Common carotid artery blood flow volume in extremely preterm infants.

AIM: The aim of this study was to determine carotid blood flow volume, a surrogate for cerebral blood flow, using Doppler ultrasound in extremely preterm infants. METHODS: In infants <29 weeks, right common carotid artery flow volume (RCCAF) was calculated from vessel diameter and intensity-weighted mean velocity measured using Doppler ultrasound on days 1 and 3. In addition, left ventricular output (LVO), ductus arteriosus characteristics and invasive mean arterial blood pressure (MABP) were obtained. RESULTS: Sixty infants with mean gestation of 25.8 weeks were studied. The median RCCAF in

Common carotid and brachial artery hemodynamic alterations in periodontal disease.

AIM: In patients affected by periodontal disease, hypertension and systemic inflammation might cause an arterial hemodynamic derangement; this, in turn, can act as a mediator of the atherogenic process often seen in these patients. This study aimed at a comprehensive hemodynamic evaluation in periodontal patients. METHODS: Fourty-eight subjects participating to a cardiovascular prevention programme were enrolled. Periodontitis, classical risk factors for atherosclerosis, and shear and tensile forces in both carotid and brachial arteries were evaluated. Calculated periodontal indexes were plaq

Left common carotid artery cannulation for type A aortic dissections.

We used left common carotid artery cannulation for repair of type A aortic dissection in 2 patients for whom both femoral artery and axillary artery cannulation were thought to be more dangerous, due to dissection of the brachiocephalic trunk and left subclavian artery in association with abdominal stenosis. Before performing end-to-side anastomosis, we attached a small partial clamp to the left common carotid artery, thereby maintaining adequate cerebral blood flow during perfusion. To date, neither of our patients has experienced neurologic complications related to this procedure. We believe

Results of subclavian to carotid artery bypass for occlusive disease of the common carotid artery: A retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Optimal treatment of significant atherosclerosis of the common carotid artery (CCA) is not well-defined. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the long-term results of prosthetic subclavian to carotid bypass for occlusive disease of the CCA. MATERIAL AND METHODS: From January 1994 to December 2015, 45 patients, mean age 67 years, underwent an ipsilateral subclavian to carotid bypass for occlusive disease of the CCA. Thirty-eight patients (84%) presented with neurologic symptoms, including transitory ischemic attacks in 29 cases and minor strokes in 9 cases. The graft material

Color duplex sonography of occlusion of the common carotid artery with reversed flow in the extracranial internal carotid artery.

In a small percentage of cases with an occluded common carotid artery (CCA), the patency of the arteries beyond the carotid bulb is preserved. Color duplex sonography is useful for assessing blood flow in these vessels. We present a case of retrograde flow in an internal carotid artery (ICA) with an occluded ipsilateral CCA identified using color duplex sonography in a 70-year-old man with diabetes and known atherosclerotic disease. Color duplex sonography revealed that the right CCA was totally occluded near its origin and that flow was re-established at the bulb. Flow in the right ICA was di

One-Stage Angioplasty and Stenting of Ostium of Left Common Carotid Artery and Stenting of Left Internal Carotid Artery.

Our aim was to report techniques and our experience in One-stage angioplasty and stenting of ostium of left common carotid and left internal carotid arteries in an octogenarian man with transient ischemic attack, who was completely recovered from neurologic insults short time after the procedure. An 81-year-old man presented with a transient ischemic attack. Neurologic examination showed left side transient visual obscuration or amaurosis fugax and right hemiparesis. Carotid duplex imaging revealed an 80% stenosis of the left internal carotid artery (LICA) and 95 % of the ostium of left common

An original technique for the treatment of symptomatic common carotid artery occlusion and concomitant ipsilateral internal carotid artery stenosis.

Successful hybrid treatment of the total symptomatic acute occlusion of a common carotid artery (CCA) concomitant to ipsilateral internal carotid artery (ICA) stenosis has only been described once in the literature to date. The management of this anatomic distribution of disease can be a challenge both to plan and perform. The aim of this paper is to report an original hybrid revascularization technique for the treatment of two patients with symptomatic CCA acute occlusion and ipsilateral ICA stenosis. Details of the surgical technique and mid-term follow-up are provided.

Isolated left common carotid artery connected to the pulmonary artery: where was the arterial duct?

A three-year-old boy was referred for persistent arterial duct. Transthoracic echocardiography showed a right aortic arch and an unusual Doppler flow in the arch vessels and the pulmonary artery. The tomodensitometry showed a right-sided aortic arch, with successive origin of the right common carotid, the right subclavian artery, and an aberrant (lusoria) left subclavian artery. The left common carotid took origin from the pulmonary trunk. During surgery, a fibrous cord independent from the anomaly was identified. An end-to-side anastomosis between the left carotid and the ascending aorta was

Extracranial posterior communicating artery bypass for revascularization of patients with common carotid artery occlusion.

BACKGROUND: Extracranial-intracranial bypass surgery provides blood flow augmentation in patients suffering from intracranial or long-distance conductance artery stenosis or occlusion that otherwise cannot be treated. The standard procedure for these cases is an anastomosis between the superficial temporal and middle cerebral arteries. However, in patients presenting with common carotid artery occlusion, the superficial temporal artery is no longer sufficiently perfused. For these patients, alternative revascularization strategies have to be applied. OBJECTIVE: To describe a novel strategy fo

Intima-media thickness of common carotid artery, carotid atherosclerosis and subtypes of ischemic cerebral disease.

It has been shown that common carotid intima-media thickness (CCA-IMT) is a useful outcome measure in clinical studies and intervention trials reflecting early stage of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular risk. The present study examined the association between CCA-IMT and incident ischemic stroke and its subtypes in 75 cases and 21 controls. Cases with ischemic brain infarctions (IBI) were consecutively recruited and classified into subtypes by CT and Bamford's classification (the size and site of infarct) like total anterior circulation infarcts (TACIs), partial anterior circulation infarcts
