Mobile phone use in young adults who self-identify as being "Very stressed out" or "Zen": An exploratory study.

Previous studies have reported a positive association between mobile phone use and psychological stress. However, the reasons why stressed out individuals use their cell phones more are not clear. To gain further insight on this relationship, we performed secondary analyses on a database of 87 healthy young adults aged 18-35 years who self-categorized themselves as being "Very stressed out" (N = 46) or "Zen" (N = 41). All participants were assessed for psychological stress, duration and nature (hedonistic vs. utilitarian) of mobile phone use, involvement with the mobile phone and levels of nom

Headache in the international cohort study of mobile phone use and health (COSMOS) in the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.

Headache is a common condition with a substantial burden of disease worldwide. Concerns have been raised over the potential impact of long-term mobile phone use on headache due to radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMFs). We explored prospectively the association between mobile phone use at baseline (2009-2012) and headache at follow-up (2015-2018) by analysing pooled data consisting of the Dutch and UK cohorts of the Cohort Study of Mobile Phone Use and Health (COSMOS) (N = 78,437). Frequency of headache, migraine, and information on mobile phone use, including use of hands-free device

FDTD assessment of human exposure to electromagnetic fields from WiFi and bluetooth devices in some operating situations.

In this work, the numerical dosimetry in human exposure to the electromagnetic fields from antennas of wireless devices, such as those of wireless local area networks (WLAN) access points or phone and computer peripherals with Bluetooth antennas, is analyzed with the objective of assessing guidelines compliance. Several geometrical configurations are considered to simulate possible exposure situations of a person to the fields from WLAN or Bluetooth antennas operating at 2400 MHz. The exposure to radiation from two sources of different frequencies when using a 1800 MHz GSM mobile phone connect

Road Injuries Associated With Cellular Phone Use While Walking or Riding a Bicycle or an Electric Bicycle: A Case-Crossover Study.

Vulnerable road users (pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorcyclists) account for an increasing proportion of traffic injuries. We used a case-crossover study design to examine the association between cell-phone usage and traffic injuries among pedestrians, bicyclists, and electric bicycle riders during the course of their travel. We studied 643 pedestrians, bike riders, and electric bike riders aged 10-35 years who were involved in a road injury, visited the emergency department in one of the 3 hospitals in Shanghai, China, in 2019, and owned a cell phone. Half of the participants (n = 323; 50.2

No Digital Divide? Technology Use among Homeless Adults.

Homeless adults experience increased risk of negative health outcomes, and technology-based interventions may provide an opportunity for improving health in this population. However, little is known about homeless adults' technology access and use. Utilizing data from a study of 421 homeless adults moving into PSH, this paper presents descriptive technology findings, and compares results to age-matched general population data. The vast majority (94%) currently owned a cell phone, although there was considerable past 3-month turnover in phones (56%) and phone numbers (55%). More than half curre

Association between reproductive health and nonionizing radiation exposure.

Recently, a decreasing rate of fertility has to be credited to an array of factors such as environmental, health and lifestyle. Male infertility is likely to be affected by the strong exposure to heat and radiations. The most common sources of nonionizing radiations are cell phones, laptops, Wi-Fi and microwave ovens, which may participate to the cause of male infertility. One of the major sources of daily exposure to non-ionizing radiation is mobile phones. A mobile phone is now basically dominating our daily life through better services such as connectivity, smartphone devices. However, the

Healthcare workers mobile phone usage: A potential risk for viral contamination. Surveillance pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Mobile phones are commonly used by healthcare workers (HCW) in the working environment, as they allow instant communication and endless resource utilisation. Studies suggest that mobile phones have been implicated as reservoirs of bacterial pathogens, with the potential to cause nosocomial infection. This study aimed to investigate the presence of Respiratory Syncytial Virus, Adenovirus and Influenza Virus on HCWs mobile phones and to identify risk factors implied by HCWs practice of mobile phones in a clinical paediatric environment. METHODS: Fifty HCWs' mobile phones were swabbe

Use of a 3D-printed smartphone microscope adapter in a general biology lab course.

High school and undergraduate students often use personal cell phones to document experimental data or to capture images of microscopic observations on their phones. We utilized a 3D-printed smartphone mount adapter for microscopes in a predominantly first-year undergraduate general biology classroom. The hands-free mount is low-cost, works with different brands of phones, different kinds of microscopes, and does not damage the phone or microscope. At the start of the semester, a 10-question pre-use survey was conducted using a 4-choice Likert scale (n = 330). 73% of respondents strongly agree

The prevalence of nomophobia: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Nomophobia (no mobile phone phobia) is a term used to describe discomfort or anxiety experienced when individuals are unable to use or access their mobile phones. Although not formally recognized in the DSM-5 or ICD-11, nomophobia has gained increasing research attention. The present study systematically reviewed and meta-analyzed the global prevalence of nomophobia, based on 43 studies (n = 36,656 participants) from 18 countries. Only studies using validated self-report instruments, primarily the Nomophobia Questionnaire (NMP-Q), were included. Subgroup analysis and meta-regression were condu

Harnessing technology for adolescent health promotion.

Sexually active adolescents are at risk for unintended pregnancy. Teen pregnancies can be prevented by consistent use of birth control, such as oral contraceptives. However, many teens forget their daily doses and eventually stop using oral contraceptives altogether. Teen pregnancies are more likely to be medically complicated and can adversely impact the teen, her child, and their community. Cell-phone use is becoming widespread, and teen cell-phone users frequently use text messaging. We describe a study in which we use cell-phone text-messaging technology in a novel way: we provide daily or

Histopathologic effects of mobile phone radiation exposure on the testes and sperm parameters: a systematic literature review of animal studies.

INTRODUCTION: Male infertility, often attributed to insufficient production of healthy and active sperm, can be exacerbated by electromagnetic radiation emitted from mobile phones, which disrupts normal spermatogenesis and leads to a notable decline in sperm quality. The main targets of mobile phone-induced damage in the testes are Leydig cells, seminiferous tubules, and sperm cells. The aim of this systematic literature review is to identify histopathological changes in the testes due to mobile phone radiation exposure and to examine its effects on sperm parameters in experimental animals.
