Ultrasound-guided brachial plexus hydrodissection combined with acupotomy release for the treatment of cervical spondylotic radiculopathy: a multicenter retrospective study.

INTRODUCTION: The incidence of cervical spondylotic radiculopathy (CSR) remains high. Conventional conservative treatments have limited efficacy in relieving mechanical nerve root compression, while surgery is highly invasive. Both acupotomy release and ultrasound-guided brachial plexus hydrodissection are minimally invasive interventions for CSR. Nevertheless, high-level multicenter evidence-based medical data regarding the safety and efficacy of their combined application are still lacking. METHODS: This multicenter retrospective study enrolled 264 patients with CSR treated at four traditio

Comparison of Superficial Cervical Plexus Block and Intravenous Morphine for Analgesia in Tympanomastoid Surgeries: A Randomized Double-Blind Control Trial.

Background and aims Superficial cervical plexus block (SCPB) has been indicated for many neck surgeries including thyroid surgery, carotid endarterectomy, clavicular surgeries, and cochlear implantation, but has not been used perioperatively to provide analgesia for otological surgeries. We hypothesized that the use of this block is not inferior to the use of intravenous morphine for postoperative analgesia. The primary objective was to compare the postoperative Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) scores in those receiving SCPB versus morphine. Secondary objectives included intraoperative hemodynamic

Magnetic Resonance Imaging Features of Intravascular Osteosarcoma Affecting the Ventral Internal Vertebral Venous Plexus Causing Cervical Myelopathy in a Dog.

A 10.5-year-old male castrated Standard Poodle was referred for the evaluation of chronic C6-T2 myelopathy. MRI revealed a severe asymmetric enlargement of the ventral internal vertebral venous plexus, intervertebral/vertebral veins, and possibly the C6 basivertebral vein, with secondary mild spinal cord compression. Intravascular neoplasm, particularly lymphoma, with probable concurrent thrombus formation, was prioritized. Due to the poor prognosis and subsequent development of severe anemia and melena, the patient was euthanized. Necropsy and histopathology diagnosed cervical intravascular o

Effect of Bilateral Superficial Cervical Plexus Block on Postoperative Pain in Thyroid and Parathyroid Surgery: A Systemic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND Postoperative pain management following thyroid and parathyroid surgery is crucial for patient recovery and satisfaction. Bilateral superficial cervical plexus block (BSCPB) has gained attention as an effective regional anesthesia technique for managing postoperative pain. However, the overall effectiveness of BSCPB, particularly with adjuncts like dexmedetomidine or ropivacaine, remains unclear. This meta-analysis evaluated the efficacy of BSCPB in reducing postoperative pain in patients undergoing thyroid and parathyroid surgery, and assessed the impact of adjuncts on pain managem

The anatomy of the cutaneous branches of the cervical plexus and its clinical significance - The Great Auricular Nerve. A systematic review with meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: The great auricular nerve (GAN) is the largest cutaneous branch of the cervical plexus, playing a crucial role in head and neck surgeries, including aesthetic procedures, migraine treatment, and parotid gland interventions. Despite its clinical importance, anatomical descriptions of GAN remain inconsistent across studies. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This systematic review aims to provide a comprehensive, evidence-based analysis of GAN anatomy. A systematic search was conducted across major electronic databases to identify original studies reporting morphometric and branching data on GA

Superficial cervical plexus block on pain control in patients with temporomandibular joint internal derangement with headache: a retrospective cohort study.

IMPORTANCE: Prior evidence suggests that plasma and platelet transfusions from female and parous donors are associated with adverse clinical outcomes, which has led to the predominant use of male donors for plasma and platelets in many countries. However, studies on red blood cell transfusions have been conflicting. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether blood donor sex and parity affect mortality of patients undergoing transfusion with red blood cells. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study used nationwide blood bank and health register data in Sweden and involved a natural experimen

A prospective, randomized comparison between combined (deep and superficial) and superficial cervical plexus block with levobupivacaine for minimally invasive parathyroidectomy.

BACKGROUND: Minimally invasive parathyroidectomy (MIP) can be performed under cervical plexus block (CPB). Superficial CPB has been reported to be easier to perform with similar efficacy and less anesthesia-related complications than combined deep and superficial CPB. In this study, we compared the efficacy of superficial and combined (deep and superficial) CPB in patients undergoing MIP. METHODS: Forty-two patients with primary hyperparathyroidism due to a solitary adenoma were randomized to receive either a superficial (group superficial, n = 20) or a combined deep and superficial CPB (grou

Coaptation of the anterior rami of C-3 and C-4 to the upper trunk of the brachial plexus for cervical nerve root avulsion.

