomic factors, and the translation of pilot findings into regional health policy.
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study across 42 primary care centers in a Spanish region (January-March 2

Inherited cardiac conditions (ICCs) encompass a range of rare genetic heart diseases and require the expert care of a skilled multidisciplinary team. Increased awareness of these conditions and advances in genetic testing have led to a rise in demand for specialist ICC services. The Centre for Inherited Cardiovascular Diseases at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London, England, is a tertiary centre for the diagnosis and management of ICCs in children and young people. Specialist nursing roles have developed at the centre in recent years in parallel with the growth of ICC nursing. There are als

BACKGROUND: Polysomnography (PSG) is the gold standard for diagnosing Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS); however, monitoring failure and patient discomfort can compromise diagnostic accuracy. This study evaluated whether comprehensive nursing interventions improved PSG monitoring success, clinical parameters, and patient outcomes.
METHODS: This prospective observational cohort study included 100 patients with OSAS who underwent PSG. Participants were sequentially allocated to a control group (n=50) receiving standard care or an observation group (n=50) receiving comprehensive nursing in

Cardiovascular disease complicating pregnancy is rising in prevalence secondary to advanced maternal age, cardiovascular risk factors, and the successful management of congenital heart disease conditions. The physiological changes of pregnancy may alter drug properties affecting both mother and fetus. Familiarity with both physiological and pharmacological attributes is key for the successful management of pregnant women with cardiac disease. This review summarizes the published data, available guidelines, and recommendations for use of cardiovascular medications during pregnancy. Care of the

Type A behavior has been shown in adults to be a predictor of heart disease equal in magnitude to cigarette smoking and cholesterol level. This article reviews current thinking on Type A behavior and its relationship to cardiovascular health. Particular emphasis is given to current literature about Type A behavior in adolescents, school-aged children, and preschoolers. Discussion covers the importance of the primary subcomponents of Type A behavior (i.e., competitiveness, hostility, and impatience). Clinical cautions and applications of this research are included.

INTRODUCTION: Arterial hypertension is among the most important risk factors of atherosclerosis and associated cardiovascular pathology with a prevalence rate estimated at 20-30% of the adult population. Nowadays, it is recommended to perform an individual assessment of cardiovascular risk in a patient and to determine the threshold value for arterial hypertension, even though blood pressure classification values according to the European Society of Hypertension and the European Society of Cardiology (ESH/ESC), as well as the Polish Society of Hypertension (PTNT) have remained unchanged.

The objective of this clinical paper is to enhance nurses' understanding of normal swallowing physiology and post-operative swallowing impairments (dysphagia) in patients following cardiovascular surgery. Ultimately, the goals of dysphagia assessment and management are to prevent pulmonary complications secondary to aspiration and to ensure safe and adequate nutritional intake and hydration. Risk factors for dysphagia include stroke, compromised respiratory status, endotracheal intubation and/or tracheostomy tubes, and a dependency for feeding and oral care. Other patient characteristics assoc

AimTo evaluate the association between nursing diagnoses, in-hospital mortality and length of stay in adults hospitalized with decompensated heart failure.MethodsA prospective longitudinal study conducted between April 2018 and July 2019. Data were collected from medical records of patients admitted to the emergency department of a large cardiovascular teaching hospital. Sociodemographic and clinical variables, along with nursing diagnoses based on NANDA-I classification, were extracted. Cox proportional hazards regression identified factors associated with mortality, while generalized linear

BACKGROUND: With ageing, older people face cardiovascular problems as the major cause of disability and death. Although immediate medical attention is a major factor in determining outcomes of cardiac problems, lack of personnel (i.e. registered nurse, certified nursing assistant and home care aide) in nursing homes without residing doctor limits the awareness of such problems, thus making it difficult to initiate timely and appropriate intervention.
AIM: The aim of this study was to conceptualize critical care for nursing home residents with cardiac vulnerability and develop practical knowle

OBJECTIVES: To examine and summarize current international guidelines regarding cardiovascular risk reduction before and during cancer therapy, and to discuss the emerging role of cardio-oncology as a subspecialty in cancer care and the role of cardio-oncology rehabilitation.
DATA SOURCES: Published articles and guidelines.
CONCLUSION: With improvements in cancer detection and the use of novel adjuvant therapies, an increasing number of individuals now survive a cancer diagnosis. However, for some the cost is high - many survivors are now at higher risk of death from cardiovascular disease t

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases are significant global health challenges and leading causes of death worldwide. Although there is substantial evidence supporting the positive effects of statins for both primary and secondary prevention of these diseases, evidence is lacking regarding the benefits in people with dementia. This study investigated the associations between statin use and cardiovascular and cerebrovascular hospitalizations in nursing home residents with and without dementia.
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study of nursing home residents with and without

Cardiovascular diseases are a major cause of death worldwide, and coronary heart disease (CHD) is a prevalent cardiovascular condition and a significant health burden for the population. In this disease, insufficient blood flow to the heart due to plaque accumulation in the coronary arteries causes chest pain, heart attack, and even death. So, it is vital to identify risk factors, prevention, appropriate treatment, and rehabilitation. Nurses play an indispensable role in managing and caring for patients with CHD. Indeed, they possess a deep understanding of the disease and its complexities, en

The implications of genetics and genomics for critical care nurses are becoming more evident, not only in the care provided but also in the numerous medications administered. Genetic causes are being discovered for an increasing number of chronic illnesses and diseases, such as Huntington disease. Because of the scientific and pharmacological advances, leading nursing organizations, such as the American Nurses Association, have established competencies in genetic knowledge for nurses. Such competencies help ensure quality care. Recent advances in the pharmacogenomics of therapy for human immun

Taiwan is facing a rapid change in the composition of its population. As the population ages, a greater demand for long-term care services and, in particular, nursing homes is expected. Before deciding who really needs nursing home care, it is important for policy makers to understand the current pattern of utilisation and what factors are associated with entry. This research assesses the relative importance of predisposing, enabling and need factors that lie behind this. It is based on a survey of elderly people in registered nursing homes, a comparison with a national sample of elderly peopl
