Cerebrovascular reactivity is blunted in young adults with major depressive disorder: The influence of current depressive symptomology.

BACKGROUND: In middle-aged adults with depression, cerebral vasodilatory reactivity is blunted; however, this has not been examined in treatment-naïve young adults with major depressive disorder (MDD). We tested the hypothesis that cerebrovascular reactivity would be blunted in young adults (18-30 yrs) with MDD compared to healthy non-depressed adults (HA) and would be attenuated to a greater extent in adults with symptomatic MDD (sMDD) compared to adults with MDD in remission (euthymic MDD; eMDD). METHODS: Sixteen adults with MDD [21±3yrs; n = 8 sMDD (6 women); n = 8 eMDD (5 women)] and 14 H

Cognitive Gains of Aerobic Exercise in Patients With Ischemic Cerebrovascular Disorder: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Background: Cognitive impairment has become an important problem in ischemic cerebrovascular disorder survivors as disease related deaths have been significantly reduced. Aerobic exercise, the most prevalent mode of physical activity, positively contributes to cognition in both healthy population and people with cognitive impairment. However, studies on its associations with cognitive gains in patients with ischemic cerebrovascular disease showed mixed findings. Objective: To explore the cognitive effects of aerobic exercise on ischemic cerebrovascular disorder survivors and investigate the po

The burden of mood-disorder/cerebrovascular disease comorbidity: essential neurobiology, psychopharmacology, and physical activity interventions.

Cardio-vascular diseases (CVDs) and CVD-related disorders (including cerebrovascular diseases; CBVDs) are a major public health concern as they represent the leading cause of mortality and morbidity in developed countries. Patients with CVDs and CBVDs co-morbid with mood disorders, especially bipolar disorder (BD) and major depressive disorder (MDD), suffer reduced quality-of-life and significant disability adjusted for years of life and mortality. The relationship between CVDs/CBVDs and mood disorders is likely to be bidirectional. Evidence for shared genetic risk of pathways involved in stre

Air pollution, neighbourhood walkability and cerebrovascular small vessel disease in patients with cardiovascular disorders along the heart-brain axis.

BACKGROUND: We investigated if ambient air pollution and neighbourhood walkability associate with presence and progression of cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD) in patients with cardiovascular disorders along the heart-brain axis. METHODS: Data from patients with heart failure, carotid occlusive disease, or vascular cognitive impairment (30% women; mean age 69.0 years) of the Heart-Brain Connection study were used. Brain parenchymal fraction (BPF), white matter hyperintensity fraction (WMH), cerebral blood flow (CBF), and incident vascular lesions were assessed with 3T brain MRI at baseline

Increased postoperative complication risk in elderly hip fracture patients with cerebrovascular disorders: A propensity score-matched nationwide cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Cerebrovascular disorders are known risk factors for hip fractures in the elderly. However, their impact on postoperative complications following hip fracture surgery remains insufficiently studied. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study utilized the Japanese Diagnosis Procedure Combination (DPC) database from April 2016 to March 2022. Patients aged ≥65 years who underwent surgical treatment for hip fractures were included. Individuals with cerebrovascular disorders were identified via ICD-10 codes (I60-I64). Propensity score matching (1:1) was performed based on age, sex, BMI,

Ischemic cardiopathy and other heart disorders: differences in risk of cerebrovascular disease and in its association with carotid obstruction.

A series of 1003 patients examined by cervical Doppler is reviewed, stressing differences between ischemic cardiopathies and other heart diseases as to the risk of carotid cerebrovascular disease (CVD) and its pathogenesis. The authors find that in ischemic heart disease the risk of stroke is almost entirely linked to severe carotid obstruction; in other cardiac disorders (rheumatic valvulopathies, arrhythmias etc.) this risk is independent from arterial damage, and the risk subsequent to an associated carotid stenosis does not differ from that of the general population.

[Incidence and characteristics of cerebrovascular disorders in children--critical analysis of 120 cases experienced at a children's general hospital].

Cerebrovascular disorders in children is a rare clinical entity, epidemiologic studies of which are very scarce in Japan. Hence this study analyzed 13,131 sick children admitted to Children's General Hospital in light of the incidence of cerebrovascular accident in children and its specific characteristics. In this paper, the cases of cerebral infarct are analyzed with special reference to their developmental outcomes. The results show that one hundred twenty children (0.85 percent of all sick children) had cerebrovascular disorders documented both in clinical pictures and CT scans. This numbe

Assessment of depressive disorders and states of anxiety in patients following cerebrovascular accidents in connection with health care provision.

