Choroid plexus papilloma in a Scottish highland cow.

Choroid plexus papilloma, a rare tumour in bovids, arising from the roof of the third ventricle was diagnosed at necropsy in a 4-year-old Scottish Highland cow. The animal presented with a 2-month history of progressive ataxia, ventromedial strabismus, and hyperaesthesia. Neoplastic epithelial cells were positive immunohistochemically for pancytokeratin and S-100, and negative for GFAP. Ultrastructurally, epithelial cells were characterized by intercellular junctions, zonulae adherens, and zonulae occludens. Neither cilia nor basal bodies were identified. The gross, microscopical, immunohistoc

Cystic choroid plexus papilloma with multiple mural nodules in an infant.

BACKGROUND: A case of a 13-month-old male infant with progressive increase in head circumference, neurodevelopmental delay, and episodic generalized seizures is reported. He had a history of increase in intracranial pressure because of an arachnoid cyst at the age of 2 months which was managed by cystoperitoneal shunting, but the symptoms were still progressive. DISCUSSION: Magnetic resonance imaging revealed an intraventricular cystic tumor with intensely enhancing mural nodules. He underwent surgery and the cyst with the nodules was totally excised. Histopathological findings confirmed the

The cytopathology of reactions to ventricular shunts.

A common cause of malfunctioning ventricular shunts is the occlusion of either tip by a variety of normal or reactive tissues and foreign substances. A six-year-old girl with communicating hydrocephalus and a meningomyelocele, a 48-year-old man with an ependymoma and an 11-year-old boy with a pineal germinoma had multinucleated histiocytic giant cells and ependymal cells in cerebrospinal fluid obtained from their ventricular shunts. These cellular changes were interpreted as the cytologic counterpart of the foreign-body inflammatory reactions often seen histologically on occluded shunt tips. N

From the archives of the AFIP: a comprehensive review of fetal tumors with pathologic correlation.

Fetal tumors are a diverse group of neoplasms, which are unique in their histologic characteristics, anatomic distribution, and pathophysiology. The biologic behavior of tumors in the fetus may differ dramatically compared with that of the same tumor detected later in life. Teratomas are the dominant histologic type and constitute the majority of both extracranial and intracranial neoplasms. Although often histologically mature, they may prove lethal because of their location and metabolic demands on the fetus. Large solid tumors may lead to cardiovascular compromise and hydrops fetalis. Tumors of Choroid Plexus and Other Ventricular Tumors.

Tumors arising inside the ventricular system are rare but represent a difficult diagnostic and therapeutic challenge. They usually are diagnosed when reaching a big volume and tend to affect young children. There is a wide broad of differential diagnoses with significant variability in anatomical aspects and tumor type. Differential diagnosis in tumor type includes choroid plexus tumors (papillomas and carcinomas), ependymomas, subependymomas, subependymal giant cell astrocytomas (SEGAs), central neurocytomas, meningiomas, and metastases. Choroid plexus tumors, ependymomas of the posterior fos

Hypertensive nonobstructive hydrocephalus as main magnetic resonance imaging feature in a dog with disseminated choroid plexus carcinomatosis.

Obstructive or nonobstructive hypertensive hydrocephalus is reported in choroid plexus tumors. Choroid plexus tumors typically present as T2-weighted hyperintense intraventricular masses with occasional cerebrospinal fluid-drop metastasis. Acquired neoplastic nonobstructive hydrocephalus without visible mass lesion in magnetic resonance imaging is not reported in dogs. A 4.5-year-old Rhodesian Ridgeback presented with reduced mental status, unilaterally absent pupillary light reflex, and neck pain. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a nonobstructive hydrocephalus and widened lumbar subarachno

[Choroid plexus carcinoma of the foramen Luschka: a case report].

Choroid plexus carcinoma(CPC) is a rare intracranial neoplasm that usually arises in the supra-tentorial region of infants. We report an adult case of CPC that arose in the foramen Luschka. A 61-year-old woman presented with a 10-year history of dysarthria. CT showed an iso- to slightly high density mass in the left foramen Luschka. The tumor appeared as a low- to iso-intensity area in T1-weighted MR images, and as an iso- to high-intensity area in T2-weighted images. The tumor showed homogeneous enhancement with the administration of contrast medium. Imaging findings were non-specific and the

Chordoid glioma of the third ventricle: four cases including one case with papillary features.

