Cumulative sensitization and disease in a beryllium oxide ceramics worker cohort.

OBJECTIVE: We followed a cohort of 136 beryllium oxide ceramics workers from 1992 to 2003, including those who left employment, for beryllium sensitization and chronic beryllium disease (CBD). METHODS: We invited the cohort's participation in current worker surveys in 1992, 1998, 2000, and 2002-2003, and in former worker surveys in 2000-2001 and 2003. We calculated 11-year cumulative incidences (after 1992 initial survey) of sensitization and CBD, both crude and corrected for interval censoring; and period prevalences (including 1992 findings), crude and corrected. RESULTS: In 1992, point pr

Biphasic ceramics and fibrin sealant for bone reconstruction in ear surgery.

Bone reconstruction is still a matter of concern in middle ear surgery despite the large number of surgical techniques proposed. A composite made of biphasic calcium phosphate ceramic granules mixed with human fibrin sealant, forming a moldable material that is easy to set for bone reconstruction, has been used with success over a 16-year period for reconstruction of the posterior canal wall or for mastoid obliteration. In a retrospective series of 72 ears with long-term follow-up (average follow-up of 46 months), regular microscopic examination, and computed tomographic controls, we have eval

Mechanisms and structure of the bond between bone and hydroxyapatite ceramics.

Two assays were carried out to investigate the postulates that dissolution/reprecipitation phenomena and epistaxis are involved in the formation of the bond between sintered hydroxyapatite (HA) and bone. HA was exposed to a physiologic solution and the ions going into solution quantified using inductively coupled plasma (ICP) emission spectroscopy. The HA was retrieved and examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In the second assay, HA was implanted into Alsatian femura. Following retrieval, specimens were prepared and studied with SEM, at magnifications usually reserved for transmi

Occupational exposure to dust containing free silica in a ceramics factory.

In a ceramics plant employing 225 workers, respirable dust was collected into personal samplers worn by exposed workers. Analysis by X-ray diffraction documented exposures to free silica greater than 50 micrograms/m3-the permissible exposure level or threshold limit value-time weighted average proposed by the U.S. National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health-in 15 of 25 determinations. Excessive exposures were produced by dust with quartz content less than or equal to 8% by weight. If there had been such exposures to free silica-containing dust in the past, X-ray findings compatible wi

Design, structural evolution, and radiation attenuation behavior of HfO2-Modified ceramics.

This study investigates the effects of doping HfO2 (hafnium oxide) on Al2Si2O5(OH)4-KAlSi3O8-SiO2 ceramics, fabricated via conventional firing and sintering, for photon and neutron shielding applications. Experimental measurements were performed using a133Ba source for gamma shielding and a241Am/Be neutron source for neutron shielding. At 81 keV gamma energy, the radiation attenuation properties of Hf0 (undoped) and Hf5 (doped, containing 30 % HfO2) ceramics showed an increase in the mass attenuation coefficient from 0.180 to 1.812 cm2/g and in the linear attenuation coefficient from 0.417 to

In-situ nanomechanical responses of zirconia-containing lithium silicate glass-ceramics.

The high hardness and low fracture toughness of zirconia-containing lithium silicate glass ceramics (ZLS) leads to dominant brittle fracture behaviour, which prompts extensive surface and subsurface cracking during machining, reducing long-term stability of dental restorations. This study evaluated the in-situ nanoindentation behaviour of this material class aiming to describe the real-time deformation response and nanomechanical mechanisms of cracking in ZLS according to their crystallized state. The in-situ nanoindentation tests on polished pre-crystallized and crystallized ZLS (Vita Suprini

Living Porous Ceramics for Bacteria-Regulated Gas Sensing and Carbon Capture.

Microorganisms hosted in abiotic structures have led to engineered living materials that can grow, sense, and adapt in ways that mimic biological systems. Although porous structures should favor colonization by microorganisms, they have not yet been exploited as abiotic scaffolds for the development of living materials. Here, porous ceramics are reported that are colonized by bacteria to form an engineered living material with self-regulated and genetically programmable carbon capture and gas-sensing functionalities. The carbon capture capability is achieved using wild-type photosynthetic cyan

Toughening Ceramics down to Cryogenic Temperatures by Reentrant Strain-Glass Transition.

Ceramics, often exhibiting important functional properties like piezoelectricity, superconductivity, and magnetism, are usually mechanically brittle at room temperature and even more brittle at low temperature due to their ionic or covalent bonding nature. The brittleness in their working temperature range (mostly from room down to cryogenic temperatures) has been a limiting factor for the usefulness of these ceramics. In this Letter, we report a surprising "low-temperature toughening" phenomenon in a La-doped CaTiO_{3} perovskite ceramic, where a 2.5× increase of fracture toughness K_{IC} fro

Realizing reversible phase transformation of shape memory ceramics constrained in aluminum.

