Role of neuropeptide Y (NPY) in the regulation of reproduction: study based on catfish model.

Significance of NPY in the regulation of GnRH-LH axis was evaluated. Considerable NPY immunoreactivity was seen in the components like olfactory system, basal telencephalon, preoptic and tuberal areas, and the pituitary gland that serve as neuroanatomical substrates for processing reproductive information. Close anatomical association as well as colocalizations of NPY and GnRH were seen in the olfactory receptor neurons, olfactory nerve fibers and their terminals in the glomeruli, ganglion cells of nervus terminalis, medial olfactory tracts, fibers in the ventral telencephalon and pituitary. Elevated levels of dietary ascorbic acid increase immune responses in channel catfish.

Channel catfish fingerlings were fed purified diets containing 0 to 3000 mg/kg of ascorbic acid until external signs of scurvy were seen in the fish fed the ascorbic acid-deficient diet. At this time, resistance to bacterial infection, antibody production, complement activity and phagocytic activity were assessed for fish from the various dietary treatments. Mortality rates of fish experimentally infected with Edwardsiella ictaluri, the bacterium causing enteric septicemia in channel catfish, decreased with increases in dietary ascorbic acid doses, ranging from 100% for fish fed the ascorbic a

Hormonal ratios as reliable biomarkers for sex identification in the Neotropical catfish Pimelodus maculatus.

Sex identification in teleosts with limited external sexual dimorphism remains a major challenge for aquaculture and reproductive management. To address this limitation, Pimelodus maculatus was used as a model to evaluate the potential of circulating sex steroids, including 17β-estradiol (E2), testosterone (T), and 11-ketotestosterone (11-KT), and the hormonal ratios T/E2 and 11-KT/E2 as minimally invasive biomarkers for sex identification. Females and males maintained in a recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) were evaluated at two sampling time points, in July and December 2024. Individual

Integrated assessment of Nitenpyram-induced physiological and microbial alterations in Chinese longsnout catfish.

Neonicotinoid insecticides such as nitenpyram pose potential risks to freshwater aquaculture species, yet their chronic effects on Chinese Longsnout Catfish remain unclear. Here, juvenile L. longirostris (12.5 ± 1.0 g; 8.2 ± 0.5 cm) were exposed to 0, 10, 100, and 1000 µg/L nitenpyram for 60 days under static-renewal conditions. Growth performance, oxidative stress, liver histopathology, and gut microbiota were assessed. Significant adverse effects occurred at ≥ 100 µg/L, including growth inhibition (weight gain 18.3–42.5%), oxidative stress (SOD and CAT 21.7–58.2%; MDA 35.6–89.1%), hepatic in

Polyethylene nanoplastics intensify toxicity of potassium clavulanate in African catfish (Clarias gariepinus).

Nanoplastics (NPs) and antibiotics frequently co-occur in aquatic environments, yet their combined effects on fish health remain poorly understood. This study examined the individual and joint toxicity of polyethylene nanoplastics (PE-NPs; 20 and 80 nm, 5 mg L⁻¹) and potassium clavulanate (CA; 100 ng L⁻¹) in African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) during a 15-day exposure followed by a 15-day recovery phase. Exposure to PE-NPs (20 nm) alone significantly increased erythrocyte apoptosis (2.8-fold vs. control, p < 0.001), while CA alone also caused significant DNA damage (1.9-fold vs. control, p <

Pattern of color inheritance in African catfish (Clarias gariepinus): an expression of a Mendelian law.

In this study the pattern of color of inheritance based on Mendel's laws on the Clarias gariepinus strain was evaluated, to ascertain the different traits of albino, normally pigmented, and a combination of both traits that could be passed across from the parent stocks to the progenies. Since albinism is caused by a series of genetic abnormalities resulting in the reduction of melanin production, partial diallel cross between normally pigmented and albino fish was carried out using two females (albino and normal pigmented brood fish) weighing 2.5 kg and 3 kg, respectively; they were used in cr

Identification of an Epigenetically Marked Locus within the Sex Determination Region of Channel Catfish.

Channel catfish has an XY sex determination system. However, the X and Y chromosomes harbor an identical gene content of 950 genes each. In this study, we conducted comparative analyses of methylome and transcriptome of genetic males and genetic females before gonadal differentiation to provide insights into the mechanisms of sex determination. Differentially methylated CpG sites (DMCs) were predominantly identified on the sex chromosome, most notably within the sex determination region (SDR), although the overall methylation profiles across the entire genome were similar between genetic males

Osteolytic Lesion of the First Metatarsal After Catfish Spine Injury: A Case Report.

CASE: A 17-year-old adolescent boy complained of plantar pain at the first metatarsal 2 months after a catfish spine injury. Imaging was consistent with a retained foreign body, and surrounding osteolysis was concerning for osteomyelitis. He underwent surgical debridement and was found to have inflammation and necrosis, apparently caused by catfish spine venom. CONCLUSION: Although osteolytic lesions are commonly attributed to infection or tumor, in the situation of venomous injuries, osteolysis can be a sequela of the severe local inflammatory reaction due to the toxins. Debridement is vital

Olfactory flow in the sea catfish, Ariopsis felis (L.): Origin, regulation, and resampling.

