Sarcomatous transformation of osteochondroma of the coronoid process forming pseudoarthrosis with zygomatic arch mistaken for Jacob disease.

Osteochondromas are the most common benign osseous neoplasms, with a propensity to involve long bones. The involvement of the coronoid process is extremely rare, and osteochondromas of the coronoid process may form pseudoarticulations with the zygomatic arch when large, an entity that is extremely rare and termed as Jacob disease. Sarcomatous degeneration of osteochondroma of the coronoid process is an extremely rare entity and has not been described to date. Only 1 case of primary mesenchymal chondrosarcoma has been described. We present a case of a 24-year-old man with a chondrosarcoma of th

Simultaneous Malignant and Benign Nonepithelial Neoplasms of the Larynx-A Case Report and Literature Review.

Nonepithelial tumors of the larynx are relatively rare neoplasms of the head and neck. The chondrosarcoma, which develops commonly from cricoid and thyroid cartilage, stands for 0.2% of the laryngeal malignant neoplasms. The rhabdomyoma is even more uncommon benign tumor developing from the laryngeal striated muscles. The clinical manifestation and the treatment options depend on the histopathological evaluation, tumor localization, and its size. In presented case, the simultaneous occurrence of benign and malignant tumors of mesenchymal origin in the patient's larynx was provoking hoarseness,

Extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma: a case report.

Extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma is a rare mesenchymal neoplasm of uncertain differentiation, characterized morphologically by abundant myxoid stroma, a multinodular growth pattern, and uniform cells arranged in strands, clusters, and reticular networks. It usually occurs in adults in the fifth decade, most often in the deep soft tissues of the proximal extremities. The molecular hallmark of this tumor, present in over 90% of cases, is the fusion of NR4A3 with EWSR1 at 22q12.2 or TAF15 at 17q12. Many other tumors with uniform tumor cells embedded in a myxoid matrix can mimic Extraskeletal m

[Synchronous primary double: condrosarcoma and sarcoma high grade fusocelular associated with Maffucci syndrome].

Maffucci syndrome is characterized by the presence of multiple enchondromes and hemangiomas that can affect soft tissues and other organs. The risk of malignant transformation of lesions is 100% during the life of the individual, with chondrosarcoma being the most frequently associated malignant tumor. We present the case of a 44-year-old man diagnosed with Maffucci syndrome who developed a synchronous double primary: chondrosarcoma and high-grade multicenter fusocellular sarcoma of scapular and tricipital region, was treated with disarticulation interscapule-thoracic, presented accelerated pr

Dedifferentiated chondrosarcomas of the larynx: a report of two cases and review of the literature.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the long-term clinical outcome of dedifferentiated chondrosarcoma or chondrosarcoma with additional malignant mesenchymal component (CAMMC) of the larynx and compare the results with those of axial chondrosarcomas. STUDY DESIGN/METHODS: Two patients with CAMMC of the larynx (0.03%) were retrospectively identified within the archives of the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology between 1970 and 2001. We compared the clinical and histologic features of these two cases with those reported in the English literature (Medline 1966-2001) (Table I). RESULTS: Patient no. 1 was a 6

Carcinosarcoma of the ureter: report of a case with unusual histology and review of the literature.

Carcinosarcomas of the ureter are rare biphasic neoplasms, with distinct malignant epithelial and mesenchymal components. To the authors' knowledge there have been only 12 cases reported in the literature. Primary cartilaginous tumors of the ureter are also rare tumors. Thus far there has been a single case report of an extraskeletal mesenchymal chondrosarcoma of the ureter in the German literature. Herein a unique case is reported of ureteral carcinosarcoma in an 81-year-old woman presenting with gross hematuria in which the sarcomatous component had extraskeletal mesenchymal chondrosarcomato

Primary chondrosarcoma of breast--cytology with histopathological correlation: a rare case report with review of literature.

Malignant mesenchymal tumors of the breast other than angiosarcoma are extremely rare and comprise <0.5% of breast tumors. Primary chondrosarcoma of the breast is an extremely rare entity and only 10 cases are reported as single case reports in literature until date. A diagnosis of primary mammary sarcoma can be established only after excluding metaplastic carcinomas and malignant phyllodes by extensive sampling for evidence of in situ or invasive carcinoma. Here, we report a primary chondrosarcoma of breast in a 55-year-old lady diagnosed precisely on fine-needle aspiration cytology and confi

Primary extradural neoplasms causing spinal cord compression.

Thirteen patients presented primary extradural neoplasms compressing the spinal cord and/or roots in a four year period. Laminectomy and tumour excision or biopsy were carried out in twelve patients and transthoracic resection in the one remaining. Six tumours were benign; two were neurofibromata associated with von Recklinghausen's disease; two were osteochondromata; and there were single cases of cavernous haemangioma and aneurysmal bone cyst. All patients are alive and well; follow-up ranges between 1.3 an 8.5 years post-operation. Among the malignant neoplasms there were three malignant ly

Laryngeal chondrosarcomas: a clinicopathologic study of 11 cases, including two "dedifferentiated" chondrosarcomas.

Laryngeal chondrosarcomas are uncommon, and those that contain a distinct, nonchondroid, high-grade spindle cell sarcoma (the so-called "dedifferentiated" chondrosarcoma or chondrosarcoma with additional malignant mesenchymal component [CAMMC]) are extremely rare. Laryngeal CAMMC merit special attention, as CAMMC in other sites portends a poor prognosis. Eleven patients with laryngeal chondrosarcomas are reported on; 2 of these patients had CAMMC. On follow-up, 3 of the 11 patients had recurrences. The first had recurrence 4 and 11 years after tumor enucleation; that patient died disease free

Small round cell lesions of the bone: Diagnostic approach, differential diagnoses and impact on treatment.

