The Child Behavior Checklist as a Screening Instrument for PTSD in Refugee Children.

Thousands of refugees who have entered Europe experienced threatening conditions, potentially leading to post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which has to be detected and treated early to avoid chronic manifestation, especially in children. We aimed to evaluate and test suitable screening tools to detect PTSD in children. Syrian refugee children aged 4-14 years were examined using the PTSD-semi-structured interview, the Kinder-DIPS, and the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL). The latter was evaluated as a potential screening tool for PTSD using (i) the CBCL-PTSD subscale and (ii) an alternative

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Anger and Aggression in a Child With Tourette's Syndrome.

Tourette syndrome (TS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that is characterized by vocal and motor tics. Children with TS often also exhibit disruptive behaviors including sudden anger outbursts accompanied by verbal and physical aggression. This case study presents cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) treatment of anger and aggression in a 9-year-old girl with TS, co-occurring generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD). At initial assessment, tics were well-managed and disruptive behavior concerns, including near-daily tantrums lasting 20 min to 1 hr, were primary

Intimate Partner Violence and Child Behavioral Problems in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Research in high-income countries has repeatedly demonstrated that intimate partner violence (IPV) experienced by women negatively affects the health and behavior of children in their care. However, there is little research on the topic in lower- and middle-income countries. The population-based Asenze Study gathered data on children and their caregivers in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. This data analysis explores the association of caregiver IPV on child behavior outcomes in children <12 years old and is the first such study in Africa. METHODS: This population-based study was set

FAMILY CONFLICT MODERATES EARLY PARENT-CHILD BEHAVIORAL TRANSACTIONS.

The reciprocal transactions that shape early parent-child relationships are influenced by contextual stress, such as family conflict. Although family conflict is a salient stressor to the family system, few studies have considered how parent-child transactions vary according to exposure to family conflict. The present study examined how family conflict alters early parent-child behavioral transactions. We utilized three waves of data from a multisite longitudinal study of low-income families (N = 2, 876), child age 14 months, 24 months, and 36 months, to identify behavioral transactions of pos

Paternal incarceration and child-reported behavioral functioning at age 9.

Within the last few decades our understanding of the importance of non-cognitive skills for socioeconomic success has grown along with our knowledge of the deleterious impacts of paternal incarceration for child wellbeing. Given the importance of early skills and that elementary-aged children constitute the majority of children with incarcerated parents, understanding the connection between paternal incarceration and the socio-emotional component of children's non-cognitive development is pressing. Using matching models, data from the newest wave of the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Stu

Profiles and predictors of behavioral resilience among children in child welfare.

Children living in out-of-home care have experienced a multitude of adversities, often resulting in compromised functioning. The current study used Ontario Looking After Children (OnLAC) project data to estimate developmental trajectories of behavioral outcomes (i.e., conduct and emotional problems) over a 4-year period (i.e., ages 6-10 to 9-13) in 313 children living in out-of-home care. Predictors measured at baseline (e.g., sex) and across the subsequent 4-year period (e.g., parenting practices) were also investigated. Findings indicated that 64.2% and 58.6% followed resilient trajectories

The influence of narrative practice techniques on child behaviors in forensic interviews.

During investigations of child sexual abuse, forensic interviewers must maintain a delicate balance of providing support for the child while collecting forensic evidence about the abuse allegation required for credible evidence for court purposes. The use of narrative practice techniques can achieve both goals by creating conditions that facilitate the possibility that children will feel safe enough to provide detailed descriptions of the alleged abuse. This article reports findings from an evaluation of a change in practice using the CornerHouse Forensic Interview Protocol in which narrative

Multilevel correlates of behavioral resilience among children in child welfare.

Resilience, defined as positive adaptation and functioning following exposure to significant adversity, is an important topic of investigation in child welfare. The current study used data from the Ontario Looking After Children (OnLAC) project to estimate the prevalence of behavioral resilience (i.e., lower frequency of conduct and emotional problems, higher frequency of prosocial behavior) in 531 5-9 year olds living in out-of-home care, and to determine how behaviorally-resilient children are functioning in other domains (i.e., peer relationships and academic performance). Furthermore, hier

Use of a child behavior checklist in the psychosocial assessment of children with epilepsy.

Children with epilepsy are faced with many of the same psychosocial stressors as other chronically ill children, and a proper assessment is vital. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the Child Behavior Checklist of Achenbach and Edelbrock could be used as a practical and objective tool for evaluating the psychosocial needs of children with epilepsy. Thirty-eight children were randomly selected from the Neurology outpatient clinic at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario. Questionnaires were completed by the mothers during their waiting period. Results demonstrated the highe

The impact of contamination bias when replicating maltreatment effects on child behavior problems.

