OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this commentary are to: (1) identify unique aspects of communication at end-of-life as compared to more commonly studied healthcare encounters; (2) outline challenges and opportunities research team members may encounter in coding and analyzing end-of-life communication; and (3) offer recommendations for quantitative communication research teams. This commentary is based on ours and others' experiences in studying the communication among patients with terminal illnesses, their families and their providers. Provider-patient/caregiver communication at end-of-life ha

Counterfactual thinking is a component of human decision-making that entails "if only" thinking about unselected choices and outcomes. It is associated with strong emotional responses of regret (when the obtained outcome is inferior to the counterfactual) and relief (vice versa). Counterfactual thinking may play a role in various cognitive phenomena in disordered gambling, such as the effects of near-misses. This study compared individuals with gambling disorder (n = 46) and healthy controls (n = 25) on a behavioural economic choice task that entailed choosing between two gambles, designed to

The purpose of this paper is to review the literature examining subjective and physiological arousal associated with an individual's preferred modes of gambling. Arousal is hypothesised to play a central role in the onset and maintenance of problem gambling. Most studies have failed to differentiate relevant patterns of arousal elicited by stimuli associated with preferred versus non-preferred modes of gambling on the assumption that similar processes motivate all gamblers. At the conceptual level, sub-typing theories of problem gambling propose differences in the motivation to gamble, and the

Hyperbolic discounting of delayed rewards has been proposed as an underlying cause of the failure to stick to plans to forego one's immediate desires, such as the plan to diet, wake up early, or quit taking heroin. We conducted two tests of inconsistent planning in which respondents made at least two choices between a smaller-sooner (SS) and larger-later (LL) amount of money, one several weeks before SS would be received, and one immediately before. Hyperbolic discounting predicts that there would be more choices of SS as it became more proximate-and, equivalently, that among those who change

Many gamblers believe that it is possible to find a strategy to beat the lottery including selecting numbers that are due to come up or looking for a bias in past numbers. In this paper, we examine sales figures and variations in the number of winners for the various prize levels of a popular Canadian lottery to detect lottery ticket preferences. It was determined that the lottery outcomes conformed well to a random outcome. No evidence of either a bias myth or due to come up myth was found. However ticket popularity indicated a marked preference for the number 7 and low numbers, and the avoid

Recent research has tried to determine whether and under which conditions domestic dogs (Canis familiaris) engage in prosocial and potentially altruistic behaviour. A common paradigm used to test this is the so-called prosocial choice test. This is a task in which the animal can choose to operate an apparatus based on the outcome. For example, this could involve delivering food to themselves, to another individual, to both, or to neither. The aim of the current study was to investigate dogs' collaborative tendencies with humans, with the use of a novel prosocial choice test paradigm. This para

Understanding the link between bird personality and food preference would help elucidate individual foraging strategies and species adaptability. However, there is a knowledge gap regarding the relationship between personality and food preference to nutritional or energetic quality. Here, we investigated how exploratory behavior, a consistent behavioral trait, influenced the selection of Java sparrows (Lonchura oryzivora) on foods with different nutritional and energetic qualities. We found that food preference varied across fast-, medium-, to slow-exploring groups. The fast- and medium-explor

The responses of the predatory mite P. persimilis to herbivore-induced plant volatiles are at least partly genetically determined. Thus, there is potential for the evolution of this behaviour by natural selection. We tested whether distinct predator genotypes with contrasting responses to a specific herbivore-induced plant volatile, i.e. methyl salicylate (MeSa), could be found in a base population collected in the field (Sicily). To this end, we imposed purifying selection on individuals within iso-female lines of P. persimilis such that the lines were propagated only via the individual that

Dr. Warren Bickel tirelessly investigated delay discounting (DD), a behavioral economic index of impulsive decision making, as a determinant of numerous health outcomes. Among the factors that contribute to a person's level of DD, a burgeoning body of research has illuminated its genetic foundations and the extent to which it may be a mechanistically informative phenotype for genetic contributions to addiction, obesity, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and a wide array of other health behaviors. In this review, we provide a concise history of quantification of DD as a human decision-m