Small round cell lesions of the bone encompass a heterogeneous group of tumors and tumor-like lesions, including Ewing sarcoma, small cell osteosarcoma, mesenchymal chondrosarcoma, neuroblastoma, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL), "Ewing-like" undifferentiated round cell sarcomas, metastasizing small cell carcinoma, along with plasma cell dyscrasia and Langerhan's cell histiocytosis. At the same time, there are tumor mimics, for example, chronic osteomyelitis, which has overlapping radiologic features with Ewing sarcoma and a primary intraosseous NHL. An exact diagnosis necessitates integration of

Multi-organ metastases of primary chondrosarcoma of the mammary gland of a spayed Toy Poodle.

We report the clinical and histopathological findings associated with multi-organ metastases of primary mammary chondrosarcoma in a 12-year-old spayed female Toy Poodle. At post-mortem examination, multifocal, sharply demarcated, grey-white to bright brown, round nodules of variable size were randomly distributed in the lungs, myocardium, liver, pancreas, spleen, intestinal tract and kidneys. Histologically, immature cartilage structures and primitive mesenchymal cells were seen in these organs. Neoplastic cells located in the cartilaginous basophilic extracellular matrix had cytoplasmic vacuo

Chondrosarcoma Involving the Ciliary Body and Choroid.

A 56-year-old man with a history of hereditary multiple exostoses and secondary low-grade chondrosarcomas was diagnosed with a pigmented mass in his left eye involving the inferonasal ciliary body and peripheral choroid following a superotemporal visual field defect. The intraocular mass continued to grow following brachytherapy, prompting enucleation that revealed a low-grade chondrosarcoma (CHS), similar in appearance to his prior skeletal neoplasms. There are 3 reports of CHS metastatic to the eye, and all 3 individuals had metastases to the lungs and other body sites before or at the time

An Integrated Clinical Genomic and Transcriptomic Subgrouping of Central Chondrosarcoma.

Central conventional chondrosarcoma, a malignant cartilage-producing bone tumor, is the second most common bone sarcoma. Chondrosarcomas are histologically graded, which is so far the best predictor of survival. Early mutations in isocitrate dehydrogenase 1 (IDH1) and IDH2 genes are frequent, leading to the production of the oncometabolite D-2-hydroxyglutarate, which affects DNA methylation, resulting in a preferred chondrogenic differentiation over osteogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells, which are currently considered the precursor cells of chondrosarcoma. DNA methylation profil

Update on the imaging features of the enchondromatosis syndromes.

Ollier disease and Maffucci syndrome are the commonest enchondromatosis subtypes, arising from non-hereditary mutations in the IDH1 and IDH2 genes, presenting in childhood and being characterised by multiple enchondromas. Maffucci syndrome also includes multiple soft tissue haemangiomas. Aside from developing bony masses, osseous deformity and pathological fracture, ~ 40% of these patients develop secondary central chondrosarcoma, and there is increased risk of non-skeletal malignancies such as gliomas and mesenchymal ovarian tumours. In this review, we outline the molecular genetics, patholog

Chondrosarcoma of the scapula: long-term oncologic outcome.

BACKGROUND: Chondrosarcoma is the second most common primary sarcoma of bone. It often develops within flat bones, such as the pelvis, ribs, and scapula. In the current study, the authors reviewed the surgical experience and long-term oncologic outcomes of patients with chondrosarcoma arising in the scapula. METHODS: The medical records of 29 consecutive patients with chondrosarcoma of the scapula were reviewed. The patients were treated between 1954 and 1994. All patients had localized disease at the time of presentation. The tumors were classified histologically as Grade 1 (10 patients), Gr

[Primary chondrosarcoma of the ureter].

A 62-year-old patient had complained of recurring colicky pain in the right renal bed, seven days before he was admitted as an inpatient. Macrohaematuria was an accompanying sign during one of these attacks. Sonography revealed right urinary obstruction of medium severity; the right kidney could not be demonstrated by urography. Since CT did not yield any clue, retrograde ureteropyelography was performed. An obstructive tumour of the right ureter was identified. This tumour, which had a length of 3.5 cm and a width of 1.2 cm, was completely resected by ureteronephrectomy. Examination revealed

SATB2 Expression Is Sensitive but Not Specific for Osteosarcomatous Components of Gynecologic Tract Carcinosarcomas: A Clinicopathologic Study of 60 Cases.

The novel marker special AT-rich sequence binding protein (SATB2) is highly sensitive for mesenchymal tumors with osteoblastic differentiation. However, SATB2 expression in gynecologic tract carcinosarcoma has not been previously explored. Given the potential prognostic and therapeutic implications of heterologous carcinosarcoma in the gynecologic tract, this study investigates the utility of SATB2 in identifying osteosarcomatous elements. A multi-institution database review identified consecutive cases of gynecologic tract carcinosarcoma including both heterologous and homologous types. Clini

Mandibular Chondrosarcoma Mimicking an Odontogenic Infection: A Case Report.

Chondrosarcoma is a malignant mesenchymal tumor exhibiting cartilaginous differentiation. It is a relatively common primary malignant bone tumor, but its occurrence in the jaws is rare, particularly in the mandible. The clinical presentation may be nonspecific and may mimic odontogenic or inflammatory conditions, potentially resulting in delayed diagnosis. We report the case of a 37-year-old woman with mandibular chondrosarcoma initially presenting with persistent pain in the region of the right mandibular first molar. The lesion was initially managed as a dental condition, and endodontic trea
