Prevalence of articular chondrocalcinosis in elderly subjects in a rural area of Catalonia.

OBJECTIVES: To undertake an epidemiological survey of the prevalence of radiological chondrocalcinosis in the elderly population of Osona, a rural area of Catalonia, north east Spain. METHODS: Knee and wrist radiographs were performed on 261 subjects (141 women, 120 men) aged at least 60 years, who attended a series of 35 general practitioners for various medical problems. RESULTS: Twenty seven subjects had articular chondrocalcinosis, which represents a crude prevalence of 10%. Articular chondrocalcinosis was more often observed in women than in men (14 v 6%). Articular chondrocalcinosis in

Carpal tunnel syndrome in chondrocalcinosis of the wrist. Clinical and histologic study.

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) defined electromyographically was found in 8 of 22 unselected patients with chondrocalcinosis of the wrists (bilateral in 6, unilateral in 2). Thenar atrophy was the most frequently encountered clinical sign. In the hands with CTS, calcifications of the wrist were more extensive than in the hands, without CTS. Degenerative joint changes of the hands were significantly more frequent in the group suffering from CTS. Surgery was performed in 5 patients with CTS. Microscopic examination of the volar carpal ligament and the flexor synovial tendon sheath failed to reveal

Association between chondrocalcinosis and osteoarthritis: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

AIM: To systematically examine the existing literature on the associations between chondrocalcinosis (CC) and osteoarthritis (OA) at different joints, and to quantify such associations through meta-analysis. METHODS: PubMed, Embase and Scopus databases were searched through from inception to June 2017. Cohort, case-control or cross-sectional studies were included if they examined the association between CC and OA. Data on the odds ratios (OR) and their 95% confidence intervals (CI) of the prevalence or progression of OA between the CC group and non-CC group with respect to the same joint were

Prevalence of chondrocalcinosis in a Mexican tertiary care institution of musculoskeletal disorders.

INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVES: The prevalence of chondrocalcinosis (CC) was reported as variable according to the geographic populations. However, there are no data regarding its prevalence in Mexico. Thus, we decided to investigate the Mexican prevalence of CC in a cohort of patients from a tertiary health care institution. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of radiographs of knees and wrists from our institution was performed. Inclusion criteria included patients > 50 years old having radiographs of knees and wrists. Radiographic presence of CC was classified according to a dichotomous evaluation

The H63D variant in the HFE gene predisposes to arthralgia, chondrocalcinosis and osteoarthritis.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the relation between the HFE C282Y and H63D variants with arthralgia and joint pathology in the population-based Rotterdam Study. METHODS: From a cohort of 7983 people aged 55 years and over, 2095 randomly drawn subjects were genotyped for C282Y and H63D variants. We compared the frequency of arthralgia, and the presence of chondrocalcinosis, osteophytes, joint space narrowing and radiographic osteoarthritis in hand, hip and knee joints, and Heberden's nodes in carriers of HFE variants with that in non-carriers. RESULTS: Overall, there was a significantly higher fr

[Paget's disease of bone associated with autoimmune thyroiditis and joint chondrocalcinosis].

A case of scapular Paget's disease of bone with concurrent autoimmune thyroiditis and articular chondrocalcinosis is reported. Although infrequent, this combination suggests the involvement of common pathogenic mechanisms: thyroiditis and Paget's disease may stem from the same viral infection and/or autoimmune disorder, whereas chondrocalcinosis may be the consequence of thyroiditis-related hypothyroidism. In contrast, the association of Paget's disease and chondrocalcinosis may be fortuitous, since both disorders are common.

Bartter's syndrome, chondrocalcinosis and nephrogenic hypomagnesemia in an adult. Bartter's syndrome, chondrocalcinosis and nephrogenic hypomagnesemia in an adult. Bartter's syndrome, initially described in children, becomes a controversial entity when it is observed in adults, as it cannot be dissociated easily from the pseudo Bartter's syndrome caused by an abuse of diuretics or provoked by surreptitious vomiting. Yet its association with chondrocalcinosis, about ten cases of which have already been published and which is not reproducible by prolonged diuretic treatment, seems to give it som

Articular chondrocalcinosis in seropositive rheumatoid arthritis. Comparison with a control group.

