BACKGROUND: Chondroblastomas are rare, benign, locally aggressive lesions that appear in the epiphysis. Surgery for femoral head chondroblastoma (FHCB) is difficult. Conventional treatment with curettage via a drilled tunnel along the femoral neck can damage the growth plate and is associated with high local recurrence rates. The trapdoor procedure, which directly facilitates lesion access from the femoral head articular surface, can reduce local recurrence and avoid growth plate damage, although it requires surgical dislocation. Little is known about the long-term results of this direct artic

A 29-year-old woman complained of a 3-month history of left knee pain without trauma history. X-ray showed a well-defined osteolytic lesion with a sclerotic margin in the patella and magnetic resonance imaging showed T1-low and T2-high signal intensity with different fluid level. Our impression was an aneurysmal bone cyst. At surgery, the lesion was a blood-filled cystic cavity, surrounded by a gray or brownish tissue. Hemorrhagic soft tissues with recognizable bone fragments were observed. Curettage and autogenous bone graft was done. Microscopically, sheets of tumor cells were intermingled w

INTRODUCTION: Chondroblastoma is a rare, benign locally but aggressive bone tumor. It accounts for < 1% of primary bony tumors, and mostly arises from long bones; the rib chondroblastoma is especial rare. Due to its rarity, there are no definitive or standard treatment guidelines.
CASE PRESENTATION: A case of a 24-year-old male with a chondroblastoma located on the 6th posterior left rib. Computed tomography (CT) demonstrated a rib tumor that was a well-defined oval lesion of 20 mm × 18 mm, with lytic bone destruction. The imaging first diagnosis was Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH), a gia

Chondroblastomas are rare tumors that characteristically arise from the epiphyseal cartilage of long bones of the immature skeleton. Intracranial involvement is uncommon, though the squamous portion of the temporal bone is preferentially affected due to its cartilaginous origin. Patients with temporal bone chondroblastomas classically present with otologic symptoms, while primary neurological complaints are rare. In this report, we describe a 33 year-old man with a chondroblastoma of the temporal bone and an associated aneurysmal bone cyst constituting a large intracranial mass lesion who pres

Chondroblastoma is a relatively rare benign bone tumor. Approximately 7% of chondroblastomas occur in the calcaneus, and 17% of chondroblastoma associated with cystic lesions. We report a case of a chondroblastoma in the calcaneus with a secondary aneurysmal bone cyst treated successfully by endoscopic curettage without bone grafting. New bone formation is facilitated by minimal damage to the bone and soft tissue. The cosmetic results of this procedure are good. Two years later, the patient is asymptomatic with no radiographic evidence of recurrence. Endoscopic curettage without bone grafting

Despite its characteristic clinicopathological features, chondroblastoma may pose a diagnostic challenge, given its morphological spectrum, potential for subdiagnostic appearances in limited biopsy specimens, and its potential mimicry of other entities. Recently, a characteristic H3F3B mutation underlying most chondroblastomas was described, which led to the identification of H3.3K36M as the corresponding diagnostic immunohistochemical marker. The present study is an evaluation of immunohistochemical features of 26 chondroblastomas, including DOG1 and H3.3K36M immunostaining. H3.3K36M immunost

Radio frequency ablation (RFA) is a minimally invasive technique that has become recognized in clinical practice for treating chondroblastoma, although curettage with bone graft is the standard treatment. Chondroblastoma is a locally aggressive cartilaginous bone tumor, representing nearly 5% of benign bone tumors. Chondroblastoma shows a preference toward the epiphysis or apophysis of long bones, but it was also reported in vertebrae and flat bones. The management of chondroblastoma could be challenging due to the risk to injure the epiphyseal plate or difficult location. The aim of this stud

BACKGROUND: Chondroblastoma is a rare, benign, cartilaginous bone tumor derived from epiphyseal chondrocytes. Although the clinical characteristics and experience of surgical treatment of the smaller number of patients has been reported in the literature, it is difficult to draw conclusions about the clinical and radiographic features and the outcome for surgical treatment of this disease due to the rarity of chondroblastoma. This study was aiming to review the epidemiologic characteristics and outcome of surgical management for patients with chondroblastoma.
METHODS: We performed a retrospec

