Citation accuracy in American Psychological Association amicus curiae briefs.

For over 60 years, the American Psychological Association (APA) has submitted amicus curiae (friend of the court) briefs with the aim of informing the courts about relevant scientific findings that may otherwise be absent from, or misrepresented in, the trial records of court cases. To achieve this aim, it is important that the summarized information accurately reflects the relevant scientific literature. The present study investigated the accuracy of the citations to empirical research in the 16 most recent APA amicus briefs by comparing the accuracy of the citing claims within these briefs t

Intimate Partner Violence Exposure and Adolescent Mental Health Outcomes: The Mediating Role of Housing Insecurity.

The present study investigated pathways from childhood exposure to mothers' intimate partner violence (IPV) to adolescent depression and anxiety. Further, the study examined whether housing insecurity mediated the link from IPV exposure to mental health outcomes. Data came from the Years 5, 9 and 15 interviews of the Fragile Families and Child Well-being Study; the analytic sample was limited to mothers with at least partial custody of children (N = 2,425). Structural equation modeling with latent variables investigated research questions. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) identified observed

"The system's not getting my grandchild": A qualitative study of caregiver relationship formation for children born to incarcerated mothers.

Women who give birth during their incarceration in most states in the US are separated from their newborns, who are placed with non-maternal caregivers. Infants of incarcerated mothers are a highly vulnerable population for which caregiving relationships may be particularly important for their wellbeing. Despite this, incarcerated mothers may be responsible for selecting a caregiver with no formal guidance. However, this process is poorly understood. The goal of this study was to understand how families form caregiving relationships during a mother's incarceration in state prisons in Georgia.

Prevention and drug treatment.

Evidence linking alcohol and other drug abuse with child maltreatment, particularly neglect, is strong. But does substance abuse cause maltreatment? According to Mark Testa and Brenda Smith, such co-occurring risk factors as parental depression, social isolation, homelessness, or domestic violence may be more directly responsible than substance abuse itself for maltreatment. Interventions to prevent substance abuse-related maltreatment, say the authors, must attend to the underlying direct causes of both. Research on whether prevention programs reduce drug abuse or help parents control substan

What matters? What does not? Five perspectives on the association between marital transitions and children's adjustment.

This article presents an analysis of 5 views of factors that contribute to the adjustment of children in divorced families or stepfamilies. These perspectives are those that emphasize (a) individual vulnerability and risk; (b) family composition; (c) stress, including socioeconomic disadvantage; (d) parental distress; and (e) disrupted family process. It is concluded that all of these factors contribute to children's adjustment in divorced and remarried families and that a transactional model examining multiple trajectories of interacting risk and protective factors is the most fruitful in pre

Alcohol use, injuries, and prenatal visits during three successive pregnancies among American Indian women on the Northern Plains who have children with fetal alcohol syndrome or incomplete fetal alcohol syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of the study was to compare three sequential pregnancies of American Indian women who have children with FAS or children with incomplete FAS with women who did not have children with FAS. METHODS: Two retrospective case-control studies were conducted of Northern Plains American Indian children with fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) (Study 1) or incomplete FAS (Study 2) in 1981-1993. Three successive pregnancies ending in live births of 43 case mothers who had children with FAS, and 35 case mothers who had children with incomplete FAS were compared to the pregnancies of 86

You don't need criminal law to make cops: Reading carceral care work into reproductive healthcare policies in Vancouver.

This paper presents a critical review of the health and social policy regulating clinicians in Vancouver Canada. For this review the authors investigated how policy embeds carceral thinking in healthcare delivery dispensed in the lead up to, during, and up to one year after pregnancy, including reproductive technologies that facilitate conception, planned and emergency abortion, labour and birth, and child welfare services. Clinical care in all these areas becomes carceral when clinicians are implicated in work that coerces, criminalizes, or punishes patients. State investments in control and

Childhood emotional abuse.

BACKGROUND: The assessment and management of childhood emotional abuse is of increasing importance in psychiatric practice. At present there are no consensus views about the definition of emotional abuse and information from research is limited. METHOD: Information about emotional abuse from the medical, psychological, social science and legal literature is summarised. Definitions and proposed mechanisms of damage are discussed. Current research data and an overview of childhood and adult sequelae are presented. Proposals for clinical and medico-legal practice are made. RESULTS: Theoretical

The parental paradox.

Parenthood is in turmoil: On the one hand many of the parental tasks have been taken over by social institutions and on the other psychological aspects of the parent-child relation are emphasized. We see three important developments: The relationship between parents and children has been democratized, the psychological and juridical position has been acknowledged and the social check on parental behaviour has changed dramatically. In this dynamic field, children's rights have risen as a new way of solving family problems. Rights for children create new possibilities for recognizing the growing

The devolution of eugenic practices: Sexual and reproductive health and oppression of people with intellectual disability.

Early 20th century eugenicists propagated a system of ideas, values and dispositions that constituted adults with intellectual disability as the antithesis of the paradigmatic citizen, and a biological threat to society. The eugenic schema was encoded in sex-segregated institutionalization and, in many places, forced sterilization. These eugenic practices are no longer sanctioned. However, eugenic practices did not disappear. In this paper we argue that the eugenic schema is now encoded and purveyed through a multiplicity of social arrangements and practices that deny adults with intellectual

Abuse of alcohol, drugs and tobacco during pregnancy--consequences for the child.

