Endobronchial chondroma with ossification mimicking chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Endobronchial chondroma is a rare benign mesenchymal tumour, and its etiology remains not entirely understood. Due to the tumour's slow growth rate, the early stages of the disease often present with atypical or nonspecific clinical symptoms. Consequently, most cases are discovered incidentally during examinations. However, when the tumour enlarges to partially or completely obstruct the bronchus or exerts pressure on adjacent structures, patients may present with a range of respiratory symptoms including fever, cough, sputum production, chest pain, stridor, dyspnea, and hemoptysis

Resection of Cervical Juxtacortical Chondroma and Circumferential Spinal Stabilization for Kyphotic Deformity.

Chondromas are rare, benign tumors composed of cartilaginous tissue that mainly affect the metaphases of long tubular bones. Juxtacortical (periosteal) chondromas arise from the surface of periosteum and rarely affect the cervical spine. We present a patient with a spinal juxtacortical chondroma causing spinal cord compression and a cervical deformity treated with surgical resection and circumferential spinal fixation and stabilization. A 55-year-old female with past medical history of Crohn's disease with years of neck pain, balance issues, and left upper extremity radicular symptoms. Cervica

Loss of β-catenin induces multifocal periosteal chondroma-like masses in mice.

Osteochondromas and enchondromas are the most common tumors affecting the skeleton. Osteochondromas can occur as multiple lesions, such as those in patients with hereditary multiple exostoses. Unexpectedly, while studying the role of β-catenin in cartilage development, we found that its conditional deletion induces ectopic chondroma-like cartilage formation in mice. Postnatal ablation of β-catenin in cartilage induced lateral outgrowth of the growth plate within 2 weeks after ablation. The chondroma-like masses were present in the flanking periosteum by 5 weeks and persisted for more than 6 mo

Intracranial Chondroma of the Falx Cerebri: A Rare Case Report with Review of Literature.

Intracranial chondromas are extremely rare, benign slow-growing cartilaginous tumors mostly originating from embryonic rests at sphenoethmoidal region and sometimes can originate from the falx, convexity dura, the tentorium, the choroid plexus, or the brain parenchyma. In this article, we present a 22-year-old woman with a chondroma of dural origin. The clinical, radiological, and histopathological findings along with the operative findings and postoperative course are described as well as the pertinent literature regarding intracranial chondromas is reviewed.

Chondroma of the Falx Cerebri with Central Cystic Degeneration and Hemorrhage: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND Intracranial chondroma is a rare benign tumor that more commonly arises from the skull base. Chondroma arising from the falx cerebri is very rare, with only 19 cases previously reported in the literature. The imaging characteristics of intracranial chondroma and meningioma can be similar. Surgical excision and histology are required for the diagnosis. This report is of a case of intracranial chondroma that includes the imaging findings. The methods of diagnosis, management, and prognosis are discussed. CASE REPORT A 44-year-old man presented with episodes of severe headache. Magneti

Spherical coral-like synovial chondroma within a popliteal cyst: a case report.

Popliteal cysts are common lesions, primarily characterized by soft tissue swelling, which may occasionally present with calcifications or small osteochondromas, and can rarely lead to restricted movement. We report a case involving a spherical coral-like synovial chondroma located within a popliteal cyst, which caused significant pain and limited the flexion and extension of the knee joint. Notably, the appearance of the synovial chondroma was strikingly similar to that of spherical coral, and its distinctive imaging features are previously unreported in the literature. Following the excision

Intracranial Dural Parafalcine Chondroma: Case Report and Systematic Review of the Literature.

Intracranial chondromas are rare, benign neoplasms representing only 0.2%-0.3% of neoplastic intracranial lesions. They commonly originate from the skull base but can infrequently arise from the falx, convexity dura, or ventricular ependyma. Diagnosis requires histopathologic confirmation, as patients present with nonspecific symptoms related to mass effect, and imaging characteristics often resemble meningiomas, oligodendrogliomas, and vascular malformations. We describe the case of a patient harboring a parafalcine dural chondroma that was discovered incidentally and was managed surgically a

Para-Falcine Chondroma: An Entity of Unacquaintance-A Case Report and Review of Literature.

