[First isolation of Histoplasma capsulatum from the urban bat Eumops bonariensis].

We report the first isolation of Histoplasma capsulatum var. capsulatum from a male bat Eumops bonariensis captured in Buenos Aires city in 2003. The pathogen was recovered from spleen and liver specimens, and was identified by its phenotypic characteristics. PCR with primers 1283, (GTG)5, (GACA)4 and M13 was used to compare both bat isolates with 17 human isolates, 12 from patients residing in Buenos Aires city, and 5 from other countries of the Americas. The profiles obtained with the four primers showed that both bat isolates were identical to each other and closer to Buenos Aires patients

Knowledge about bacterial and viral pathogens present in wild mammals in Chile: a systematic review.

This study organizes all available information about viral and bacterial pathogens of wild mammals in Chile. This was done in order to identify pathogens that have been well-documented and recognize those that have not been properly studied, determine the number of articles that have been published annually about this topic and identify regions in Chile that concentrate the highest and lowest number of studies concerning viral and bacterial pathogens. A total of 67 scientific articles published in peer-reviewed journals from 1951 to 2018 were selected for revision. Results indicate that the nu

Seroprevalence of rabies virus antibodies in bats from southern China.

Members of the Order Chiroptera are the natural reservoirs of lyssaviruses and play an important role in the transmission of rabies to animals and humans. In this present study, the seroprevalence for rabies virus was determined for bats sampled from four southern provinces on the Chinese mainland. A total of 685 bats of 8 species representing 4 families were collected from 10 sites, and were tested by the indirect fluorescent antibody test using fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)-conjugated protein A/G mixture and viral neutralization test. Rabies antibody response was only detected from three

BATSY4-PRO: an open-source multichannel ultrasound recorder for field bioacoustics.

A variety of behavioural studies of echolocation and acoustic communication in free-flying bats depend on multichannel ultrasonic recordings. However, access to these methods remains geographically uneven: tropical and subtropical regions harbour much of the world's bat diversity yet remain underrepresented in experimental behavioural bioacoustics. Conventional systems often depend on costly audio interfaces, laptops, and specialist expertise. Although instrumentation is only one contributor to this disparity, a compact, affordable, openly documented platform can reduce a practical barrier to

Agent-based modeling reveals how bats navigate dense group emergences.

Bats face a complex navigation challenge when emerging from densely populated roosts, where vast numbers take off at once in dark, confined spaces. Each bat must avoid collisions with walls and conspecifics while locating the exit, all amidst overlapping acoustic signals. This crowded environment creates the risk of acoustic jamming, in which the calls of neighboring bats interfere with echo detection, potentially obscuring vital information. Despite these challenges, bats navigate these conditions with remarkable success. Although bats have access to multiple sensory cues, here, we focused on

Hematological Parameters in the Ontogeny of the Pond Bat Myotis dasycneme Boie, 1825 from the Urals.

Hematological parameters were for the first time studied in female pond bats (Myotis dasycneme Boie, 1825) in the postnatal period. Significant changes in red blood cell indices were found to accompany the growth and development of pond bats, while white blood cell indices remained stable. Significant differences in erythropoiesis were observed between adults and yearlings. With age, red blood cell count, hemoglobin, and platelet aggregation increased in pond bats; blood clotting processes became faster; and platelet involution was detected (p < 0.05). Neutrophil counts were elevated in adult

Neuroanatomical Comparison of the Brain in Young and Adult Lesser Mouse-Tailed Bat, Rhinopoma hardwickii (Gray, 1831).

Bats are the sole group of mammals capable of flight, classified into Microchiroptera and Megachiroptera. This investigation aimed to study the morphology, anatomy, and histology of the Microchiropterans R. hardwickii brain at young and adult stages. Twelve adult and young bats were used. The gross anatomical aspects were examined. Brain tissue sections were prepared and stained using H&E, Nissl, toluidine blue, and immunohistochemically using GFAP antibody. The brain's dorsal view was pear-shaped, divided into forebrain (cerebrum), midbrain (is the most rostral part of the brainstem; pons and

Zwiesel bat banyangvirus, a potentially zoonotic Huaiyangshan banyangvirus (Formerly known as SFTS)-like banyangvirus in Northern bats from Germany.

Bats are reservoir hosts for several emerging and re-emerging viral pathogens causing morbidity and mortality in wildlife, animal stocks and humans. Various viruses within the family Phenuiviridae have been detected in bats, including the highly pathogenic Rift Valley fever virus and Malsoor virus, a novel Banyangvirus with close genetic relation to Huaiyangshan banyangvirus (BHAV)(former known as Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus, SFTSV) and Heartland virus (HRTV), both of which have caused severe disease with fatal casualties in humans. In this study we present the whole geno

Morphological and histological characters of penile organization in eleven species of molossid bats.

The penis is the reproductive organ that ensures efficient copulation and success of internal fertilization in all species of mammals, with special challenges for bats, where copulation can occur during flight. Comparative anatomical analyses of different species of bats can contribute to a better understanding of morphological diversity of this organ, concerning organization and function. In this study, we describe the external morphology and histomorphology of the penis and baculum in eleven species of molossid bats. The present study showed that penile organization in these species displaye

Activity of BatIFIT5 in different species of healthy and naturally infected with rabies virus bats.

Bats are mammals with vital role played in numerous ecosystem services, however bats can be important reservoirs or hosts for several microorganisms. Rabies is a zoonosis caused by Rabies lyssavirus (RABV) that affects the central nervous system (CNS) of all mammals, including bats and humans. The action of IFN-stimulated genes (ISGs) could be responsible for inhibiting different stages of the viral replication cycle. A major family of ISGs are the Interferon-induced proteins with tetrapeptide repeats (IFITs) and your action against infections caused by viruses from different families was prov

Male reproductive morphofunctional evaluation of a Neotropical sperm-storing vespertilionid bat (Myotis levis) in an environmental context.

Myotis levis (yellowish myotis) is a small Neotropical insectivorous vespertilionid bat that provides valuable ecosystem services, such as control of disease vectors and agricultural pests. Aiming to describe the fluctuations of the reproductive organs throughout the year, the gonads and epididymis from 124 adult bats were histologically evaluated. These animals were captured in Santuário do Caraça, Minas Gerais, Brazil. After the initial screening, six bats per reproductive stage (in a representative month) had specific organs harvested for further investigation. The gonads, epididymis, acces

The complete genomic sequence of Rhinolophus gammaherpesvirus 1 isolated from a greater horseshoe bat.

In a comprehensive research project on bat viruses, we successfully isolated a novel herpesvirus from the spleen of a greater horseshoe bat (Rhinolophus ferrumequinum) in Japan using a cell line established from the kidney of the same bat. This herpesvirus was a novel gammaherpesvirus (Rhinolophus gammaherpesvirus 1; RGHV-1), which belonged to the genus Percavirus. The whole RGHV-1 genome (147,790 bp) showed that 12 of the 84 genes predicted to contain open reading frames did not show any homology to those of other herpesviruses.

Epidemiology and control of rabies in bats in The Netherlands.

The first case of bat rabies in the Netherlands was recorded in 1987. Since then, 2,540 bats have been examined. In total, 186 bats belonging to two species were found positive for rabies: 182 Eptesicus serotinus and 4 Myotis dasycneme. The virus isolates from the two species were found to be different. Approximately 20% of the E. serotinus bats sent for examination were found positive. The epidemiological findings suggest a stable situation of infection north of the Rhine and the Meuse. A total of 174 humans received post-exposure treatment after direct contact with a positive or suspected ba