Risk attitudes in humans depend on the format used to present the gamble: we are more risk-averse for common gambles in the gains domain whose properties are described to us verbally than for those whose properties we learned about solely through experience. This difference, which constitutes part of the description-experience gap, is important, because it highlights the role of knowledge acquisition in decision-making. The reasons for the gap remain obscure, but could depend upon uniquely human cognitive abilities, such as those associated with language. Thus, the gap may or may not extend to

Humans tend to value rewards more if they have had to work hard to obtain them (justification of effort). Similarly they tend to persist in a task even when they would be better off beginning a new one (sunk cost). Humans also often give greater value to objects of good quality than the same objects together with objects of lesser quality (the less is more effect). Commercial gambling (lotteries and slot machines) is another example of suboptimal choice by humans because on average the rewards are less than the investment. In another example of a systematic bias, when humans try to estimate th

We determined how leopard frogs respond to non-moving aspects of the environment. We have discovered that these frogs are attracted to dark, stationary, opaque objects. This attraction depends on the relative reflectance of the object, i.e., the darker the block, the more attractive it is, and the attraction is found under both bright and dim ambient light levels. Larger blocks are more attractive than smaller blocks, but frogs are still attracted to blocks much smaller than themselves. Previous studies have shown that frogs are also attracted to sources of light. Using a choice experiment, we

When humans buy a lottery ticket or gamble at a casino they are engaging in an activity that on average leads to a loss of money. Although animals are purported to engage in optimal foraging behavior, similar sub-optimal behavior can be found in pigeons. They show a preference for an alternative that is associated with a low probability of reinforcement (e.g., one that is followed by a red hue on 20% of the trials and then reinforcement or by a green hue on 80% of the trials and then the absence of reinforcement) over an alternative that is associated with a higher probability of reinforcement

RATIONALE: Reward-associated cues can promote maladaptive behavior, including risky decision-making in a gambling setting. A propensity for sign tracking over goal tracking-i.e., interaction with a reward-predictive cue rather than the site of reward-demonstrates an individual's tendency to transfer motivational value to a cue. However, the relationship of sign tracking to risky decision-making remains unclear.
OBJECTIVES: To determine whether sign tracking predicts risky choice, we used a Pavlovian conditioned approach task to evaluate the tendency of male rats to sign track to a lever cue a

In our previous article on the question whether heroin addicts are able to give informed consent voluntarily to research on heroin-assisted treatment, we criticized the ongoing bioethical discussion of a flawed conceptualization of heroin addicts' options. As a participant in this discussion, Edmund Henden defends the conceptualization as sufficient for determining whether heroin addicts are able to give informed consent to the research on heroin-assisted treatment voluntarily. This discussion on research on heroin-assisted treatment seems to go astray in several respects. In his reply to our

Heroin addicts display poorer impulse control than non-addicts, however it is not known if high impulsivity is a function of chronic heroin intake or a pre-disposing vulnerability for heroin addiction. Using animal models, relatively few studies have examined changes in impulsive choice as a function of chronic drug. The objective of this study was to measure alterations in impulsive choice through a delay discounting paradigm, as a function of chronic heroin administration. Animals were trained on a series of delay discounting sessions. Each session contained 5 blocks of trials. Blocks starte

This study investigates the role of food preferences in food rejection amongst primary school children. A total of 17 children (9- and 10-year-old) took part in group discussions from which elicited their preferences from 35 photographs of different foods and dishes. They also discussed their reasons for rejecting a specific meal that had been offered to them during a trip to France. The results showed that their food preferences played a limited role in their rejection. They reported to be disgusted by the meal, and this apparently stemmed from stereotype of French food associated with imagin

It is not fully understood how cooperation emerges in a population of individuals with no connections or prior experience with each other. Strategy selection that is purely based on accumulated payoffs promotes free riders who put their self interests above that of any group. How could cooperation persist in these settings? Researchers have posited direct or indirect reciprocity as possible explanations but these theories fail if interactions are not repeated or reputations are ignored. Altruistic punishment may provide an answer. Punishers impose a penalty, such as a fine, on defectors. The i