BACKGROUND: Contamination, when members of a comparison condition receive or are exposed to a treatment under investigation, can bias the direction, statistical significance, and magnitude of treatment effects. OBJECTIVE: This pre-registered study examined whether contamination biased estimates when replicating child maltreatment effects on two established outcomes, externalizing and internalizing behavior problems. METHODS: A multi-wave, U.S. national probability sample of children and families involved with child protective services (N = 4000; Age = 0-17.5; Sex = 48% Female; Race = 60% Whi

Artificial intelligence in child nutrition and eating behavior: from prediction to gastronomic mediation.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is entering child nutrition through dietary assessment, malnutrition forecasting, clinical decision support, meal recommendation, conversational interventions, and food-environment monitoring. The consequences of these applications converge in everyday eating. This Mini Review synthesizes evidence on how AI measures nutritional states and mediates food choice, communication, sensory acceptance, family practice, and digital exposure. The evidence supports two connected functions. As nutritional intelligence, AI converts clinical, dietary, and environmental data into

Intergenerational trauma, parenting, and child behavior among African American families living in poverty.

OBJECTIVE: Limited research has documented the continuity of trauma exposure between parents and young children and the relation between intergenerational trauma and maternal parenting and child outcomes. This study examined intergenerational trauma among African American families from low-income backgrounds and its relation to parenting processes and children's behavior. METHOD: Participants represent a subsample of 157 African American mothers and their 4- to 7-year-old children in an urban prekindergarten program. Researchers collected data on maternal and child exposure to trauma, demogra

The impact of parental psychological distress on child behavior issues in hospitalized children.

Child hospitalization has a negative impact on both children and parents' psychological well-being. Although prior studies in the general context demonstrated a favorable link between parental psychological distress and child behavior problems, research in the hospital situation was restricted. The purpose of this study was to see if parental psychological distress has an effect on child behavior problems in hospitalized children in Indonesia. This cross-sectional study included 156 parents who were recruited from four pediatric wards using a convenience sampling method between August 17 and D

Understanding the Offline Criminal Behavior of Individuals Who Live Stream Child Sexual Abuse.

Live streaming of child sexual abuse (CSA) involves the procurement and viewing of sexual abuse of children across the internet in real time, in exchange for money. These offenses leave little tangible evidence of the offense beyond a financial transaction, and metadata relating to the live-streaming session. This research analyzed the demographic, criminal history, and financial transaction characteristics of 209 individuals who live streamed child sexual abuse. A machine learning clustering technique was implemented to consider whether there were sub-groups present among these offenders, and

Psychopathic traits mediate the association of serotonin transporter genotype and child externalizing behavior.

Although the promoter polymorphism of the serotonin transporter (5-HTTLPR) gene is associated with externalizing behavior, its mediating pathways are unknown. Given their sensitivity to serotonin neurotransmission and unique association with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), we tested callous-unemotional (CU) traits and narcissism as separate mediators of the association of 5-HTTLPR with ADHD and ODD. We evaluated 209 5-9 year-old children with and without ADHD at baseline; approximately 2 years later (i.e., Wave 2), parents and teachers s

MATERNAL DEPRESSION AND CHILD OXYTOCIN RESPONSE; MODERATION BY MATERNAL OXYTOCIN AND RELATIONAL BEHAVIOR.

BACKGROUND: Maternal postpartum depression (PPD) carries long-term detrimental effects on children's well-being, yet the mechanisms of transmission remain unclear. One possible pathway of vulnerability involves the oxytocinergic (OT) system, which is transferred from mother to child via sensitive caregiving and is disrupted in PPD. METHOD: A large birth cohort (N = 1983) of women were repeatedly assessed for depression from birth to 6 years. Utilizing an extreme case design, two matched cohorts were formed; mothers chronically depressed from birth to 6 years and nondepressed controls (N = 97,

Parenting Behavior Mediates the Intergenerational Association of Parent and Child Offspring ADHD Symptoms.

Although there are likely to be multiple mechanisms underlying parent attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms as a key risk factor for offspring ADHD, potential explanatory factors have yet to be reliably identified. Given that parent ADHD symptoms independently predict parenting behavior and child ADHD symptoms, we tested whether individual differences in multiple dimensions of positive and negative parenting behavior (i.e., corporal punishment, inconsistent discipline, positive parenting behavior, observed negative talk, and observed praise) mediated the association between

Maternal IQ, child IQ, behavior, and achievement in urban 5-7 year olds.

In one study of children in 27 families with maternal retardation, those children with higher intelligence quotient (IQ) were more likely to have multiple behavior problems than those with lower IQ. If true, this result would affect clinical practice, but it has not been replicated. Because the setting of the initial observation is similar to the setting of childhood lead poisoning, we attempted a replication using data from the Treatment of Lead-Exposed Children (TLC) study, in which 780 children aged 12-33 mo with blood lead levels 20-44 microg/dL were randomized to either succimer treatment

Parental cognitions and satisfaction: relationship to aggressive parental behavior in child physical abuse.

There are limited data on cognitions and satisfaction with the child in parents who have physically abused their children. Therefore, we examined convergence among these constructs, and their relationships to parental aggression among participants in a treatment study for child physical abuse. Data were examined at two time points 12 weeks apart. The cognitions (unrealistic expectations of the child, perception of lack of control, and hostile attribution bias) and satisfaction with the child showed little convergence. Only parental satisfaction correlated significantly with aggressive parental
