Neurohistiocytosis of the Cerebellum: A Rare Cause of Ataxia.

Erdheim-Chester disease (ECD) is a non-Langerhans cell histiocytosis that affects multiple body organs, notably the skeletal system. We examined a 58-year-old man who presented with ataxia and T2 hyperintensity of the middle cerebellar peduncles and dentate nuclei without contrast enhancement on MRI brain. Workup for malignancy revealed "hairy kidneys" on CT scan of the abdomen, and excisional biopsy of the retroperitoneal mass for concerns of lymphoma revealed foamy histiocytes that tested positive for CD68 and negative for CD1a, confirming the diagnosis of ECD. Further genetic testing on exc

Dissecting the links between cerebellum and dystonia.

Dystonia is a common movement disorder characterized by sustained muscle contractions. These contractions generate twisting and repetitive movements or typical abnormal postures, often exacerbated by voluntary movement. Dystonia can affect almost all the voluntary muscles. For several decades, the discussion on the pathogenesis has been focused on basal ganglia circuits, especially striatal networks. So far, although dystonia has been observed in some forms of ataxia such as dominant ataxias, the link between the cerebellum and dystonia has remained unclear. Recent human studies and experiment

Spinal cord projections to the cerebellum in the mouse.

The projections from the spinal cord to the cerebellar cortex were studied using retrograde neuronal tracers. Thus far, no study has shown the detailed topographic mapping of the projections from the spinal neuron clusters to the cerebellar cortex regions for experimental animals, and there are no studies for the mouse. Tracers Fluoro-Gold and cholera toxin B were injected into circumscribed regions of the cerebellar cortex, and retrogradely labeled spinal cord neurons were mapped throughout the spinal cord. Spinal projections to the cerebellar cortex were mainly from five neuronal columns--ce

Stereotactic radiosurgery for arteriovenous malformations of the cerebellum.

OBJECT: Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) of the posterior fossa have an aggressive natural history and propensity for hemorrhage. Although the cerebellum accounts for the majority of the posterior fossa volume, there is a paucity of stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) outcome data for AVMs of this region. The authors sought to evaluate the long-term outcomes and risks of cerebellar AVM radiosurgery. METHODS: This single-institution retrospective analysis reviewed the authors' experience with Gamma Knife surgery during the period 1987-2007. During this time 64 patients (median age 47 years, rang

Lesion-symptom mapping of the human cerebellum.

High-resolution structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has become a powerful tool in human cerebellar lesion studies. Structural MRI is helpful to analyse the localisation and extent of cerebellar lesions and to determine possible extracerebellar involvement. Functionally meaningful correlations between a cerebellar lesion site and behavioural data can be obtained both in subjects with degenerative as well as focal cerebellar disorders. In this review, examples are presented which demonstrate that MRI-based lesion-symptom mapping is helpful to study the function of cerebellar cortex and c

The neuropsychiatry of the cerebellum - insights from the clinic.

A central aspect of the cerebellar cognitive affective syndrome is the dysregulation of affect that occurs when lesions involve the 'limbic cerebellum' (vermis and fastigial nucleus). In this case series we describe neuropsychiatric disturbances in adults and children with congenital lesions including cerebellar agenesis, dysplasia, and hypoplasia, and acquired conditions including cerebellar stroke, tumor, cerebellitis, trauma, and neurodegenerative disorders. The behaviors that we witnessed and that were described by patients and families included distractibility and hyperactivity, impulsive

The cerebellum and motor dysfunction in neuropsychiatric disorders.

The cerebellum is densely interconnected with sensory-motor areas of the cerebral cortex, and in man, the great expansion of the association areas of cerebral cortex is also paralleled by an expansion of the lateral cerebellar hemispheres. It is therefore likely that these circuits contribute to non-motor cognitive functions, but this is still a controversial issue. One approach is to examine evidence from neuropsychiatric disorders of cerebellar involvement. In this review, we narrow this search to test whether there is evidence of motor dysfunction associated with neuropsychiatric disorders

Pathological laughter and crying: a link to the cerebellum.

Patients with pathological laughter and crying (PLC) are subject to relatively uncontrollable episodes of laughter, crying or both. The episodes occur either without an apparent triggering stimulus or following a stimulus that would not have led the subject to laugh or cry prior to the onset of the condition. PLC is a disorder of emotional expression rather than a primary disturbance of feelings, and is thus distinct from mood disorders in which laughter and crying are associated with feelings of happiness or sadness. The traditional and currently accepted view is that PLC is due to the damage

A review of otolith pathways to brainstem and cerebellum.