The prevalence of articular chondrocalcinosis was studied in a group of 100 patients with seropositive rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Articular chondrocalcinosis was observed less frequently (3%) than in a control group (19%) of 221 age and sex matched patients with low back pain or extraarticular rheumatism. This difference is statistically significant (p less than 0.001). Articular chondrocalcinosis occurred in the older patients with RA, and was observed in those with the shortest duration of the disease.

[Articular chondrocalcinosis and hypomagnesemia of renal origin. Apropos of 2 cases].

The authors report two cases of the articular chondrocalcinosis associated with a laboratory profile compatible with Bartter's syndrome and masked diuretic intoxication in 2 women aged 31 and 59 years. An extensive study of the literature revealed 7 similar cases. The pathogenic relationship between the two conditions could be the hypomagnesemia. 5 other reports concerning young patients presenting the association of chondrocalcinosis and hypomagnesemia, not part of Bartter's syndrome, add further support to this hypothesis. This study suggests that the serum electrolytes and the serum magnesi

Tissue changes detectable by sonography before radiological evidence of elbow chondrocalcinosis.

Chondrocalcinosis is a joint disease caused by deposits of calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate (CPPD) crystals with manifestations that may include intermittent attacks of acute arthritis or enthesitis. If no crystals are found on synovial analysis, the diagnosis in clinical practice is based on typical radiographic findings, although it is now recognized that some signs of the disease could also be seen by ultrasound. We studied six patients with elbow enthesopathy without radiographic evidence of CPPD that presented ultrasound findings suggesting joint calcification. On the basis of these echogr

[Articular chondrocalcinosis revealed by acute cervical symptoms simulating meningitis (author's transl)].

Four cases of acute cervical pain with high fever and important stiffness of the cervical spine, leading to study the cerebrospinal fluid in emergency, are reported. All cases had elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate. Recovery was obtained in all cases in a few days without treatment. The cerebrospinal fluid was normal in the three cases studied. In three patients the roentgenograms demonstrated calcified cervical cartilages, mainly in the atlas-axis joint, and osteo arthritis-like arthropathies. This syndrome, simulating meningitis revealed the calcium pyrophosphatecrystal deposition disea

Chondrocalcinosis and the haemochromatosis-linked HFE C282Y homozygous variant in the UK Biobank.

OBJECTIVES: C282Y genetic homozygosity is the main cause of the iron-overload disorder haemochromatosis. Musculoskeletal pain and arthropathy are common in haemochromatosis, but less is known about chondrocalcinosis (cartilage calcification) with the C282Y variant, especially in the community. We assessed knee chondrocalcinosis in intelligent dual-energy X-ray absorptiometer (iDXA) images from UK Biobank volunteers by HFE genotype. METHODS: Data were from 236 European genetic ancestry C282Y homozygotes and 236 age, sex, and body mass index (BMI)-matched controls with no C282Y alleles (48-80 y

Incidence of knee chondrocalcinosis and its risk factors in a community-based cohort.

AIM: Chondrocalcinosis results from deposition of calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate in articular cartilage. It is a relatively common radiographic finding of the joints, especially the knee. This study investigated the incidence and the risk factors for the development of knee chondrocalcinosis in the general population. METHOD: We used a prospective, ongoing cohort, composed of 5018 people, which was established in 2001 to investigate the epidemiologic characteristics of major chronic diseases in the Republic of Korea. The incidence of knee chondrocalcinosis was assessed per 1000 person-years,

Tendon calcifications of the hip adductors in chondrocalcinosis: a radiological study of 75 patients.

Studies on tendon involvement in articular chondrocalcinosis (ACC) are scarce, with little data focusing on its prevalence and characteristics. We carried out a radiological survey on 75 patients with ACC in order to establish the frequency and radiological appearance of calcific deposits at the origin of the adductor tendons on the ischium. In 19 of these patients, radiological visible linear calcifications compatible with chondrocalcinosis were observed at this site. There is a high correlation between the existence of pelvic tendon calcifications and the extension and intensity of calcific