There is an increasing awareness that alcohol and drug abuse and smoking are not only harmful for the consumer but will also, when taken by a pregnant woman, adversely affect her unborn child. The consequence of the abuse will result from a combination of specific toxic effects of abusing substances and a nonspecific effect from the often very unstable environment of an alcohol- or drug-dependent mother. Poor prenatal care is a common finding in alcohol and drug abuse leading to a high incidence of complications during pregnancy and delivery including premature labor and small-for-gestational-

Factors predisposing women and children to indoor air pollution in rural villages, Western Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Indoor air pollution (IAP) remains a major global public health hazard more so in developing countries where use of fossil fuels is still very common. However, despite the popularity of kerosene and fuelwood as energy sources among many households in the Sub-Saharan Africa, little is known about their health effects and the predisposing factors particularly on those with direct exposure. This study sought to relate indoor air pollution exposure to self-reported prevalence of respiratory outcomes including (sputum production, congestion, breathing difficulties, eye problems, fatigue

Time-sensitive healthcare guidelines for youth with chronic diseases in custody: gaps in care.

On May 9th, 2023, a U.S. Border Patrol detained a family of five near Brownsville, TX. During processing, one of the family members, an eight-year-old girl, ADRA, was noted to have sickle cell anemia and a heart disease condition. Five days after they arrived at the Donna Facility, on May 14th, ADRA displayed symptoms, including abdominal pain and fever, and tested positive for Influenza A. She was administered medication and transferred to a designated isolation unit at the Harlingen Border Patrol Station. Despite her deteriorating condition and her mother's urgent requests for medical interv

Multiple marginalized identities: A qualitative exploration of intersectional perinatal experiences of birthing people of color with substance use disorder in Massachusetts.

INTRODUCTION: Racial and ethnic inequities persist in receipt of prenatal care, mental health services, and addiction treatment for pregnant and postpartum individuals with substance use disorder (SUD). Further qualitative work is needed to understand the intersectionality of racial and ethnic discrimination, stigma related to substance use, and gender bias on perinatal SUD care from the perspectives of affected individuals. METHODS: Peer interviewers conducted semi-structured qualitative interviews with recently pregnant people of color with SUD in Massachusetts to explore the impact of inte

Victims of violence: an Asian scenario.

The term 'violence' is difficult to define. Aggressive behaviour with actual use of physical force may result in some form of physical and emotional trauma to an individual and this could be considered as violence against the person. The trauma may range from minimal physical injury to death. It is also relevant to note that in some jurisdictions if members of the law enforcement agencies with appropriate authority resort to certain acts of 'violence' for lawful purposes, then such acts of violence may be excluded from this category. However, if the law enforcement personnel exceed their limit

Mental health and parenting demands among grandparent caregivers of young U.S. children.

Substance abuse epidemics and changes in incarceration and foster care policies have recently placed more young children in grandparent custody. Grandmothers bear much of this caregiving responsibility. Our objective was to compare grandparent caregivers of preschool-aged children (grandparent(s) only or in multigenerational households) to parent caregivers, by caregiver sex, in their mental health, available emotional support, and capacity to manage parenting demands. Using U.S. National Survey of Children's Health data (2016-2019), we used survey-weighted logistic regression models adjusted

Maltreatment and Dental Trauma in Preschool Children: A Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Child maltreatment (CM) has been associated with adverse oral health outcomes during childhood. However, few studies have investigated the relationship between CM and dental trauma (DT) in the primary dentition. AIM: To evaluate the association between CM and DT at 4 years of age. DESIGN: The sample comprised 4275 children from the 2015 Pelotas Birth Cohort Study, southern Brazil. Overall CM from birth to age 4, as well as specific types of maltreatment ("physical abuse," "sexual abuse," "emotional abuse," "neglect," and "custodial interference"), were assessed using the Juvenile

Health care and social justice implications of incarceration for pregnant people who use drugs.

The experiences of and care for pregnant, incarcerated people with substance use disorders represent a convergence of numerous clinical, historical, racialized, legal, and gendered factors. Understanding how these forces shape how they became enmeshed in the criminal legal system as well as the context of the care they do or do not receive while in custody is essential for promoting equitable maternal health care. In this review, we describe the prevalence of SUD among pregnant people behind bars, the health care landscape of incarceration, access to treatment for opioid use disorder for incar

[Rejection of closed placement in youth welfare: Two case reports and a discussion of needs and effectiveness].

Rejection of closed placement in youth welfare: Two case reports and a discussion of needs and effectiveness Abstract. Locked-door residential care in the custody of adolescents with severe behavioral problems has been a controversial subject in Germany for many decades. Sometimes the debate is held on an ideological level, sometimes it concerns the legal and ethical legitimacy of such actions, but it always is about providing the best care possible for severely disturbed adolescents with attachment disorder, severe conduct disorder, and psychosocial disintegration. Because of differing viewpo