Small-scale shape memory ceramics exhibit superior shape memory or superelasticity properties, while their integration into a matrix material and the subsequent attainment of their reversible tetragonal-monoclinic phase transformations remains a challenge. Here, cerium-doped zirconia (CZ) reinforced aluminum (Al) matrix composite is fabricated, and both macroscopic and microscopic mechanical tests reveal more than doubled compressive strength and energy absorbance of the composites as compared with pure Al. Full austenitization in the CZ single-crystal clusters is achieved when they are constr

Zn-Sr-sintered true bone ceramics enhance bone repair and regeneration.

Bone defects are one of the toughest challenges faced by orthopedic surgeons worldwide, especially at critical sizes, which are caused by severe trauma, malignancy, or congenital disease. The ideal bone tissue-engineered scaffold for bone regeneration is the one that has good osteoconductivity, osteoinductivity, pore structure, and antibacterial properties. Metal ions have been recognized in recent years to be essential regulators of bone metabolism, and they are widely used for bone tissue engineering. In particular, zinc ions are of interest because of their ideal biocompatibility, osteogene

Biodegradation of HA and β-TCP Ceramics Regulated by T-Cells.

Biodegradability is one of the most important properties of implantable bone biomaterials, which is directly related to material bioactivity and the osteogenic effect. How foreign body giant cells (FBGC) involved in the biodegradation of bone biomaterials are regulated by the immune system is poorly understood. Hence, this study found that β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) induced more FBGCs formation in the microenvironment (p = 0.0061) accompanied by more TNFα (p = 0.0014), IFNγ (p = 0.0024), and T-cells (p = 0.0029) than hydroxyapatite (HA), resulting in better biodegradability. The final use

Finite element analysis of the fracture statistics of self-healing ceramics.

Self-healing materials have been recognized as a promising type of next-generation materials. Among them, self-healing ceramics play a particularly important role, and understanding them better is necessary. Therefore, in this study, we applied the oxidation kinetics-based constitutive model to finite element analysis of a series of damage-healing processes in self-healing ceramics (alumina/SiC composites). In the finite element analysis, the data on the microstructure distribution, such as relative density, size and aspect ratio of pores, and grain size, were taken as input values and reflect

Calcium Phosphate Ceramics Can Prevent Bisphosphonate-Related Osteonecrosis of the Jaw.

Bisphosphonate-associated osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ), a post-surgical non-healing wound condition, is one of the most common side effects in patients treated with nitrogen-containing bisphosphonates. Its physiopathology has been related with suppression of bone turnover, of soft tissue healing and infection. Biphasic calcium phosphates (BCP) are used as a drug delivery vehicle and as a bone substitute in surgical wounds. Due to their capacity to adsorb zoledronate, it was hypothesized these compounds might have a protective effect on the soft tissues in BRONJ wounds. To address this hypo

Bioactivity of Y2O3 and CeO2 doped SiO2-SrO-Na2O glass-ceramics.

The bioactivity of yttrium and cerium are investigated when substituted for Sodium (Na) in a 0.52SiO2-0.24SrO-0.24-xNa2O-xMO glass-ceramics (where x = 0.08 and MO = Y2O3 or CeO2). Bioactivity is monitored through pH and inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry where pH of simulated body fluid ranged from 7.5 to 7.6 and increased between 8.2 and 10.0 after 14-day incubation with the glass-ceramic disks. Calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P) levels in simulated body fluid after incubation with yttrium and cerium containing disks show a continual decline over the 14-day period. In contr

Magnetic Glass Ceramics by Sintering of Borosilicate Glass and Inorganic Waste.

Ceramics and glass ceramics based on industrial waste have been widely recognized as competitive products for building applications; however, there is a great potential for such materials with novel functionalities. In this paper, we discuss the development of magnetic sintered glass ceramics based on two iron-rich slags, coming from non-ferrous metallurgy and recycled borosilicate glass. The substantial viscous flow of the glass led to dense products for rapid treatments at relatively low temperatures (900-1000 °C), whereas glass/slag interactions resulted in the formation of magnetite crysta

Osteogenic properties of calcium phosphate ceramics and fibrin glue based composites.

Calcium phosphate (Ca-P) ceramics are currently used in various types of orthopaedic and maxillofacial applications because of their osteoconductive properties. Fibrin glue is also used in surgery due to its haemostatic, chemotactic and mitogenic properties and also as scaffolds for cell culture and transplantation. In order to adapt to surgical sites, bioceramics are shaped in blocks or granules and preferably in porous forms. Combining these bioceramics with fibrin glue provides a mouldable and self-hardening composite biomaterial. The aim of this work is to study the osteogenic properties o
