Chlorella pyrenoidosa-derived extracellular vesicles ameliorate ulcerative colitis through microbiota-mediated AKT/mTOR/ferroptosis pathway.

BACKGROUND: Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by frequent relapses and slow recovery, with a current deficiency in safe and effective therapeutic options. Chlorella pyrenoidosa (CP), a natural green microalga, is abundant in bioactive compounds possessing anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Microalga-derived extracellular vesicles, characterized by their non-destructive isolation process and potential for recyclability, exhibit distinct advantages over those from other plant sources. PURPOSE: To investigate the protective effects and underlying

Perfluorohexane sulfonate (PFHxS)-induced energy metabolism disruption in Chlorella pyrenoidosa: Integrating physiological and transcriptomic insights.

Perfluorohexane sulfonate (PFHxS), a widely used alternative to perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), has been prevalent in aquatic environments. However, its toxic mechanisms in algae remain poorly understood. In this study, a 12-day exposure experiment was conducted to systematically investigate the toxicity of PFHxS in Chlorella pyrenoidosa through physiological parameter measurements and transcriptomic analysis. The results revealed that significant growth inhibition (9%) was observed at 1 mg/L PFHxS on day 12, accompanied by altered photosynthetic responses, including decreases in chlorophyll

Antibiotic Stress Reshapes Physiological Homeostasis, Lipid Metabolism, and Culture-Associated Bacterial Communities in Chlorella pyrenoidosa.

Antibiotics are widely used to decontaminate microalgal cultures, but their effects on algal physiology and associated bacterial communities remain unclear. We examined the concentration- and compound-dependent responses of Chlorella pyrenoidosa to ampicillin sodium, sulfanilamide, chloramphenicol, and streptomycin sulfate. Growth, culturable bacterial abundance, pigment content, photosynthetic performance, and fatty-acid composition were assessed across a mixed-antibiotic concentration gradient and under individual treatments. Higher antibiotic concentrations suppressed bacteria but inhibited

Chlorella-based bioactive oxygen generator for sustained tumor hypoxia alleviation and combined-modality tumor therapy.

The hypoxic tumor microenvironment (TME) promotes tumor progression and therapeutic resistance primarily through the activation of hypoxia-inducible factor-α (HIF-α). However, current oxygen-sensitizing strategies are hindered by low delivery efficiency, transient efficacy, and severe adverse effects. In this study, we developed a composite system (C@W) comprising Chlorella pyrenoidosa (CHL) and tungsten disulfide (WS₂). This platform synergistically integrates the photosynthetic oxygen generation capacity of CHL with the photocatalytic functionality of WS₂, enabling multimodal antitumor effic

Role of Novel Chlorella vulgaris SSAU8 in Improving the Soil Health Under Induced Drought Stress.

The severe climate change has caused a drastic water level disparity around the globe, which eventually has been one of the biggest problems of this era related to land degradation. This has caused the multidimensional impact on ecology, the environment, and their components. Algae, one of the ancient micro-engineers, are involved in the functioning of soil microcosm. Therefore, this study has utilized a novel alga, Chlorella vulgaris SSAU8 to observe the impact of low water potential induced by PEG-6000 (polyethylene glycol). The study has utilized the UV-Vis spectrophotometer to explore the

Chlorella-derived N-doped biochar decorated with Fe2N/Fe3C nanocrystals for persulfate-based tetracycline removal.

Persulfate (PDS)-based advanced oxidation processes have emerged as promising methods for antibiotic removal, but achieving high catalytic efficiency for tetracycline (TC) degradation remains difficult. The catalytic performance of FeGCB-N in PDS activation depended on Fe content and pyrolysis temperature, with defect density and intermetallic compound formation largely determined by the pyrolysis temperature. The optimized Fe0.2GCB-N-800 exhibited remarkable PDS activation performance for tetracycline degradation, achieving over 99 % removal within 65 min under conditions of 10 mg L-1 TC, 1 m

Effect of light intensity on Chlorella sp. biofilm growth on anaerobically digested food effluents (ADFE).

Optimizing light conditions in any culture design for effluent treatment is crucial for maximizing microalgae growth and nutrient uptake. We investigated the impact of low (53 ± 1 μmol m-2 s-1), medium (208 ± 12 μmol m-2 s-1), and high (518 ± 22 μmol m-2 s-1) light intensities on the diffused biofilm-based growth of Chlorella sp. for treating anaerobically digested food effluent (ADFE). The alga grew well across all treatments, irrespective of light intensity. However, biomass yields, and productivity positively correlated with light intensity, with the highest biomass yield (120 g m-2) and pr

Cryopreservation of Paramecium bursaria Chlorella Virus-1 during an active infection cycle of its host.

