General Parenting Strategies: Practical Suggestions for Common Child Behavior Issues.

Parents often seek guidance from physicians on child behavior problems. Questions may range from general parenting strategies to managing specific child behaviors. Physicians and their staff can identify problematic parent-child interactions or behaviors within the office setting and assist parents by providing effective monitoring tools for behavior problems. Effective strategies for influencing a child's behavior include positive reinforcement to increase appropriate behavior, extinction (planned ignoring) for most low-level problematic behaviors, and time-out from reinforcement for more pro

Relationships between parent feeding behaviors and parent and child characteristics in Brazilian preschoolers: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Eating habits formed in early childhood are influenced by parental feeding behaviors, warranting investigation of predictors and correlates of parent feeding. We aimed to describe relationships between parental feeding practices and parent and child characteristics in a sample of Brazilian preschoolers. METHODS: Four hundred and two parents of preschoolers enrolled in private schools of São Paulo and Campinas, Brazil, completed a Brazilian version of the Comprehensive Feeding Practices Questionnaire, as well as questions about parental attitudes, child food intake, other obesity-a

Children of a transsexual father: a successful intervention.

Following gender reassignment, transsexuals are often assessed in many different areas with regard to how they are functioning. However, there is little attention paid to the children they may have had prior to the operation and change in lifestyle. Children may present with problems related to the parents transsexualism, or with more generalised difficulties secondary to break-up of the family. A family of a transsexual father is described in which the children presented with difficulties and in which the intervention was successful.

Multilevel factors influencing parental food decision-making across childhood stages in China: a qualitative study using a socioecological framework.

INTRODUCTION: China faces a double burden of childhood malnutrition. Parents are key dietary gatekeepers, yet limited research has examined how food decision-making evolves across child developmental stages. This study explored multilevel, dynamic determinants of parental food choices across infancy, preschool and primary school age in Zhejiang, China. METHODS: Using visual ethnography, 29 caregivers completed 7-day photographic food diaries followed by in-depth interviews. Data were thematically analysed using an inductive-deductive approach within a socioecological framework. A causal loop

Paediatric point-of-care ultrasound in a resource-limited Melanesian setting: A case series.

Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) is an imaging modality with high potential impact on the practice of paediatric emergency medicine in resource-limited settings. Aside from the obvious diagnostic utility, it facilitates safe procedural guidance at the bedside and provides haemodynamic information to guide resuscitation of shocked states. This five-patient paediatric case series illustrates the range of POCUS modalities used while working in emergency medicine at a regional referral hospital in Vanuatu. Cases described include a teenager with meningococcaemia, femoral central line insertion in

[Multifamily therapy in children with learning disabilities].

Multifamily therapy is an evidence-based method used in the treatment and prevention of severe psychiatric disorders, behavioral problems and physical illnesses in children, adolescents and adults. For preventive family-oriented work with children with learning disorders there is a lack of therapeutic models. This article presents results from an innovative pilot project--multiple family groups for families with a learning disabled child of primary school age (six to eleven years old). Based on a systemic approach, this resource-oriented program integrates creative, activity-based intervention

MindTS-Net: A multimodal mindfulness-based intervention framework for children with Tourette syndrome.

Tourette syndrome affects children's daily functioning and creates a need for supervised support that responds to tic behaviors, emotional states, and interaction contexts. We developed MindTS-MMD, a Chinese multimodal dataset capturing emotion, tic-related behaviors, interaction context, and Valence-Arousal ratings, and MindTS-Net, a supervised digital adjunct linking multimodal emotion perception, mindfulness strategy planning, child-appropriate guidance generation, and dialogue-state tracking. Evaluation included dataset benchmarking, a 14-day primary clinical study with 60 children, and an

Home alone: aligning childhood supervision guidelines with child neurodevelopment.

In Canada, decisions about when a child can be left home alone are guided more by legal ambiguity and social norms than by developmental evidence. Most provinces rely on the concept of 'reasonable supervision', leaving families to navigate this question with limited guidance. However, the neurocognitive abilities required for safe independence-executive function, emotional regulation, and risk assessment-continue to mature through late childhood into adolescence and are not yet fully reliable in younger children, particularly under stress or in emergency situations. This article examines the p

Child Abuse: Approach and Management.