Intracranial chondroma is a benign tumor arising from the rests of embryonic cartilages in the dura or dural folds, choroid plexus or the brain parenchyma. It is rare intracranially, but when it does occur, it is predominantly located at the skull base. Among the cohort of intracranial chondroma, the para-falcine location is the rarest. We report a challenging diagnosis and successful management of this rare intracranial para-falcine chondroma in a 53-year-old female patient.

Cricoid chondroma presenting as upper airway obstruction: A report of a rare case.

Laryngeal chondroma is a very rare laryngeal tumor that commonly presents as dysphonia and dyspnea. A combination of clinical, histological, and radiological data has paramount importance for accurate diagnosis of this rare disease. It is difficult to differentiate laryngeal chondroma from chondrosarcoma solely based on radiological imaging; therefore, radiologists need to specify the origin of the tumor and the level of extension. Here, we describe a case of a 60-year-old male patient who presented with upper airway obstruction. Radiologic imaging with a contrast-enhanced CT scan of the neck

Subaxial cervical foraminal chondromas: case-based discussion on surgical management.

Cervical foraminal chondromas are benign lesions that may require surgical resection when symptomatic due to radicular and/or spinal cord compression. The aim of surgery is to achieve gross tumor removal while preserving neurological function and spine stability. The authors describe a case of subaxial foraminal chondroma with a systematic review of the literature on patients with cervical chondromas. In the reported case, the authors used a retrojugular approach to remove a C6-C7 right chondroma without the need for spinal stabilization. Literature review identified a total of 11 patients who

Chondroma of the diaphragm mimicking a giant liver tumor with calcification: report of a case.

Extraskeletal chondroma is an unusual benign tumor, which rarely arises in the diaphragm. We report a case of chondroma of the diaphragm in a 31-year-old woman. Initially, a benign liver tumor with calcification was suspected, based on pre and intraoperative examination findings. Although parts of the tumor were contiguous with the diaphragm, its connections with the diaphragm were much narrower than its connection with the liver, which suggested a liver tumor. Pathological examination subsequently revealed that the chondroma was contiguous with the diaphragm and that there was a distinct bord

Chondroma of the bony external auditory canal attached to the short process of the malleus.

A chondroma located in the external auditory canal is a rare finding. Here, we report the case of a 12-year-old girl who attended our clinic with complaints of a rustling sound in her left ear. Otoscopic examination revealed a tiny bone-like tumor protruding from the anterior wall of the bony external auditory canal, attached to the short process of the malleus. An audiogram revealed a conductive hearing loss in her left ear, although she did not notice it. After excision of the tumor through the ear canal, her complaints disappeared and her hearing recovered. Histologically, the tumor proved

[Contribution of computed tomography to the radiological clarification of a chondroma of the cervicothoracic spinal column].

On the basis of a chondroma which, as is well known, is very rarely found in the cervicothoracic spinal canal, the contribution made by computed tomography to the radiological identification of such benign tumours in explained. Morphology, localisation and incidence of chondromas and their differentiation against other tumours localised in the vertebral column, are discussed. The possibilities offered by the available diagnostic tools are compared with each other, also with regard to indication of operation and surgical planning.

Soft tissue chondroma mimicking "dumbbell" neurogenic tumour: a rare cause of lumbar radiculopathy.

Soft tissue chondromas are rare, benign extra-skeletal tumours of cartilaginous origin, which may rarely occur within the spinal canal. We report a patient who presented with left lumbar radiculopathy, and a peripherally-enhancing dumbbell shaped soft tissue mass involving both the intraspinal and extraspinal compartments on MRI. This was misdiagnosed as a neurogenic tumour and the patient underwent surgical removal. Histological examination revealed cartilaginous tissue. Although rare, soft tissue chondromas should be considered in the differential diagnosis of spinal dumbbell shaped tumours,

Solitary intracerebral chondroma without meningeal attachment: a case report with review of the literature.

Intracranial chondromas are rare, benign cartilaginous tumours that account for < 0.3% of primary intracranial tumours. They usually originate from the basal synchondrosis and are extradural though, extremely rarely, they can be intracerebral. Here the case of a 45-year old female is presented with a solitary intracerebral chondroma located in the right frontal lobe with no meningeal attachment. The epidemiology, aetiology, clinical behaviour, radiological features, histological features and treatment of the case are discussed with a review of previous cases reported in the literature.
