We have developed an afterloading procedure using Cs needle for tongue carcinoma. Seven patients with T1-2NO squamous cell carcinoma of the oral tongue were treated by this method at the Oita Medical University between 1988 and 1994. This method reduced the radiotherapist's radiation exposure and resulted in good local control in the primary site. We have found no other report of a case treated in this way. We emphasize that cesium therapy using an afterloading procedure is very useful in treating tongue carcinoma.

The antioxidant activity of oxolinic acid was studied in mongrel mice during the prolonged (6-8 hours) exposure to ionizing radiation. The drug administered before irradiation was shown to increase (by 7 to 33 per cent) the survival rate of mice. The effect was maximum after the subcutaneous injection. The results obtained on the effect of oxolinic acid on DNA synthesis by bone marrow karyocytes are submitted.

Following the Fukushima power plants accident on the 11th March 2011, the radioactivity monitoring programme at the Italian ENEA research centres was activated in order to detect the possible new input of radionuclides through atmospheric transport and precipitation. Iodine is intensely concentrated in the thyroid of animals, while 137Cs is not. In this study, 129I and 137Cs concentrations were determined in animal thyroids from selected areas during 1984-1991. Radiation-induced (137Cs-gamma-rays) aberrations in the first chromosome in human peripheral lymphocytes were investigated using FISH technique. It was shown that the most of detectable aberrations were translocations (about one half) often appearing with deletions: about 1/3 of the number of translocations were dicentrics; rings and insertions were rare.

At the Cancer Control Agency of British Columbia, 483 patients with cancer of the esophagus and cardia were seen from 1970-1980. Four hundred and one out of 483 (83%) had tumors larger than 5 cm (T2) and in 288/483 (60%) the disease had extended beyond the esophageal wall (T3). Human adenovirus type 2 (Ad 2) was irradiated with 137Cs gamma rays in the liquid state at 0 degree C. DNA breaks were correlated with the inactivation of several viral functions and compared to results obtained previously for irradiation of Ad 2 under frozen conditions at -75 degrees C. Irradiation at 0 degree C induced 170 +/- 20 single-strand breaks and 2.6 +/- 0.4 double-strand breaks/Gy/10(12) Da in the viral DNA.
