Ceftriaxone-induced thrombocytopenia during tuberculosis treatment: a case report.

We present a case of drug-induced immune thrombocytopenia (DITP) proven to be due to ceftriaxone instead of assumed tuberculostatic treatment in a patient with miliary tuberculosis. It is important to identify the culprit drug in DITP to avoid discontinuing essential treatment, especially when more than one drug is implicated. In these cases additional analysis (drug-dependent platelet antibody testing) should be considered to prevent unnecessary replacement of a first-line regimen of tuberculostatic treatment with an alternative treatment regime.

Pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic comparison of ceftriaxone regimens in acute cholangitis.

The most important factors determining the prognosis of patients with acute cholangitis (AC) are prompt biliary drainage and appropriate choice of antibiotics. This study was performed to evaluate whether dividing the number of doses based on the PK-PD theory contributes to better clinical outcome in the management of acute cholangitis. We measured ceftriaxone levels in blood and bile in 21 cases diagnosed with moderate-to-severe AC. Eleven cases were administered 2 g of ceftriaxone once-daily (group A) and 10 cases were given 1 g of ceftriaxone twice-daily (group B). The theoretical effect of

Disulfiram-like Reaction Involving Ceftriaxone in a Pediatric Patient.

Several medications have been shown to cause disulfiram-like reactions in patients concomitantly exposed to ethanol, including specific cephalosporin antibiotics that possess a methylthiotetrazole substituent. Within the cephalosporin class, there are few reports of disulfiram-like reactions with ceftriaxone. This case report is the first to involve a pediatric patient, and it describes a mild but likely disulfiram-like reaction manifesting as facial flushing in an 8-year-old male upon receiving a ceftriaxone infusion preceded by a dose of prednisolone elixir (5% ethanol by volume) for presume

Report: Sensitivity pattern of ceftriaxone against different clinical isolates.

Emerging resistance against broad-spectrum antibiotics for standard empiric therapy is a global concern. Ceftriaxone (broad spectrum, third generation cephalosporin) is widely used in tertiary care settings to treat severe bacterial infections usually non-responsive to other antibiotics. The aim of the study is to evaluate the current sensitivity pattern of ceftriaxone (30μg/disk) among different clinical isolates. For this purpose, three hundred clinical isolates including Escherichia coli (25%), Staphylococcus aureus (30%), Salmonella typhi (17%) and Klebsiella pneumoniae(20%) were collected

Ceftriaxone for Alexander's Disease: A Four-Year Follow-Up.

In 2010, we reported the successful clinical outcome related to a 20-month course of intravenous, cyclical ceftriaxone, in a patient with adult-onset Alexander's disease. We now provide evidence that the progression of the patient's signs/symptoms was halted and reversed with a 4-year-long extension of the trial. The patient's clinical signs/symptoms were evaluated before the start and every 6 months for 6 years. For the early 2 years, without therapy, and for the following 4 years, after intravenous ceftriaxone 2 g daily, for 3 weeks monthly during the initial 4 months, then for 15 days monthl

Transient false-positive hepatobiliary scan associated with ceftriaxone therapy.

Drug related false-positive hepatobiliary imaging is uncommon. The authors present a case of a 54-year-old woman who was treated with intravenous ceftriaxone for bacterial meningitis. Symptoms of acute cholecystitis subsequently developed and a sonogram revealed a gallstone. A Tc-99m DISIDA hepatobiliary study was positive for cystic duct obstruction. After discontinuation of ceftriaxone, the patient's clinical condition improved and, 2 weeks later, a repeat hepatobiliary scan was normal. High doses of ceftriaxone and prolonged administration may lead to formation of pseudocholelithiasis and s

[Short-term ceftriaxone treatment of typhoid fever in children].

