Case-control studies of risk factors for primary biliary cirrhosis in two United Kingdom populations.

OBJECTIVE: The aetiology of primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) is largely unknown. Previous studies have indicated that both environmental and genetic risk factors may be important. DESIGN: We undertook a large case-control study to study possible risk factors in more detail. All patients were sent postal questionnaires on risk factors. PATIENTS: We identified two sets of PBC cases from a geographically defined epidemiology study (epidemiological cases) and from a survey of the national patient support group (Foundation cases). Controls were selected from the electoral roll in strata matched to

Clonal groups of enteropathogenic Escherichia coli isolated in case-control studies of diarrhoea in Bangladesh.

Recent case-control studies in Bangladesh showed a high prevalence of enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) strains (identified by DNA probes for virulence genes) associated with childhood diarrhoea. However, the clonal status of these strains is not known. A total of 94 EPEC isolates from 80 children with diarrhoea and 14 healthy matched controls isolated during 1991-1992 and 1993-1994 was characterised by serogrouping, enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus sequence PCR, and by a biochemical fingerprinting method (the phene plate or PhP system). Twelve O serogroups were found wit

Risk of acquiring Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease from blood transfusions: systematic review of case-control studies.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the strength of association between history of blood transfusion and development of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. DATA SOURCES: English and non-English language articles published from January 1966 to January 1999 were retrieved using a keyword search of Medline and Embase. These were supplemented by handsearching key journals and searching bibliographies of reviews. STUDY SELECTION: Two independent reviewers selected the relevant abstracts and articles. Articles were chosen that reported the results of case-control studies trying to identify rates of prior blood transfu

IUD use and the risk of ectopic pregnancy: a meta-analysis of case-control studies.

Because of inconsistent findings among case-control studies on the relationship between IUD use and the risk of ectopic pregnancy, a meta-analysis of published literature was conducted. From 1977 through 1994, 19 publications regarding 16 studies of ectopic pregnancy and IUD use were found by MEDLINE and manual search. The odds ratio (ORs) of ectopic pregnancy with current and past IUD use in each study were pooled. A quality score system was developed to assess each study. Funnel plot was used to assess potential publication biases. For current IUD use, when cases were compared to pregnant co

Hospital visitor-companions as a source of controls for case-control studies in the Philippines.

Hospital visitor-companions are being used as a source of controls in an ongoing case-control study on breast cancer in the Philippines. As a tool for rapid epidemiologic assessment in obtaining research data for case-control studies, visitor-companions may serve as an alternative source of controls. To determine their generalizability and consistency, this proposed group was compared to neighbourhood controls and to hospital-patient controls. Hospital visitor-companions were comparable to neighbourhood controls in terms of cooperation in the interviews, height, weight, marital status, longest

Risk factors for cholera transmission in Haiti during inter-peak periods: insights to improve current control strategies from two case-control studies.

Two community-based density case-control studies were performed to assess risk factors for cholera transmission during inter-peak periods of the ongoing epidemic in two Haitian urban settings, Gonaives and Carrefour. The strongest associations were: close contact with cholera patients (sharing latrines, visiting cholera patients, helping someone with diarrhoea), eating food from street vendors and washing dishes with untreated water. Protective factors were: drinking chlorinated water, receiving prevention messages via television, church or training sessions, and high household socioeconomic l

Associations of water quality with cholera in case-control studies: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Cholera is a significant health risk for low- and middle-income countries (LMIC), and the threat of outbreaks is likely to increase due to climate change. To keep up to date with the link between water quality and cholera, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to update a previous review while only focusing on water-related exposures. We searched Embase, Web of Science and PubMed for literature published between 2016 and 2022. Search terms were consistent with the previous review. Study quality was assessed using the Risk Of Bias In Non-randomized Studies - of Exposures (ROBINS-E)

Oxidative Stress and Related Biomarkers in Gilbert's Syndrome: A Secondary Analysis of Two Case-Control Studies.

