Psychosocial functioning in children with neurodevelopmental disorders and externalizing behavior problems.

PURPOSE: This study examines psychosocial functioning in children with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) and/or externalizing behavior problems (EBPs) as compared to children with neither condition. METHODS: The longitudinal sample, drawn from the Canadian National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth, included children who were 6 to 9 years old in Cycle 1 who were followed-up biennially in Cycles 2 and 3 (N = 3476). The associations between NDDs and/or EBPs, child and family socio-demographic characteristics and parenting behaviors (consistency and ineffective parenting), were examine

Strong Associations Between Childhood Victimization and Community Violence in Male Forensic Mental Health Patients.

Background: Childhood abuse and neglect increase the risk of both mental disorders and violent behavior. Associations between child relational adversities and violent behavior have not been extensively investigated in forensic mental health settings. We asked whether the extent of child adversities predicts the extent of violence in the community in forensic mental health patients. Methods: We included 52 male patients at a medium security forensic mental health ward, with diagnoses of predominantly paranoid schizophrenia and other schizophrenia and psychotic disorders. Seventy-five percent ha

[Stigmatization of language impaired children from the parents' perspective].

Stigmatization can strongly affect the social integration of children and adolescents with developmental and behavioral disorders. The goal of the study was to investigate negative and positive labeling of speech-language impaired children as perceived by their parents. We analyzed 386 parental questionnaires on stigmatization by and support from other children, family members and other adults. Half of the parents reported stigmatization of their child. They perceived negative labeling and exclusion most frequently in the child's peer group, but also among family members. Support was more comm

Prenatal maternal stress, child internalizing and externalizing symptoms, and the moderating role of parenting: findings from the Norwegian mother, father, and child cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have examined how parenting influences the associations between prenatal maternal stress and children's mental health. The objectives of this study were to examine the sex-specific associations between prenatal maternal stress and child internalizing and externalizing symptoms, and to assess the moderating effects of parenting behaviors on these associations. METHODS: This study is based on 15 963 mother-child dyads from the Norwegian Mother, Father, and Child Cohort Study (MoBa). A broad measure of prenatal maternal stress was constructed using 41 self-reported items

Effects of maternal mental retardation and poverty on intellectual, academic, and behavioral status of school-age children.

The impact of low maternal IQ and poverty was examined through comparison of 27 school-age children of mothers with mild mental retardation to 25 similarly impoverished children of mothers without mental retardation. The children whose mothers had mental retardation had lower IQs and academic achievement and more behavior problems. Not one child with a mother who had mental retardation was problem-free. Boys were affected more severely than were girls. Quality of the home environment and maternal social supports were lower in the group with maternal mental retardation; both measures were negat

Behavioral outcomes of extremely low birth weight children at age 8 years.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the prevalence of behavioral problems and symptomatology suggestive of Autism and Asperger's disorders at age 8 years among extremely low birth weight (ELBW, <1 kg) children, born 1992 through 1995. METHOD: Parent reports of the behavior of 219 ELBW (mean birth weight, 810 g; gestational age 26 weeks) were compared with 176 normal birth weight children of similar maternal sociodemographic status, sex, and age. Behavior was assessed via the Child Symptom Inventory that includes both Symptom Severity Scores and scores meeting DSM-IV criteria for disorders. RESULTS: ELBW

Parent versus teacher report of daytime behavior in snoring children.

PURPOSE: Problematic behavior is widely reported in children with sleep-disordered breathing (SDB). Daytime behavior is an important component in the evaluation of clinical history in SDB; however, there is a reliance on parental report alone, and it is unclear whether reports by teachers will aid diagnosis. METHODS: We assessed sleep and behavior reported by both parents and teachers in 19 children with SDB and 27 non-snoring controls. All children were screened for prior diagnoses of other medical and/or behavior and learning disorders and underwent polysomnography and both parental and tea

A transactional model of oppositional behavior: underpinnings of the Collaborative Problem Solving approach.

Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) refers to a recurrent pattern of developmentally inappropriate levels of negativistic, defiant, disobedient, and hostile behavior toward authority figures. ODD is one of the most common (and debilitating) comorbid disorders within Tourette's disorder (TD). Diverse psychosocial treatment approaches have been applied to children's ODD-related behaviors. In this paper, the authors articulate a transactional developmental conceptualization of oppositional behavior and describe a cognitive-behavioral model of intervention-called collaborative problem solving (CPS

Comorbidity and phenomenology of bipolar disorder in children with ADHD.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the comorbidity of bipolar disorder (BPD) in children with ADHD and to study the psychopathological profile of ADHD children with and without mania. METHOD: A total of 100 children with ADHD were assessed with a semistructured diagnostic interview and questionnaires of mania, ADHD, and general psychopathology. RESULTS: 8% of children met criteria for BPD and 6% for BPD-not specified. ADHD children with bipolar spectrum disorder had greater comorbidity with disruptive behavior disorders and scored higher on the Young Mania Rating Scales and on the Child Behavior Checklist

Complex Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in a 4-Year-Old With Repaired Critical Congenital Heart Disease and Autism Spectrum Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Congenital heart disease (CHD) is a risk factor for developmental delay and for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The Cardiac Neurodevelopmental Outcome Collaborative has developed recommendations for ongoing monitoring of this at-risk population to be able to detect developmental, learning, and behavioral concerns, as they become apparent as a child ages. CASE PRESENTATION: A 4-year-old boy with tetralogy of Fallot with a ventricular septal defect repaired in infancy was followed periodically in the cardiac neurodevelopmental follow-up clinic and diagnosed with aut

Parenting stress and its relationship to the behavior of children with Joubert syndrome.