Ten children, diagnosed as having typhoid fever, were enrolled in this study between April and September, 1989. Ceftriaxone was administered intravenously, in two dosages adding to 50-100 mg/kg/day over as short a period as five days. The mean period of defervescence was 3.2 days. No adverse reactions to the drug occurred; all those fulfilling the prescribed course were cured. To date, no relapse has been reported nor has any patient become a chronic carrier. Shortterm use of Ceftriaxone had the advantages of rapid response, abscence of serious side effects, and low failure rate in treating ch

Ceftriaxone given repeatedly cures manifest syphilis in the rabbit.

Repeated intramuscular injection of ceftriaxone to rabbits with manifest syphilitic orchitis leads to clinical cure as does penicillin, given the serum levels reached are similar to the ones obtained clinically in man. Totally different to untreated controls the Treponema pallidum hemagglutination (TPHA) titers remain relatively low and later even tend to decrease further. Thus, it seems justified to start clinical trials on the definite role of ceftriaxone in the treatment of clinical syphilis.

Ceftriaxone-Induced Leukopenia During Inpatient Rehabilitation: A Case Report.

Ceftriaxone is a commonly used third-generation cephalosporin with a favorable safety profile and widespread use across acute and post-acute care settings. Although rare, hematologic adverse effects such as leukopenia and neutropenia have been reported. These complications may be underrecognized in inpatient rehabilitation populations, where patients frequently have multiple comorbidities and ongoing antimicrobial exposure. An 80-year-old man undergoing inpatient rehabilitation for critical illness myopathy developed progressive leukopenia following initiation of ceftriaxone for a suspected ur

Ceftriaxone-resistant multidrug-resistant Salmonella Typhi sepsis in pregnancy.

A primigravida at 26 weeks' gestation visiting from Pakistan presented with fever, abdominal pain and hypotension suggestive of sepsis and required admission to the intensive care unit. Blood culture grew a multidrug-resistant (MDR) Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi isolate that was resistant to cephalosporins but susceptible to carbapenems. Intravenous meropenem was commenced, resulting in a rapid clinical improvement within 48 hours. She completed a 14-day course of meropenem without maternal or fetal adverse effects, and repeat blood cultures were sterile. The remainder of her pregnancy was

Ceftriaxone-Induced Hemolytic Anemia: A Rare and Fatal Reaction.

Ceftriaxone, a regularly used antibiotic for broad-spectrum coverage, is a rare cause of hemolytic anemia. Patients may present with truncal pain, nausea, vomiting, and an acute drop in hemoglobin within 48 hours of administration. Prompt recognition and initiation of treatment are essential. We describe a case of a 65-year-old woman being treated for osteomyelitis who developed hemolytic anemia, disseminated intravascular coagulation, and multi-system organ failure after being de-escalated from cefepime to ceftriaxone.

A Saudi Woman with Ceftriaxone Induced Fixed Drug Eruption.

BACKGROUND: A fixed drug eruption (FDE) is an immunological cutaneous adverse reaction, classified as a cutaneous adverse drug reaction (CADR) and characterized by well-defined lichenoid lesions that occur at the same site each time. Ceftriaxone is a third-generation antibiotic of cephalosporin antibiotics of the beta-lactam antibiotic family, which has typical in vitro activity against many Gram-negative aerobic bacteria. This is the first clinical case from Saudi Arabia and the fifth in the world to document a woman's experience with recurrent FDE after repeated ceftriaxone use. Case Report.

Ceftriaxone attenuates hypoxic-ischemic brain injury in neonatal rats.

BACKGROUND: Perinatal brain injury is the leading cause of subsequent neurological disability in both term and preterm baby. Glutamate excitotoxicity is one of the major factors involved in perinatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). Glutamate transporter GLT1, expressed mainly in mature astrocytes, is the major glutamate transporter in the brain. HIE induced excessive glutamate release which is not reuptaked by immature astrocytes may induce neuronal damage. Compounds, such as ceftriaxone, that enhance the expression of GLT1 may exert neuroprotective effect in HIE. METHODS: We used a ne