Best practices in laboratory culture management often include cryopreservation of microbiota, but this can be challenging with some virus particles. By preserving viral isolates researchers can mitigate genetic drift and laboratory-induced selection, thereby maintaining genetically consistent strains between experiments. To this end, we developed a method to cryopreserve the model, green-alga infecting virus, Paramecium bursaria Chlorella virus 1 (PBCV-1). We explored cryotolerance of the infectivity of this virus particle, whereby freezing without cryoprotectants was found to maintain the hig

HS- facilitated sulfur pyran realizing hydrogen sulfide detection and imaging in HepG2 cells and chlorella.

The new carbazole-based fluorescent probe CA-1 was designed and synthesized for the high selective detection of H2S based on HS- facilitated sulfur pyran resulting in UV-Vis and fluorescent spectra changes. At the same time, the probe showed good sensitivity to the detection of H2S with a low detection limit of 0.16 μM. The detection process can be monitored by naked eye: with the addition of H2S, the probe system changed from yellow to pink. Importantly, the probe could be applied in monitoring H2S in HepG2 cells and Chlorella. These results indicate that CA-1 can be used as a promising fluor

Current lipid extraction methods are significantly enhanced adding a water treatment step in Chlorella protothecoides.

BACKGROUND: Microalgae have the potential to rapidly accumulate lipids of high interest for the food, cosmetics, pharmaceutical and energy (e.g. biodiesel) industries. However, current lipid extraction methods show efficiency limitation and until now, extraction protocols have not been fully optimized for specific lipid compounds. The present study thus presents a novel lipid extraction method, consisting in the addition of a water treatment of biomass between the two-stage solvent extraction steps of current extraction methods. The resulting modified method not only enhances lipid extraction

Extraction of Lipids from Chlorella saccharophila Using High-Pressure Homogenization Followed by Three Phase Partitioning.

Commercial exploitation of microalgae for biofuel and food ingredients is hindered due to laborious extraction protocols and use of hazardous chemicals. Production of lipids in the microalga grown in modified BG11 medium was evaluated to arrive at the appropriate harvesting conditions. The use of three phase partitioning (TPP) as a green approach for extraction of lipids from Chlorella saccharophila was investigated. Cells disrupted by probe sonication were used for separation of lipids by TPP. The TPP-optimized conditions of 30 % ammonium sulfate, using slurry/t-butanol of 1:0.75 for 60 min a

Saline wastewater treatment by Chlorella vulgaris with simultaneous algal lipid accumulation triggered by nitrate deficiency.

Chlorella vulgaris, a marine microalgae strain adaptable to 0-50 g L(-1) of salinity, was selected for studying the coupling system of saline wastewater treatment and lipid accumulation. The effect of total nitrogen (T N) concentration was investigated on algal growth, nutrients removal as well as lipid accumulation. The removal efficiencies of TN and total phosphorus (TP) were found to be 92.2-96.6% and over 99%, respectively, after a batch cultivation of 20 days. To illustrate the response of lipid accumulation to nutrients removal, C. vulgaris was further cultivated in the recycling experim

Extending the limits of algal growth and stress resilience - the desert alga Chlorella ohadii as an emerging model.

Since its isolation from the sand dunes of the Negev Desert over a decade ago, the unicellular green alga Chlorella ohadii has turned into a reference organism for studying photosynthesis, metabolism, and abiotic stress response. Much of C. ohadii's appeal as an emerging model lies in its robust fast growth, comparable to yeast even as a photoautotroph. Hence, the detailed physiological, biochemical, and molecular studies that followed rapidly, together with extensive omics datasets, have revealed several of its intriguing biological features. We provide a historical perspective unfolding the

Influence of Biogenic Material Content on the Biodegradability of Styrene-Butadiene Composites with Incorporated Chlorella vulgaris Biomass.

Bio-fillers are intensively studied for advanced polymer composite circular design and production. In this context, the algal biomass may be considered an important and relatively low-cost resource, when harvested as a by-product from wastewater treatment plants. The biomass of the algal species Chlorella vulgaris is frequently used in this type of environmental process, and its macro constituents' composition ranges from around 15-25% carbohydrates, 10-20% lipids, and 50-60% proteins. In vivo microspectroscopy monitoring of chromium effects on the photosynthetic and photoreceptive apparatus of Eudorina unicocca and Chlorella kessleri.

In microorganisms and plants, chromium (Cr) is not essential for any metabolic process, and can ultimately prove highly deleterious. Due to its widespread industrial use, chromium has become a serious pollutant in diverse environmental settings. The presence of Cr leads to the selection of specific algal populations able to tolerate high levels of Cr compounds. The varying Cr-resistance mechanisms displayed by microorganisms include biosorption, diminished accumulation, precipitation, reduction of Cr(6+) to Cr(3+), and chromate efflux. In this paper we describe the effects of Cr(6+) (the most
