We have evaluated the cooling rates of specimens mounted in a variety of freeze-fracture holders when plunged into a series of liquid coolants. these rates were measured using miniature thermocouples placed within the mounted specimens. The most rapid cooling rates were obtained using propane at 83 K as the coolant. When mounted on a newly devised 'copper sandwich' holder, specimen cooling rates in excess of 4500 K/s have been recorded. A simple guillotine-like device for quenching freeze-fracture specimens under reproducible conditions is presented.

Results obtained using the Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometer (FTIR) and the Miniature Infrared Analyzer (MIRAN) for samples of workplace air containing trichloroethylene (TCE) were evaluated through comparison with results obtained when using a gas chromatography (GC). A simple method for extracting and purifying lipids from rat liver in a single step using nontoxic solvents is described. The method consists homogenizing the pulverized tissue with a mixture of trichlorotrifluoroethane (Cl2CF-CCIF2) and isopropyl alcohol (1 : 1, v/v). The first example of a metal-free direct carbotrifluoromethylation of alkenes using inexpensive TMSCF3 as the CF3 source is described. The methodology not only exhibits high chemoselectivity for this transformation but also expands the substrate scope that is difficult to access by known transition-metal-catalyzed methods.

An enantioselective organocatalytic alpha-trifluoromethylation of aldehydes has been accomplished using a commercially available, electrophilic trifluoromethyl source. The merging of Lewis acid and organocatalysis provides a new strategy for the enantioselective construction of trifluoromethyl stereogenicity, an important chiral synthon for pharmaceutical, materials, and agrochemical applications. This mild and operationally simple protocol allows rapid access to enantioenriched alpha-trifluoromethylated aldehydes through a nonphotolytic pathway.

The present work relates to a sensitive neutron dosimeter, a device for monitoring neutron dose in some accelerator and reactor sites. This device is capable of measuring a neutron dose as small as 0.1 microSv using superheated liquid as a sensitive liquid. The nucleation was measured by the volumetric method developed in our laboratory. The dose response of superheated drops of four liquids having boiling points of 8.92, -29.79, -40.75 and -45.6 degrees C, irradiated by a 3 Ci Am-Be neutron source has also been presented in this article.

Six skin refrigerants were evaluated for maximum cooling temperature. The temperatures produced correlated well with the chemical components and also the gelatin freeze-thaw times. Freon 114 and Freon 114-ethyl chloride mixtures are time-tested, safe skin refrigerants. Some of the newer skin refrigerants are pure sources of Freon 12 or mixtures of Freon 12 and Freon 11. These newer, colder products have the potential to damage the skin and represent a hazard to successful dermabrasion.

Mengovirus, extracted from infected L-cell cultures with Freon 113 and concentrated from the aqueous phase with polyethyleneglycol, was chromatographed on protein-coated controlled pore glass (CPG).