Bilirubin is an important antioxidant and a modulator of biological functions. However, most of the protection against oxidative stress was shown in vitro or ex vivo. The aim of this case-control study was to investigate whether subjects with Gilbert's syndrome (GS) experience different levels of lipid and protein oxidation (as well as differences in oxidative stress related markers) compared to healthy controls. GS subjects (n =119) demonstrated higher serum levels of unconjugated bilirubin (p < 0.001), a lower BMI (p < 0.001), 37% higher antioxidant potential assessed as ferric reducing abil

Reinforcement and Compensatory Mechanisms in Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: A Systematic Review of Case-Control Studies.

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neuropsychological disorder that causes inattentiveness, hyperactivity, and impulsiveness in patients. Ventral striatal hypo-responsiveness, orbitofrontal cortex, and dopaminergic status in the brain are related to the pathogenesis of ADHD. Reinforcement tasks by monetary incentive delay (MID) was shown to produce more responsiveness in patients. In this study, we reviewed how reinforcement interventions and compensatory mechanisms affect the behavior of ADHD patients. This systematic review was undertaken as per the Preferred Reporting Item

The neuropsychological deficits and dissociations in Huntington Disease-Like 2: A series of case-control studies.

OBJECTIVES: Huntington's Disease Like-2 (HDL2) is a rare autosomal dominant genetic disease caused by a mutation in the JPH3 gene. The Huntington's Disease (HD) phenocopy has the greatest clinical resemblance to HD, but its neurocognitive characterisation is poorly researched. This study reports on the neurocognitive profile of seven HDL2 patients including preserved functions, deficits and dissociations (classical and strong) and provides a general characterisation of the cognitive dysfunction of HDL2 in relation to the progression of the disease. METHODS: The neuropsychological performance

Associations between low- and high-dose oral fluconazole and pregnancy outcomes: 3 nested case-control studies.

BACKGROUND: While topical azoles are the first-line treatment for fungal infections, oral fluconazole is frequently used during pregnancy. We aimed to assess the effect of exposure to low and high doses of fluconazole during pregnancy on the occurrence of spontaneous abortions, major congenital malformations and stillbirths. METHODS: Within the Quebec Pregnancy Cohort (1998-2015), we identified women exposed to low- (≤ 150 mg) and high-dose (> 150 mg) fluconazole, and women who were not exposed. For each case of spontaneous abortion or stillbirth, up to 5 controls were randomly selected using

Toxoplasma gondii Infection in Diabetes Mellitus Patients in China: Seroprevalence, Risk Factors, and Case-Control Studies.

The association between Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) infection and diabetes mellitus remains controversial. With the improvement of living standards, the prevalence rate of diabetes is steadily increasing in China. Thus, it is necessary to explore the possible association between toxoplasmosis and diabetes mellitus in China. Hence, case-control studies were conducted to explore the T. gondii seroprevalence and identify the risk factors and possible transmission routes of T. gondii infection in different types of diabetes, including type 1 diabetes (T1DM), type 2 diabetes (T2DM), and gestation

Early laparoscopic cholecystectomy is superior to delayed acute cholecystitis: a meta-analysis of case-control studies.

BACKGROUND: Since the advent of laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) there has been continued debate regarding the management of acute cholecystitis with either early or delayed LC. Nearly all studies have demonstrated that early LC has a significantly shorter total length of hospital stay compared with delayed LC. Although previous randomized controlled trials and meta-analysis have shown clinical outcomes to favour early surgery, clinical practice continues to vary significantly worldwide. In addition, there is much confusion in the optimal timing for early LC with definitions of early varying

A Bayesian approach to strengthen inference for case-control studies with multiple error-prone exposure assessments.

In case-control studies, exposure assessments are almost always error-prone. In the absence of a gold standard, two or more assessment approaches are often used to classify people with respect to exposure. Each imperfect assessment tool may lead to misclassification of exposure assignment; the exposure misclassification may be differential with respect to case status or not; and, the errors in exposure classification under the different approaches may be independent (conditional upon the true exposure status) or not. Although methods have been proposed to study diagnostic accuracy in the absen