OBJECTIVE: Anxiety and depression in patients following cerebrovascular accidents are among frequently occurring complications of the medical condition. The consequences affect personal, family, professional, and social life. They cause severe functional and cognitive impairments, limit the ability to perform normal daily activities, which can result in complete disability. The aim of the study was to monitor the occurrence of anxiety and depression in patients following cerebrovascular accidents hospitalized in neurological departments in the region of eastern Slovakia. METHODS: A total of 1

Amelioration of gait and balance disorders by rosuvastatin is associated with changes in cerebrovascular reactivity in older patients with hypertensive treatment.

To investigate the effect of rosuvastatin on gait and balance disorder progression and elucidate the role of cerebrovascular reactivity (CVR) on this effect. From April 2008 to November 2010, 943 hypertensive patients aged ≥60 years were enrolled from the Shandong area of China. Patients were randomized into rosuvastatin and placebo groups. Gait, balance, CVR, fall and stroke were assessed. During an average 72 months of follow-up, the decreasing trends for step length, step speed, and Berg balance scale scores and the increasing trends for step width and chair rising test were slower in the r

Cerebrovascular risk factors impact on brain atrophy and DTI-ALPS decrease in neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder.

BACKGROUND: Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) is an autoimmune astrocytopathy where disability is largely relapse-driven. Cerebrovascular risk factors (cVRFs) may exacerbate astrocytic and small-vessel injury. Therefore, we investigated their impact on MRI damage and disability in NMOSD. METHODS: Twenty-eight aquaporin 4 immunoglobulin G-positive NMOSD patients and 56 age- and sex-matched healthy controls (HC) underwent 3T brain and cervical MRI, cVRF and neurological assessment, including the Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS). Brain T2-hyperintense white matter lesion volu

Time to onset of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular outcomes after hypertensive disorders of pregnancy: a nationwide, population-based retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The increased maternal cardiocerebrovascular risk after a pregnancy complicated by hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, is well documented in the literature. Recent evidence has suggested a shorter timeframe for the development of these postnatal outcomes, which could have major clinical implications. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine the risk of and time to onset of maternal cardiovascular and cerebrovascular outcomes after a pregnancy complicated by hypertensive disorders of pregnancy. STUDY DESIGN: This study included 2,227,711 women, without preexisting chronic hyperte

[Care of patients with cerebrovascular disorders in the health service area of one of Warsaw's neurological hospital departments. I. Hospital admissions].

A group of patients hospitalized in the period from Oct 1 1978 to March 31 1980 for cerebrovascular disease was analysed in a Warsaw neurological hospital department. It was estimated that in this time period the annual number of patients admitted with acute and subacute episodes of cerebral circulatory failure was 90 per 100 thousand of the population in the catchment area of the hospital. About one-fifth of all admissions were due to haemorrhagic strokes, in 40% of cases ischaemic stroke was diagnosed, in 16% the character of stroke was unrecognized, 9% had transient brain ischaemia, and 15%

Multigene panel analysis of connective tissue and vascular genes in patients with a bleeding disorder of unknown cause or a cerebrovascular event.

BACKGROUND: Bleeding disorder of unknown cause (BDUC) refers to patients with a significant bleeding phenotype despite normal hemostatic evaluation. Cerebrovascular events (CVEs) are neurologic deficits from intracerebral hemorrhages to hemorrhagic or ischemic strokes. A multigene panel for inherited connective tissue and vascular disorders (BLEED_panel) may improve diagnostic assessment. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic yield and clinical value of the BLEED_panel in patients with BDUC or CVE and to characterize their bleeding manifestations. METHODS: In this retrospec

PFO-spectrum disorder: two different cerebrovascular diseases in patients with PFO as detected by AI brain imaging software.

BACKGROUND: Patent foramen ovale (PFO) is a prevalent cardiac remnant of fetal anatomy that may pose a risk factor for stroke in some patients, while others can present with asymptomatic white matter (WM) lesions. The current study aimed to test the hypothesis that patients with a PFO who have a history of stroke or transient ischemic attack, compared to those without such a history, have a different burden and distribution of cerebral WM hyperintensities. Additionally, we tested the association between PFO morphological characteristics and severity of shunt, and their impact on the occurrence