No surgical procedure has been available to repair cervical nerve root avulsion inside the spinal canal. Results with peripheral neurotization of denervated muscles have been discouraging. The authors have performed bridge-graft coaptation in three patients with C-5 and C-6 nerve root avulsion. The components of the coaptation included the anterior primary rami of C-3 and C-4 as the donor material, the entire upper trunk as the recipient, and the sural nerve graft as the bridge. This procedure resulted in restoration of motor function in the biceps and shoulder-girdle muscles and produced impr

Feasibility and Safety of Brachial Plexus Blocks in Patients With Cervical Spinal Cord Injury Undergoing Upper Extremity Surgery: Case Series.

Upper extremity reconstructive surgeries in patients with cervical spinal cord injury (SCI) can significantly improve function, but anesthesia planning and postoperative pain management are complex. Continuous peripheral nerve blocks (CPNBs) may offer intraoperative anesthesia and postoperative analgesia benefits, yet literature on their safety and patient tolerance in those with cervical SCI is limited. This case series reviewed the records of 18 patients with cervical SCI who underwent upper extremity tendon transfer, nerve transfer, or reconstructive surgery and received an ultrasound-guide

Analgesic effects of pectoserratus plane block and intermediate cervical plexus block for transaxillary endoscopic thyroidectomy: a prospective randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Transaxillary endoscopic thyroidectomy (TAET) is favored for its favorable cosmetic outcomes and the preservation of anterior cervical function. Despite these benefits, postoperative analgesia has traditionally relied on pharmacological interventions, and regional anesthetic procedures may be an alternative method. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of an ultrasound-guided pectoserratus plane block (PSPB) combined with an intermediate cervical plexus block (ICPB) for TAET. METHODS: Forty patients undergoing TAET were randomized into two groups: the nerve block group (N.=20)

Ultrasound-Guided Clavipectoral Fascial Plane Block With Intermediate Cervical Plexus Block for Midshaft Clavicular Surgery: A Prospective Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Regional anesthesia such as interscalene brachial plexus block (ISBPB) with intermediate cervical plexus block (ICPB) is generally a preferred choice for clavicular surgery. However, various studies have shown that these blocks, especially ISBPB, could cause phrenic nerve paralysis and decrease diaphragmatic motion. The study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of clavipectoral fascial plane block (CPB), an alternative technique to ISBPB, with ICPB, in reducing hemidiaphragmatic paralysis during midshaft clavicular surgery. METHODS: Forty patients scheduled for right midshaft clavicula

Acute respiratory failure after deep cervical plexus block for carotid endarterectomy as a result of bilateral recurrent laryngeal nerve paralysis.

We report about a case of acute respiratory distress (73-year-old female), which occurred minutes after a deep cervical plexus block (40 ml ropivacaine 0.5%) for carotid endarterectomy (CEA) and required immediate endotracheal intubation of the patient's trachea and consecutive mechanical ventilation. Subsequently, CEA was performed under general anaesthesia (TIVA) with continuous monitoring by somatosensory-evoked potentials. After a period of 14 hours, the endotracheal tube could be removed, the patient being in fair respiratory, cardiocirculatory and neurological conditions. Retrospectively

[Traumatic lesions of the brachial plexus. Evaluation of 144 cases studied using direct cervical myelography and non-ionic contrast media].

The authors report their experience in 144 patients with traumatic brachial plexus injury who underwent Direct Cervical Myelography (DCM). Sometimes the diagnostic investigation was completed by CT. Various myelographic patterns are described: pseudomeningocele, missing sheet of the root, scarring lesions. In 9 cases only, myelography was not sufficient to provide a complete diagnosis. The examination showed all plexus roots lacerated in 14 patients, a monoradicular lesion in 75 cases, and no lesion in 26 cases. Twenty-one out of the 26 negative cases were confirmed during surgery, while in 2

Impact of Ultrasound-guided Superficial Cervical Plexus Block on Early Postoperative Recovery in Patients Undergoing Microvascular Decompression: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Cervical plexus block (CPB) provides postoperative analgesia and reduces postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV), which are important for improving the quality of recovery after head and neck surgical procedures. This randomized controlled trial investigated the effect of superficial CPB on early postoperative quality of recovery in patients undergoing microvascular decompression (MVD). METHODS: Patients undergoing MVD for trigeminal neuralgia and hemifacial spasm were randomly assigned to receive superficial CPB or not (n = 30 per group). Ultrasound-guided superficial CPB was pe