Child maltreatment is a devastating type of adverse childhood experience that encompasses neglect and emotional, physical, and sexual abuse (including sex trafficking). Adverse childhood experiences are exposures to maltreatment or household dysfunction during crucial developmental periods that disrupt neurodevelopment and can result in lifelong physical and psychological harm, altering the child's behavior and disease risk into adulthood. Maltreatment can affect patients of any gender identity and from all racial and ethnic backgrounds, socioeconomic statuses, and community settings. Use of t

Promoting school to work transition for students with emotional/behavioral disorders.

BACKGROUND: The successful transition of students from high school to adult occupations, including work and independent living, has been a major focus of the educational reform movement in the United States. However, despite good intentions, students with disabilities have less favorable transition outcomes than do students in the general population and employment opportunities are even less promising for students with emotional/behavioral disorders (EBD). OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this model demonstration project, funded by the US Department of Education, was to develop a program based on id

The oppositional personality in childhood.

The charts of thirty children having been diagnosed at Washington University Child Guidance Clinic as having oppositional personalities are reviewed and their commonalities are noted. The literature on this syndrome is reviewed and the dynamics discussed. Delineation of this syndrome from other syndromes is considered. The issue of control for autonomy seems to be central in these children who resist authority, but have superego development.

Teachers as co-regulators of children's emotions: A descriptive study of teacher-child emotion dialogues in special education.

BACKGROUND: The study examined how teachers and children with emotional and behavioral disturbances engage in dialogues about children's emotional experiences. Dialogues about emotions are an important strategy for teachers to co-regulate children's emotions but have remained understudied. AIMS: This study aimed to explore whether the Autobiographical Emotional Events Dialogue (AEED) can help to assess the quality of teacher-child emotion dialogues about past emotional events and examined associations with child behavior and teacher-child relationship quality. METHOD: The sample included 85

Toxicology 101: Identification and Initial Management of Common Accidental Ingestions.

For the exploring child, the world is their oyster. While this world may be largely contained to their home, there is an abundance of potential dangers when it comes to an orally sensory seeking and curious child. Accidental ingestions comprise a wide array of possible agents. These include medications such as over-the-counter analgesics to prescription opioids, objects such as button batteries or coins, and toxins including cleaning supplies and laundry detergent. The pediatric clinician is an invaluable resource for providing anticipatory guidance and in emergent cases, should readily be pre

Impacts of autistic behaviors, emotional and behavioral problems on parenting stress in caregivers of children with autism.

This study examined the effects of autistic behaviors and individual emotional and behavioral problems on parenting stress in caregivers of children with autism. Caregivers were interviewed with the Childhood Autism Rating Scale and completed the Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire and the Parenting Stress Index Short Form. Results revealed that caregivers of children with mild/moderate autistic behavior problems perceived lower parenting stress than did those of children with no or severe problems. In addition, prosocial behaviors and conduct problems respectively predicted stress in the

Supporting the family after the death of a child.

The death of a child can have a devastating effect on the family. The pediatrician has an important role to play in supporting the parents and any siblings still in his or her practice after such a death. Pediatricians may be poorly prepared to provide this support. Also, because of the pain of confronting the grief of family members, they may be reluctant to become involved. This statement gives guidelines to help the pediatrician provide such support. It describes the grief reactions that can be expected in family members after the death of a child. Ways of supporting family members are sugg

Moral distress in pediatric palliative care: a case study.

End-of-life decisions for children can be complicated by disagreements between families and health care teams. These conflicts can lead to moral distress in providers. In addition, difficulties in prognostication aggravate the problem. How teams and institutions address potential staff distress is essential to providing effective palliative care for children. Through a case study of a child with a severe life-limiting syndrome, an analysis of both the ethical and legal implications of parental and team conflict are discussed. An ethics team can help provide guidance for teams and help mediate

Trends in childrens' ability to consent to a dental examination and the potential impact on reported caries indices.

UNLABELLED: New guidance on consent for England and Wales suggests that children aged over 11 should be asked to consent to the NHS child dental survey examinations. If they are "Gillick competent" then they can provide consent. Whether they are "Gillick competent" is a matter of clinical judgment of the examining dentist. This paper explores the level of understanding expressed after the examination by children apparently "Gillick competent". It considers issues how a dentist judges a child competent to make a decision to participate in a dental survey. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this inves

Anesthetic management of a child with Apert syndrome.

In this paper, the authors describe an anesthetic technique for a child with Apert syndrome, presenting to the operating room for a syndactyly separation. The anesthetic approach is innovative for the clinic and is a combination of intravenous anesthesia and two regional techniques (axillary block and transversus abdominis plane block, respectively). They were performed under ultrasound guidance and provided analgesia in the two body regions, which were to be operated.