BACKGROUND: Chondroblastoma is an uncommon, benign, but locally aggressive bone tumor that occurs in the apophyses or epiphyses of long bones, primarily in young patients. Although some are treated with large resections, aggressive curettage and bone grafting are more commonly performed to preserve the involved joint. Such intralesional resection may result in damage to the growth plate and articular cartilage, which can result in painful arthritis. Prior studies have focused primarily on oncologic outcomes rather than long-term joint status and functional outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Chondroblastoma of the capital femoral epiphysis (CHCFE) in children is a rare benign bone tumor that poses significant therapeutic challenges due to its unique anatomic location adjacent to the physeal plate and femoral head articular cartilage. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of a cartilage fenestration approach combined with artificial bone implantation for the treatment of CHCFE.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 25 consecutive pediatric patients (14 boys and 11 girls; mean age, 10.5 y; range, 6 to 14 y) diagnosed with CHCFE and t

BACKGROUND: Chondroblastoma (CB) is a rare, primary, benign bone tumor that commonly affects men aged 15-20 years. It is usually detected in the epiphysis of the long bones, such as the proximal femur, humerus, and tibia. The patella is an infrequent site. CB with secondary aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) is extremely rare in the patella, which can be easily confused with other common bone tumors of the patella. Thus, it is necessary to make the right diagnosis to get a good outcome.
CASE PRESENTATION: We have presented here the case of a 30-year-old man who was suffering from anterior knee pain f

UNLABELLED: Chondroblastomas are benign bone tumors that are usually located at epiphyseal regions of long bones, and are rarely located at the talus. The usual treatment consists of curettage and filling of the bone defect with bone either bone grafts or some other material, such as cement. The authors present a case of a massive chondroblastma of the talus, extending outside of bone boundaries and with a huge soft tissue mass and invasion of the adjacent calcaneus. Management included an en bloc talectomy through a double medial and lateral approach, and curettage and filling with cement of

Chondroblastoma is a benign bone tumor that typically arises in the epiphysis of a long bone. However, when it occurs in non-epiphyseal location in flat bones, it may create a diagnostic problem. We describe such a case of chondroblastoma arising in the iliac bone. A 29-year-old man was incidentally found to have a bony pelvic lesion while undergoing evaluation for Crohn's disease. The radiographs and CT revealed an expansile lytic lesion in the right iliac bone. A core biopsy of the lesion was performed. The histopathology revealed the lesion to be a chondroblastoma with secondary features of

BACKGROUND: Chondroblastoma (CBL) is a rare benign chondroid producing bone tumor that typically occurs in epiphysis or apophysis of growing children and young adults. Intralesional curettage is the treatment of choice, while resection is required in selected cases, even though the use of minimally invasive ablation techniques has been advocated. Authors reviewed a series of 75 CBLs with the aim of assess risk factors for local recurrence, the growth plate related complications after epiphyseal curettage and the risk of arthritis of the adjacent joint after epiphyseal curettage.

BACKGROUND: Chondroblastomas (CBs) are rare benign bone tumors that are often difficult to treat because of their locations. CBs can be even more challenging to successfully manage when they present alongside aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC)-like changes. To minimize operative morbidity, especially in hard-to-reach lesions, percutaneous approaches for both lesions have been individually described. We present a skull base CB with associated ABC-like changes treated by combining two different previously described percutaneous modalities.
OBSERVATIONS: The authors report successful percutaneous treatm

Chondroblastoma is a benign tumor arising in the epiphysis of long bones. The extraskeletal presentation is most unusual. We report the first cytological description of a soft tissue chondroblastoma. It was a subcutaneous mass in the leg of a 62-yr-old man. Fine-needle aspiration (FNA) rendered a highly cellular material with grouped and single polygonal or round cells with a uniform, sometimes eccentric nucleus. Microvacuolated cytoplasm and hemosiderin pigment were frequent findings. There were rare nuclear grooves and mitoses. A metachromatic, focally calcified stroma was present, occasiona
