The Health, Aging, and Body Composition (Health ABC) Study-Ground-Breaking Science for 25 Years and Counting.

BACKGROUND: The Health, Aging, and Body Composition Study is a longitudinal cohort study that started just over 25 years ago. This ground-breaking study tested specific hypotheses about the importance of weight, body composition, and weight-related health conditions for incident functional limitation in older adults. METHODS: Narrative review with analysis of ancillary studies, career awards, publications, and citations. RESULTS: Key findings of the study demonstrated the importance of body composition as a whole, both fat and lean mass, in the disablement pathway. The quality of the muscle

Post-enrollment academic support and perceived learning effectiveness among international students in Chinese universities.

INTRODUCTION: As international student mobility expands beyond traditional Anglophone destinations, universities increasingly need to understand how perceived academic support relates to students' participation, adaptation, confidence, and learning effectiveness after enrollment. Less attention has been given to the relationship between academic support conditions and perceived learning effectiveness in non-Anglophone higher education contexts. METHODS: This study tested an educational psychology framework linking selected background characteristics, perceived academic support conditions, and

Racialised Conditional Capital Conversion: Race, Class and the Limits of Recognition in Elite Organisations.

This paper examines how racial inequality persists within organisations alongside career advancement among racialised professionals. Drawing on in-depth interviews with fifty Chinese professionals in Australia's Big Four firms, we examine how race shapes the recognition and conversion of economic, cultural and social capital in White-dominant organisations. Participants possessed substantial resources that enabled entry, mobility and strategic action, yet those resources did not convert on equivalent terms. Their capital could be dismissed, discounted or confined. We conceptualise this process

Beyond the scope: a global perspective on gender disparity among advanced endoscopists.

BACKGROUND: Women remain underrepresented in advanced endoscopy. Factors such as ergonomics, concerns over radiation exposure, and traditional family roles have been identified as barriers in prior studies. To date, no published study has surveyed potential reasons for this at an international level. We aimed to assess factors that may contribute to poor uptake of advanced endoscopy training among women on a global scale. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was designed by the mentees of the inaugural Women in Endoscopy Mentorship Program, including questions on demographics, endoscopy, family,

Investigating the conditions in which women GPs thrive in general practice: what works, for whom, how and in what circumstances?

BACKGROUND: Global trends indicate an increasing number of women training as doctors. However this is not a group who appear to be thriving at work. Women GPs are at high risk of leaving the profession, experience higher rates of burnout, anxiety and depression and slower career progression than male counterparts. Existing research shows that patients value being seen by women GPs, and this staff group focus more on an individual's care needs while spending longer with them. This may contribute to their burnout and intention to leave the profession. Women GPs are also more likely to work part-

Professionalism is judged by appearances ... like it or not.

Exploring the larger subject of executive professionalism should include the whole range of behavior issues that affect others' perceptions of you. In this competitive environment, with limited time to manage relationships, physician executives must take control of all aspects affecting their credibility and communications. This is not to suggest that you become the stereotyped, air-brushed news anchor, all style and little substance, but that you create a total package, one in which the "inside" and the "outside" of your presentation are complementary. Focus your attention on how well you hav

Bolstering the pathway to promote scientific workforce diversity: the UCSF Mid-Career Development Program.

PROBLEM: Academic medical institutions face longstanding challenges in recruiting and retaining historically excluded, midcareer research faculty. Although progress in recruiting has been documented, retention has focused on individuals rather than a system-level approach. APPROACH: The University of California San Francisco (UCSF) Mid-Career Development Program was launched in 2020 to advance and retain historically excluded research faculty (scholars) and their historically excluded mentees via a novel program that provided faculty discretionary funding of $150,000 per person over 2 years,

Gender equity and career progression among Croatian oncology professionals compared with the ESMO global survey.

BACKGROUND: Based on the 2016 and 2021 ESMO Women for Oncology (W4O) surveys, which revealed persistent gender disparities in oncology, we conducted a national survey to examine career-related challenges among oncology professionals in Croatia and compare them with international trends. METHODS: We administered an anonymous online survey adapted from the 2021 ESMO W4O questionnaire, contextualized for the Croatian setting. The survey explored the perceived impact of gender, political affiliation, religion, and sexual orientation on career development. Responses were analyzed by gender and age.

Career Development and Learning Pathways of Paralympic Coaches With a Disability.

