Considerations on combination therapies for disease modification in Parkinson's.

Clinical trials of monotherapies have failed to deliver disease modification for patients living with Parkinson’s disease, suggesting that a broader strategy for therapeutic development may be required. The medical research charity Cure Parkinson’s convened a workshop to discuss key considerations for developing rationally-designed combination therapies to slow progression of the condition. Here, we review combination therapies and share the conclusions of the meeting.

How can we make postnatal information resources more accessible to women experiencing challenges accessing healthcare? Report of a co-production project.

BACKGROUND: There is a serious and persistent gap in perinatal morbidity and mortality rates for women from minoritised groups and for those living in deprived areas in the UK. If symptoms can be recognised in time this enables them to be treated more effectively. There are numerous information resources of varying quality detailing symptoms of potential postnatal serious symptoms that inform women's decisions to seek care. However, cross cultural understanding, linguistic constraints and multiple challenges that act in a mutually reinforcing way can impact women's access to information in a f

Experiences of food insecurity among urban soup kitchen consumers: insights for improving nutrition and well-being.

Adequate nutrition is an essential determinant of health. Disadvantaged individuals within the cities of developed countries continue to have poor health, yet the role of food insecurity in such groups is poorly understood. This cross-sectional study describes such experiences among 22 randomly selected participants who participated in interviews at a charity-run soup kitchen in urban Sydney, Australia. Interviews explored four constructs of food insecurity (quantitative, qualitative, psychological, and social), identifying related barriers and coping strategies. Reliable access to food was li

The influence of belief in karma and guilt appeals on donation behavior: The moderating role of charitable organizational stereotypes.

Charitable giving represents a significant global economic force, making it crucial to understand the psychological drivers of donation behavior. While extensive research has examined various motivating factors, the complex interplay between donor beliefs, appeal strategies, and organizational characteristics remains underexplored. This research addresses this gap across two studies by investigating the interactive effects of belief in karma, charitable appeals, and organizational stereotypes on donation decisions. Study 1 first demonstrates that individuals with a stronger chronic belief in k

British Lung Foundation/United Kingdom Primary Immunodeficiency Network Consensus Statement on the Definition, Diagnosis, and Management of Granulomatous-Lymphocytic Interstitial Lung Disease in Common Variable Immunodeficiency Disorders.

A proportion of people living with common variable immunodeficiency disorders develop granulomatous-lymphocytic interstitial lung disease (GLILD). We aimed to develop a consensus statement on the definition, diagnosis, and management of GLILD. All UK specialist centers were contacted and relevant physicians were invited to take part in a 3-round online Delphi process. Responses were graded as Strongly Agree, Tend to Agree, Neither Agree nor Disagree, Tend to Disagree, and Strongly Disagree, scored +1, +0.5, 0, -0.5, and -1, respectively. Agreement was defined as greater than or equal to 80% co

Food-based interventions to mitigate household food insecurity in Canada: a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Household food insecurity (HFI) is a persistent and important public health and policy concern within Canada that continues to be widespread in the face of economic uncertainties and inflation. The objective of this systematic review was to synthesize the evidence on food-based interventions that could reduce HFI in Canada. METHODS: Studies that assessed a food-based intervention that might reduce food insecurity and measured HFI were included, regardless of whether that was the primary purpose of the study. Four databases were searched up to 19 February 2025. Screening of abstr

Willingness to help climate migrants: A survey experiment in the Korail slum of Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Bangladesh faces a severe rural to urban migration challenge, which is accentuated by climate change and the Rohingya crisis. These migrants often reside in urban slums and struggle to access public services, which are already short in supply for existing slum dwellers. Given the inadequacy of governmental efforts, nonprofits have assumed responsibility for providing essential services such as housing, healthcare, and education. Would local slum-dwellers in Dhaka be willing to support such nonprofits financially? We deploy an in-person survey experiment with three frames (generic migrants, cli

A Longitudinal Study of Multidimensional Prosocial Behavior During Adolescence.

This study examines the distinct developmental trajectories of prosocial and rebellious behaviors in adolescence. Using data from an accelerated three-wave project (2018-2022) among adolescents aged 9-22 years (N = 142, 63% female, middle-high SES, white European descent), trajectories of prosocial actions toward friends and peers, prosocial tendencies across multiple situations, giving to charities, and general social value orientation were examined. By examining age-, puberty-, and hormonal-related trajectories, the study demonstrates increases in prosocial behaviors to friends and peers, di

The death of a baby before, during or shortly after birth: good practice from the parents' perspective.

This chapter is adapted from Pregnancy Loss and the Death of a Baby: Guidelines for Professionals (3rd edition) by Judith Schott, Alix Henley and Nancy Kohner, published by Sands (the UK Stillbirth and Neonatal Death charity) in 2007. The article highlights those aspects of care given to families facing perinatal loss that parents value and those that add, often inadvertently, to their distress. It is based on research findings and on views expressed by parents.

A collaborative genetic carrier screening model for the British Ashkenazi Jewish community.

We present a unique model of a British genetic carrier screening programme for individuals with Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry that exemplifies a partnership between a publicly funded healthcare service (the NHS) and a charity, Jnetics. This model provides affordable access to carrier screening for severe autosomal recessive diseases increased in this community. Prior to the development of this programme, the British healthcare system only provided Tay Sachs' screening for this community, leaving them at higher risk of having a child with a serious autosomal recessive disease. The Jnetics screening

The impact of well-developed preventative strategies on the eradication of head lice.

In the 1970s Donaldson applied the principles of infectious disease surveillance to pediculosis capitis infestation with head lice. This provided a lasting insight into an effective strategy for prevention. Research in Teesside, UK, proved that the first step in breaking the chain of transmission is the engagement of parents in an intensive detection/treatment campaign. United action halved the infestation rate, even though failing lindane treatments were in use. Subsequently although effective malathion treatment was introduced, it became clear that the late detection of light cases of head l