The olfactory epithelium of the sea catfish, Ariopsis felis, is found on a pinnate array of lamellae (the olfactory rosette) housed within a nasal chamber. The nasal anatomy of A. felis suggests an ability to capture external water currents. We prepared models from X-ray micro-computed tomography scans of two preserved specimens of A. felis. We then used dye visualisation and computational fluid dynamics to show that an external current induced a flow of water through a) the nasal chamber and b) the sensory channels of the olfactory rosette. The factors responsible for inducing flow through th

Protein Hydrolysate from Pterygoplichthys disjunctivus, Armoured Catfish, with High Antioxidant Activity.

Pterygoplichthys disjunctivus, locally named the armoured catfish, is a by-catch of tilapia fishing that accounts for up to 80% of total captured fish in the Adolfo Lopez Mateos dam, in Michoacán, México, affecting the economy of its surrounding communities. This invasive fish is discarded by fishermen since native people do not consume it, partly due to its appearance, yet it is rich in protein. The aim of this study was to produce hydrolysates from armoured catfish using food-grade proteases (neutrases HT and PF and alcalase PAL) and investigate the processing conditions (pH and temperature)

A Zone-II Flexor Tendon Injury Secondary to a Catfish Spine: A Case Report.

CASE: We present the case of a 17-year-old man who sustained a delayed rupture of a zone-II flexor tendon injury in the long finger from a catfish spine, which caused local envenomization and a likely secondary bacterial infection. He underwent surgical exploration and irrigation and debridement of the finger. The flexor digitorum profundus tendon was found to be lacerated and was primarily repaired. CONCLUSION: Catfish spines can cause traumatic disruption of anatomic structures and can envenomate the area of injury, which can lead to a secondary bacterial infection. We review the literature

Small molecules targeting LapB protein prevent Listeria attachment to catfish muscle.

Listeria monocytogenes is a Gram-positive foodborne pathogen and the causative agent of listeriosis. L. monocytogenes lapB gene encodes a cell wall surface anchor protein, and mutation of this gene causes Listeria attenuation in mice. In this work, the potential role of Listeria LapB protein in catfish fillet attachment was investigated. To achieve this, boron-based small molecules designed to interfere with the active site of the L. monocytogenes LapB protein were developed, and their ability to prevent L. monocytogenes attachment to fish fillet was tested. Results indicated that seven out of

The effect of environmental hypercapnia and size on nitrite toxicity in the striped catfish (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus).

Striped catfish (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus) are farmed intensively at high stocking densities in Vietnam where they are likely to encounter environmental hypercapnia as well as occasional high levels of aquatic nitrite. Nitrite competes with Cl(-) for uptake at the branchial HCO3(-)/Cl(-) exchanger, causing a drastic reduction in the blood oxygen carrying capacity through the formation of methaemoglobin and nitrosylhaemoglobin. Environmental hypercapnia induces a respiratory acidosis where the branchial HCO3(-)/Cl(-) exchange activity is reduced in order to retain HCO3(-) for pH recovery, wh

Risks of waterborne copper exposure to a cultivated freshwater Neotropical catfish (Rhamdia quelen).

As it is the case in all animal food production systems, it is often necessary to treat farmed fish for diseases and parasites. Quite frequently, fish farmers still rely on the aggressive use of copper to control bacterial infections and infestations by ecto-parasites, and to manage the spread of diseases. The susceptibility of the neotropical fish Rhamdia quelen to copper was here evaluated at different waterborne copper concentrations (2, 7 or 11 μg Cu L(-1)) for 96 h, through a multi biomarkers approach. Liver histopathological findings revealed leukocyte infiltration, hepatocyte vacuolizat

Determination of the median lethal dose of botulinum serotype E in channel catfish fingerlings.

The median lethal dose of botulinum serotype E in 5.3-g channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus fingerlings was determined. Five tanks (five fish/tank) were assigned to each of the following treatment groups: 70, 50, 35, 25, or 15 pg of purified botulinum serotype E. Fish were injected intracoelomically and observed for 96 h. Administration of the toxin resulted in initial hyperactivity followed by erratic swimming, paresis, and death. The cumulative mortality by treatment group was 100% at 70 pg, 96% at 50 pg, 100% at 35 pg, 88% at 25 pg, and 56% at 15 pg. The median lethal dose was calculated as

Cestodes (Caryophyllidea) of the stinging catfish Heteropneustes fossilis (Siluriformes: Heteropneustidae) from Asia.

The stinging catfish Heteropneustes fossilis (Bloch) (Siluriformes: Heteropneustidae) has been reported to harbor as many as 19 species of caryophyllidean tapeworms (Cestoda) of 11 genera in tropical Asia (Indomalayan zoogeographical region). However, a critical review of the species composition has shown that only 1 species, Lucknowia fossilisi Gupta, 1961 (Lytocestidae), is a specific parasite of H. fossilis. Molecular cloning, characterization and expression of thyroid-stimulating hormone receptor in channel catfish.

Thyroid-stimulating hormone receptors (TSHRs) are primarily expressed in the thyroid of vertebrates, however recently, transcripts encoding TSHR have been found abundantly in the gonads in a variety of fish species. The purpose of this study is to characterize the channel catfish TSHR and to examine whether the transcript are translated into protein in the gonad or store the transcript as maternal RNA for later use. The cDNA encoding the TSHR was isolated from the channel catfish thyroid but the transcript was determined to be expressed in a number of tissues, including the gonads. In fact, th
