A report of sexual abuse in an Afghan refugee boy in Iran.

All children have the right to complete and integrated physical and psychological protection against abuse. The most important reason and risk factors for child abuse are social causes including poor familial support, poverty, mood disorders in the family, and addiction. Here, we report a case of child abuse of an Afghan child in Iran with a background of mood disturbances who presented with multiple trauma and injury. A nine-year-old Afghan boy was described with multiple injuries on neck, upper and lower extremities, and trunk. On anal examination in knee chest position, a suspected mucosal

Latino Parents' Experiences With Literacy Promotion in Primary Care: Facilitators and Barriers.

OBJECTIVE: Literacy promotion is a pediatric standard of care in which clinicians provide guidance on shared reading. Latino parents are more likely to hear advice to read with children but are less likely to do so. We sought to understand literacy promotion from the perspective of Latino parents and to identify facilitators and barriers. METHODS: We purposively sampled Latino parents who participated in Reach Out and Read (ROR) for a qualitative, semistructured interview study. We identified themes using immersion/crystallization and achieved thematic saturation after 21 interviews. RESULTS

[The importance of nutrition in maternal health and economy in nutrition].

Iron requirement of women in child bearing age are higher than normal level. During pregnancy and lactation women also need extra food to meet the increasing iron and other nutrient requirements. When women can not meet these requirements, they use their own tissues. This in turn cause deteriation of mother and child health. In our country, one third of mothers have various health problems and half of them are anemic. The principal factors for nutritional and health problems are poverty, lack of nutritional knowledge, frequent pregnancy and child birth. Effective and continuing nutrition educa

Child Abuse in Natural Disasters and Conflicts: A Systematic Review.

Violence against children affects a significant portion of youth around the world. Emergencies and natural disasters escalate the risk due to weakened child protection systems and disruption of preventative mechanisms. In this systematic review, 692 related papers were searched in various databases in the initial search. After review, 11 papers were finally selected for full review. These papers were selected based on publication date, relevance to emergencies, their geographical area type of violence, age of subjects, and their gender. Most families affected by natural disasters, especially t

A mental health clinic for toddlers with developmental delays and behavior problems.

A mental health clinic was developed for toddlers with developmental disabilities and significant behavior problems from families living in poverty. The clinic was a collaborative effort between a community-based Birth-to-Three agency and a university. The purpose of this clinic was threefold: to provide direct mental health services for these young children, to train graduate students to work with this population, and to begin to contribute to the limited research available in this area. This paper describes the clinical intake procedures and outcomes for the 81 children served by the clinic

Conditional cash transfers and the creation of equal opportunities of health for children in low and middle-income countries: a literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Conditional Cash Transfers (CCTs) have been largely used in the world during the past decades, since they are known for enhancing children's human development and promoting social inclusion for the most deprived groups. In other words, CCTs seek to create life chances for children to overcome poverty and exclusion, thus reducing inequality of opportunity. The main goal of the present article is to identify studies capable of showing if CCTs create equality of opportunity in health for children in low and middle-income countries. METHODOLOGY: Comprehensive literature searches wer

Stunting and intestinal parasites in school children from high marginalized localities at the Mexican southeast.

INTRODUCTION: Children under five years of age from developing countries are in risk of not achieving an adequate human development due to stunting and extreme poverty. They were also affected by intestinal helminths. Inhabitants of the state of Chiapas, the poorest population in Mexico, register the highest prevalence of child malnutrition as well as intestinal parasitic infections. With the purpose of fight against poverty and hunger, the Mexican government launched a social program called "Prospera". The aim of this work was to determine the prevalence of stunting and intestinal parasites i

Millennium development goals and child undernutrition.

Reduction in prevalence of underweight children (under five years of age) has been included as an indicator for one of the targets to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger (Goal 1) of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The most recent MDG report of 2012 indicates that the target of reducing extreme poverty by half has been reached five years ahead of the 2015 deadline but close to one third of children in Southern Asia were underweight. In India, at the historical rate of decline the proportion of underweight children below 3 years, required to be reduced to 26% by 2015, is expected to co

Effects of family violence on psychopathology symptoms in children previously exposed to maltreatment.

Although many studies suggest that family violence is associated with child psychopathology, multiple features of the home environment might account for this association, such as poverty and caregiver psychopathology. Studies are needed examining how change in psychopathology symptoms is affected by home violence, controlling for children's own developmental symptom histories and other predictors of psychopathology. This study used latent difference score structural equation modeling to test if witnessing home violence and/or experiencing harsh physical discipline predicted changes in psychopa

Social determinants of health influence disease activity and functional disability in Polyarticular Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis.

BACKGROUND: Social determinants of health (SDH) greatly influence outcomes during the first year of treatment in rheumatoid arthritis, a disease similar to polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis (pJIA). We investigated the correlation of community poverty level and other SDH with the persistence of moderate to severe disease activity and functional disability over the first year of treatment in pJIA patients enrolled in the Childhood Arthritis and Rheumatology Research Alliance Registry. METHODS: In this cohort study, unadjusted and adjusted generalized linear mixed effects models analyz

"If I Was Educated, I Would Call the Ambulance and Give Birth at the Health Facility"-A Qualitative Exploratory Study of Inequities in the Utilization of Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health Services in Northern Ethiopia.