Chordoid glioma is a rare, slowly growing tumor of the CNS, which is always located in the third ventricle of adults. Chordoid glioma has classic histological features consisting of clusters and cords of epithelioid tumor cells embedded within a mucinous stroma with rich lymphoplasmacytic infiltrate. The important distinctive immunohistochemical feature of this neoplasm is strong and diffuse reactivity for GFAP. Here, we report four cases of chordoid glioma that occupied the anterior portion of the third ventricle or suprasellar region. These four cases were all adult females with almost typic

Neurofibromatosis type 2. Case report.

A case of a 24-year-old woman with peripheral paresis of the facial nerve, balance disturbance, hearing loss and epileptic seizures for many years is presented. At time of admission to hospital cerebral magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed several large tumors situated supra- and infratentorially. Histological examination of the operated tumors revealed bilateral acoustic schwannomas in the cerebellopontine angles and mixed meningioma in the others. The patient was diagnosed as neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2) according to clinical criteria for neurofibromatoses. Several months after the last

Activation of Wnt/β-catenin signaling is critical for the tumorigenesis of choroid plexus.

BACKGROUND: The choroid plexus (ChP) is the secretory epithelial structure located in the brain ventricles. Choroid plexus tumors (CPTs) are rare neoplasms predominantly occurring in young patients with intensified malignancy in children. CPT treatment is hindered by insufficient knowledge of tumor pathology and the limited availability of valid models. METHODS: Genomic and transcriptomic data from CPT patients were analyzed to identify the putative pathological pathway. Cellular and molecular techniques were employed to validate bioinformatic results in CPT patient samples. Pharmacologic inh

Molecular heterogeneity of pediatric choroid plexus carcinomas determines the distinctions in clinical course and prognosis.

BACKGROUND: Choroid plexus carcinomas (CPCs) are rare aggressive pediatric tumors of the brain with no treatment standards. Genetic profiling of CPCs is often confined to possible association with Li-Fraumeni syndrome, though only about a half of CPCs develop from syndromic predispositions. Whole-chromosome gains and losses typical of CPCs reflect genomic instability of these tumors, but only partially explain the aggressive clinical course. METHODS: This retrospective study enrolled 25 pediatric patients with CPC, receiving treatment between January 2009 and June 2022. Molecular-genetic test

Consensus guidelines for the management of primary supra-tentorial intraventricular tumour for low- and middle-income countries.

Almost any primary or metastatic brain tumour can manifest in intraventricular (IV) locations. These tumours may either originate within the ventricular system or extend into the IV space through growth. Such neoplasms represent a broad spectrum, with supratentorial IV tumours forming a heterogeneous group. This group includes primary ependymal tumours, central neurocytomas, choroid plexus tumours, and notably, meningiomas, as well as a variety of non-neoplastic, benign, glial, and metastatic lesions that can secondarily invade the IV compartment. Often presenting with nonspecific symptoms, th

The specificity of ultrasound in the detection of fetal intracranial tumors.

AIMS: To evaluate the specificity of ultrasound in identifying fetal brain neoplasms and its accuracy in the diagnosis of the tumor's histological type. METHODS: A retrospective evaluation of 7 cases of fetal brain tumors occurred at our unit in the period between January 92 and June 98 has been performed. All prenatal ultrasonographic diagnoses were compared with the postnatal findings on the aborted fetuses (post-mortem examination) or on the newborns (MRI or post-mortem examination). RESULTS: In 6 out of 7 cases the antenatal ultrasonographic diagnosis of brain tumor was confirmed postnat

[Primary intracranial tumors: analysis of a series of consecutive autopsies and biopsies].

A retrospective study of primary intracranial tumors found in 19.760 consecutive autopsies and 72.972 consecutive biopsies during a period of over 41 years was carried out. Two hundred and five neoplasms comprising 69,7% of the primary intracranial tumors were located in the supratentorial compartment whereas 84 tumors (28,6%) were infratentorial in site. Gliomas constituted the largest group of primary tumors comprising 60,9% of the intracranial primary neoplasms. Most of gliomas were found in the cerebral hemispheres, particularly in the frontal lobes. Of the total number of gliomas 40,2% we

Atypical Choroid Plexus Papilloma in a Newborn, Misdiagnosed by Ultrasound and MRI: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND Choroid plexus tumors (CPTs) are rare brain tumors that originate from the choroid plexus epithelium and range from low-grade papillomas to overtly malignant carcinomas, and can occur in newborns. According to the World Health Organization's histological classification, atypical choroid plexus papilloma (aCPP) is an intermediate-grade (Grade II) lesion characterized by an increased mitotic rate. It is difficult to distinguish CPTs on imaging during the early stages. The present article aims to increase awareness and vigilance regarding CPTs. CASE REPORT A newborn girl was admitted t