Our knowledge of otolith pathways is developing rapidly, but is still far from complete. Primary afferents from the sacculus and utricle terminate mainly in the lateral, inferior and caudal superior vestibular nuclei, and the ventral cerebellum, in particular the nodulus. Otolith signals descend via reticulo- and vestibulospinal pathways in the spinal cord to influence neck motoneurons and ascending proprioceptive afferents. Utricular information can reach the extraocular eye muscles via mono-, di-, and multisynaptic pathways, but saccular afferents probably only by multisynaptic pathways. The

Regionalization defects in the weaver mouse cerebellum.

The mammalian cerebellum consists of parasagittal bands and transverse zones that are laid down early in development. When the adult cerebellum is immunostained for the Purkinje cell-specific antigen zebrin II (i.e., aldolase C), compartmentation is reflected in alternating zebrin II+ (P+) and zebrin II- bands (P ). The zebrin II phenotype is Purkinje cell autonomous; thus, disruptions in the zebrin pattern may reflect early problems in pattern formation. Zebrin II expression has been examined in the weaver (wv) mouse cerebellum. Both zebrin II- and zebrin II Purkinje cells are present in the

[Unilateral aplasia of the cerebellum in Aicardi's syndrome].

A case of unilateral aplasia of the cerebellum in a girl with Aicardi's syndrome is described. Aplasia of an entire hemisphere is one of the least frequent malformations of the cerebellum. Hypoplasia, partial hemispheric defects of the cerebellum and, rarely, complete absence of one hemisphere have been described in Aicardi's syndrome, which is associated with multiple systemic and CNS malformations. In our patient, who presented the characteristic trial of infantile spasms, callosal agenesia and retinal lacuna, we also saw right cerebellar aplasia along with other CNS malformations using magn

[Actinomycotic abscess of the cerebellum: a case report].

A 38 year-old man presented fever and a clinical picture of intracranial hypertension and ataxic syndrome. A CT-scan disclosed an expanding lesion of the cerebellum. Surgical excision of the lesion was performed and pathological examination made the diagnosis of an actinomycotic abscess. The probable primary source of infection were the lungs and/or oral cavity. The postoperative course was uneventful, with complete recovery after a long period of treatment with penicillin (IV and PO). The authors review some aspects about central nervous system involvement in actinomycosis.

Adrenergic receptors in the cerebellum of olivopontocerebellar atrophy.

Using autoradiographic techniques we studied the changes that in adrenergic receptors occurred in the cerebellum of two olivopontocerebellar atrophy (OPCA) patients as compared with a control group. In OPCA cerebellum the densities of total beta-adrenoceptors were reduced along the cortex but increased in the white matter. Although mainly the beta 1 subtype was decreased along the cerebellar cortex, the increase of beta-receptors over the white matter was due to a selective raise in the beta 2 subtype. These findings suggest a postsynaptic neuronal location for the beta 1 subtype and a glial l

Anatomical studies on the cerebellum of the donkey of Egypt.

The cerebellar mass forms about 34.4 cm3. The ratio to the brain mass is 1:9.8. The cerebellar dimensions are 5.2 cm in width, 3.9 cm in height, and 4.9 cm in the rostrocaudal length. Its weight is 37.6 g, it forms a relation of 1:9.4 (10.8%) to the weight of the whole brain mass. The cerebellar lobulation of the donkey is as follows: The rostral lobe consists of median lobules (Lingula, Lobulus centralis, and Culmen) and lateral lobules (Vinculum lingulae, Ala lobuli centralis, and Lobulus quadrangularis). The caudal lobe consists of median lobules (Declive, Folium, Tuber, Pyramis, and Uvula)

Using art to understand the neuroanatomy of the cerebellum.

A hand drawn atlas of the embryonic chick cerebellum, created by a fourth-year post-secondary science student as part of her independent research project, served the dual goal of providing an accurate and accessible map of the anatomical structure of the chick cerebellum for learning embryonic neural development, while also highlighting the benefits of art and drawing as a means to aid understanding and appreciating complex, three-dimensional neuroanatomical structures. The cerebellum is a region of the brain that is convoluted and intricately folded and it can be challenging to connect two-di
