Cefuroxime, a beta-lactamase-resistant cephalosporin with a broad spectrum of gram-positive and -negative activity.

The in vitro activity of cefuroxime, a cephalosporin antibiotic, was investigated against 604 isolates and compared with the activity of other beta-lactam compounds. Cefuroxime had activity comparable to that of other cephalosporins, including cefamandole and cefoxitin, against streptococcal and staphylococcal species; most streptococci were inhibited by 0.1 mug or less per ml, and staphylococci were inhibited by 1.6 mug or less per ml. Enterococci were relatively resistant. Cefuroxime inhibited beta-lactamase-producing Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Haemophilus influenzae. Cefuroxime had excellent

Cefuroxime-induced toxic epidermal necrolysis in a 4-year-old male child: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) is a rare, life-threatening mucocutaneous reaction characterized by extensive epidermal detachment and multi-organ involvement. It is most commonly triggered by drugs, including antibiotics such as cephalosporins. Although TEN predominantly affects adults and females, its occurrence in pediatric males is exceedingly rare. Here, we report a fatal case of cefuroxime-induced TEN in a 4-year-old child, emphasizing the importance of early diagnosis, appropriate drug withdrawal, and timely intervention. CASE PRESENTATION: A 4-year-old Pakistani boy pre

In Vivo Evaluation of Cefuroxime Axetil-Loaded Bioadhesive Nanoparticles to Treat Haemophilus influenzae-Induced Otitis Media.

Otitis media (OM) is a common disease in children. One of the most common pathogens causing OM is non-typeable Haemophilus influenzae (NTHi). NTHi in the middle ear can be successfully eradicated by a regimen of oral antibiotics sustained for 7-10 days (e.g., cefuroxime axetil 250 mg/day for patients aged 3 months to 2 years and 500 mg/day for patients ages ≥2 years). However, lack of compliance is relevant to treatment failure or early relapse. In order to overcome these challenges, we have developed antibiotics-loaded bioadhesive nanoparticles (BNPs) that can adhere to the epidermis of the m

BACKGROUND: Cataract surgery is the most commonly performed surgical procedure in developed countries. The annual number of cataract surgeries in Germany is about 600,000. Acute postoperative endophthalmitis is a very severe and the most dreaded complication of cataract surgery. Various operative and non-operative measures have been suggested to prevent this serious complication. The European Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS) study of intracameral cefuroxime was the first prospective, randomised and partially placebo-controlled clinical trial showing the efficacy of antibiotic