This study describes the relationship between parenting stress and behavior in children with Joubert syndrome, a rare genetic neurodevelopmental disorder. Parents (N = 43) reported severely impaired child adaptive behaviors. Most children did not show maladaptive behaviors, but a subset of approximately 20% displayed significant problems in areas such as inattention, overactivity, social withdrawal, and atypical behaviors. Mothers (59%) and fathers (40%) reported elevated levels of parenting stress. A hierarchical regression, including demographics, adaptive behavior, and maladaptive behavior,

[Reliability of the Child Behavior Checklist in a population of 6 to 8-year-old special education students].

66 children attending first grade at a special school for educationally subnormal children were examined medically and psychologically. Classification was done according to ICD-10. In addition, the parents were asked to rate their children's behavior with the "Child Behavior Checklist" by Achenbach and Edelbrock. The most common symptoms rated in this group of 6- to 8-year-old children were lack of concentration, speech and language problems, hyperactivity, demand for attention and arguing. The mean total score (cut-off score: 30) and the number of crucial items (cut-off score: at least two cr

The Effects of Young Children's Callous-Unemotional Traits on Behaviorally Observed Outcomes in Standard and Technology-Enhanced Behavioral Parent Training.

Behavioral Parent Training (BPT) remains the current standard of care for early onset behavior disorders (BD); however, problem behaviors characterized by relatively high callous unemotional (CU) traits are linked to poorer treatment outcomes, highlighting the need for novel interventions. This study examined the relation of baseline child CU traits to changes in observed parent and child (3 to 8 years old) behavior in 101 families with low-income randomized to either a standard (Helping the Noncompliant Child, HNC) or technology-enhanced BPT program (TE-HNC). Assessments occurred at baseline,

Efficacy of individualized social competence training for children with oppositional defiant disorders/conduct disorders: a randomized controlled trial with an active control group.

Patient-focused cognitive-behavioral therapy in children with aggressive behavior, which uses group-based social skills training, has resulted in significant reductions in behavioral problems, with effect sizes in the small-to-medium range. However, effects of individually delivered treatments and effects on aggressive behavior and comorbid conditions rated from different perspectives, child functional impairment, child quality of life, parent-child relationship, and parental psychopathology have rarely been assessed. In a randomized controlled trial, 91 boys aged 6-12 years with a diagnosis o

Parental responses to positive and negative emotions in anxious and nonanxious children.

This study examined the role of multiple children's emotions and parental anxiety during parent-child interactions of anxiety disordered (AD) and nonanxious (NA) children ages 7 to 13 years. Families (mother, father, child) each discussed three recent and real separate situations in which the child experienced anxiety, anger, and happiness. Results revealed significant differences in behavior between parents of AD and NA children. Maternal behavior, but not paternal behavior, was related to the emotion the child was experiencing. Mothers of AD children displayed greater intrusive involvement t

Maternal postnatal bonding disorder and emotional/behavioral problems in preschool children: The Tohoku Medical Megabank Project Birth and Three-Generation Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Although there is evidence that maternal perinatal mental disorders are associated with emotional/behavioral problems in children, the long-term impacts of postnatal bonding disorder remain unclear. We aimed to examine the associations between maternal postnatal bonding disorder and emotional/behavioral problems in preschool children. METHODS: We analyzed data from 7220 mother-child pairs who participated in the Tohoku Medical Megabank Project Birth and Three-Generation Cohort Study. Maternal bonding disorder was defined as Mother-to-Infant Bonding Scale score ≥5 at 1 month after

[Severe neuropsychiatric disorders in an asthmatic infant who received repeated glucocorticoid treatment: the importance of associated factors].

Children and adults may experience neuropsychiatric disorders during glucocorticoid treatment, most of which are reversible upon drug withdrawal. Whereas the occurrence of these disorders is well documented in teenagers, only a few cases have been reported in children under 3 years of age. We report on severe neuropsychiatric disorders that occurred in a 27-month-old child during glucocorticoid treatment for asthma that did not regress when treatment was stopped. The psychiatric symptoms suggested autism and were associated with deterioration of the child-mother relationship. This led the medi

Oppositional defiant disorder: information for school nurses.

Oppositional defiant disorder, one of the disruptive behavior disorders, has far-reaching consequences for the individual, family, school, community, and society. Early recognition allows interventions geared toward promotion of prosocial behaviors, possibly halting progression to the more deviant conduct disorder. Awareness of this disorder and associated comorbidities is the first step that enables the school nurse to use assessment techniques and to assist in planning of interventions for the child. Children at risk often show tendencies toward oppositional defiant disorder as early as pres

Stool-toileting refusal in preschool age children: A follow-up study.

BACKGROUND: Stool-toileting refusal in preschool-aged children is a significant issue that strongly impacts both the child and the family, signaling a challenging period. We investigated the relationships between temperament, traumatic life events, parental sociodemographic characteristics, and psychological burdens and these behaviors. Our goal was to identify factors that may contribute to the chronicity of this stool-toileting refusal behavior. METHODS: Conducted as a single-center, prospective, controlled design, the research involved children exhibiting stool-toileting refusal for at lea

The developmental course of illicit substance use from age 12 to 22: links with depressive, anxiety, and behavior disorders at age 18.

BACKGROUND: Previous theory and research suggest links between substance use and externalizing behavior problems, but links between substance use and internalizing problems are less clear. The present study sought to understand concurrent links among diagnoses of substance use disorders, internalizing disorders, and behavior disorders at age 18 as well as developmental trajectories of illicit substance use prior to and after this point.