The purpose of this study was to gain an understanding of the career development and learning pathways of Paralympic head coaches who previously competed as Paralympic athletes. Each coach participated in a semistructured interview. A thematic analysis of the data revealed three higher order themes, which were called becoming a coach, learning to coach, and lifelong learning and teaching. Across these themes, participants discussed interactions with other coaches and athletes with a disability, learning from mentors and coaching clinics, as well as limited formal educational opportunities they

Employment pathways of individuals with spinal cord injury living in Switzerland: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Labour market participation (LMP) represents a key goal of rehabilitation for individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI). To achieve this goal, Swiss SCI rehabilitation centres seek, together with their clients, viable follow-up solutions for returning to work after initial rehabilitation. However, the long-term outcomes of such vocational follow-up solutions have not been investigated so far, and there is a paucity of knowledge regarding the various types of employment pathways that persons with SCI living in Switzerland may experience. OBJECTIVE: To examine long-term employment p

[Career expectations and the type of dentist in the light of burnout].

The aim of this study was to measure if dentists with unfulfilled career expectations have higher burnout scores than dentists who succeeded in realising their expectations. Furthermore, the relation between type of dentist and burnout was investigated. It appeared that dentists who experienced reality being worse than expected, showed higher burnout levels, as did dentists putting more interest in life outside practice. It is recommended that attention for realistic career expectations is a regularly recurring topic in dental education. Also, introspection upon the type of dentist one prefers

Faculty development in a changing academic environment.

Faculty development--thought of not merely as improving teaching skills, but more broadly as nurturing the growth of trainees into accomplished faculty--is critical to the existence of academic medical centers. Profound changes in academic medicine and health care delivery are making the traditional model of faculty development obsolete. That model is now inadequate and untenable in the face of shrinking government support, changes in the sophistication, costs, and funding of biomedical research, changes in the reimbursement systems for hospitals and physicians, a general loss of respect for t

Non-nurse college graduates: a new resource for future nurse practitioners.

Non-nurse college graduates are admitted to the master's of science in nursing (MSN) degree program at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UTK). Over the years, a majority of these non-traditional students have chosen the family nurse practitioner clinical concentration. The purpose of this study was to compare non-traditional and traditional family nurse practitioner (FNP) graduates in terms of academic and career-development characteristics. The study population consisted of all 91 (48 non-traditional and 43 traditional) UTK FNP graduates from 1981 to 1986. Little difference was found be

Hydro chronicles.

This article is based on the 2025 ASCRS Binkhorst Lecture which I delivered in Los Angles in April 2025. It will focus on the basic but oft-neglected step in phacoemulsification: hydrodissection. Over a 40 year career, I have had a particular interest in the techniques of 'hydro' manoeuvres to achieve nuclear mobility. The introduction of intra-operative OCT in 2017 allowed 'live' imaging of hydrodissection and hydrodelamination helping in our understanding of cleavage planes. Complications of hydrodissection like the 'pupil snap sign' will be analysed and the relevance of hydrodissection in m

Contributors to Independent Research Funding Success from the Perspective of K12 BIRCWH Program Directors.

INTRODUCTION: Faculty training awards are an important means of advancing early career faculty in research. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Building Interdisciplinary Research Careers in Women's Health (BIRCWH) is a long-running K12 career development program and has been integral in promoting the research success of faculty nationally. We surveyed BIRCWH program directors to understand factors likely to influence long-term research careers and funding success. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We developed an online survey containing open-ended questions about individual and programmatic attrib

Breaking the Mold: Partnering with the National Institutes of Health Intramural Research Program to Accelerate PhD Training.

Immunology is an increasingly interdisciplinary field. Here we describe a new model for interinstitutional graduate training as partnerships between complementary laboratories. This collaborative model reduces time to graduation without compromising productivity or alumni outcomes. We offer our experience with one such program and thoughts on the ingredients for their success. Despite tremendous recent advances in technology, communications, and the translation of basic scientific discoveries into new diagnostics and therapies for human diseases, graduate training in immunology and other areas

Ensuring high-quality patient care: the role of accreditation, licensure, specialty certification and revalidation in medicine.

CONTEXT: The accreditation of medical school programmes and the licensing and revalidation (or recertification) of doctors are thought to be important for ensuring the quality of health care. Whereas regulation of the medical profession is mandated in most jurisdictions around the world, the processes by which doctors become licensed, and maintain their licences, are quite varied. With respect to educational programmes, there has been a recent push to expand accreditation activities. Here too, the quality standards on which medical schools are judged can vary from one region to another. OBJEC