In earlier studies, we have shown that the utilization of maternal health services in rural Ethiopia was distributed in a pro-rich fashion, while the coverage of child immunization was equitably distributed. Hence, this study aimed to explore mothers' and primary healthcare workers' perceptions of inequities in maternal, newborn, and child health services in rural Ethiopia, along with the factors that could influence such differentials. A qualitative study was conducted from November to December 2019 in two rural districts in Tigray, Ethiopia. Twenty-two in-depth interviews and three focus gro

The Risk of Drug Abuse among Preschool Students in Phuket, Thailand.

BACKGROUND: There have been scientific studies on risk and protective factors associated with child outcomes. However, how risk factors interact to produce outcomes is not clearly understood. We assessed the association between school location, grade, and drug abuse risks among preschoolers. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 3353 participants aged 2-6 yr (mean: 4.6, SD: 1.03) enrolled in childcare centers and kindergarten classes in 2016 in Phuket, Thailand. The risk of drug abuse was measured using questionnaires, completed by teachers and caregivers. Data were analyzed using desc

Collective familial decision-making in times of trouble: intergenerational solidarity in Ghana.

In post-colonial populations the retention of the nuclear family concept of collectivism as the basis for decision-making is associated with familial and cultural survival. Collectivism within familial contexts provides intergenerational access to experience, information, resources, and sound decision making during times of conflict or dealing with the consequences of poverty. In contemporary Ghana inter-ethnic wars and conflict have marginalized minority groups, causing substantial internal displacement of people. Poverty and cultural issues have caused a persistently high level of child maln

Predicting child maltreatment among Puerto Rican children from migrant and non-migrant families.

OBJECTIVES: The objectives of the present study were to (1) describe the prevalence of child maltreatment among migrant and non-migrant Puerto Rican families and (2) identify socio-demographic and cultural (i.e., acculturation pattern, familismo) predictors of maltreatment within these two samples. METHOD: Representative community samples of Puerto Rican children (ages 5-13 at baseline) and their adult caretakers were interviewed at two sites: the South Bronx in New York City (n=631 families) and the Standard Metropolitan Areas of San Juan and Caguas in Puerto Rico (n=859 families). Assessing the impact of social determinants of health on rising preterm birth trends in England. A longitudinal ecological study, 2012-17.

BACKGROUND: Preterm birth (PTB) is the UK's leading cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality. There is international evidence of socioeconomic inequalities in PTB. Between 2012 and 2017, the proportion of live births occurring prematurely increased in England. This study explores how changes to major social determinants of health (SDH) may have contributed to recent trends. METHODS: We analysed PTB trends and their correlation with contemporaneous trends in major SDH predictors (socioeconomic status, income, and unemployment) for English Local Authorities. We used both fixed-effects and mixe

Socioeconomic gradients and child development in a very low income population: evidence from Madagascar.

Our objectives were to document and examine socioeconomic gradients across a comprehensive set of child development measures in a population living in extreme poverty, and to interpret these gradients in light of findings from the neuroscience literature. We assessed a nationally representative sample of 3-6-year-old children (n = 1332) from 150 communities of Madagascar using standard tests of development. We found that children whose families were in the top wealth quintile or whose mothers had secondary education performed significantly better across almost all measures of cognitive and lan

Social capital, poverty, and income inequality as predictors of gonorrhoea, syphilis, chlamydia and AIDS case rates in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Social capital has been related to a number of important public health variables such as child welfare, mortality, and health status. However, the relation of social capital to infectious diseases has received relatively little attention. The relation of social capital to health measures is often posited to be related to the key societal variables of poverty and income inequality. Therefore, any exploration of the correlation between social capital and infectious diseases should also include examination of the association with poverty and income inequality. OBJECTIVE: This study e

Life in a landfill slum, children's health, and the Millennium Development Goals.

People living in slums can be considered left behind with regard to national successes in achieving Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The objective of this study was to evaluate the living and working conditions of waste pickers and their children in a landfill slum located in the largest city in eastern Indonesia. A total of 113 people from the landfill slum and 1184 people from the general population participated in face-to-face interviews. Municipal solid waste (MSW) was analyzed for metals, metalloids and fecal indicator bacteria. Ambient air quality including particulate matter was mea

Early literacy interventions: reach out and read.

Linkages between literacy attainment and poverty have been well documented in the literature. This article reviews the literacy challenges for low-income children and the need for child health practitioners to be informed about children's literacy environments. The authors define literacy and emphasize that literacy is a continuous developmental process that includes listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Read Out and Read is a national model that has demonstrated its effectiveness to improve receptive and expressive language development in children. Pediatricians are uniquely positioned t
