Bacterial proteolysis of casein leading to UHT milk gelation: An applicative study.

Heat-stable peptidases released in refrigerated raw milk by psychrotrophic bacteria are responsible for UHT milk gelation. K-casein-derived caseinomacropeptides, identified by mass spectrometry, were constantly detected in gelled milk by capillary electrophoresis. Strains of Pseudomonas fluorescens, Ps. poae and Chryseobacterium joostei, selected among aprX-positive strains from raw milk, were incubated in milk up to 6 days at 4 °C before sterilization (98 °C/4 min). Samples were then stored at 25 or 40 °C, visually observed for gelation, and analysed for presence of caseinomacropeptides throu

Single mutations of ketoreductase ChKRED20 enhance the bioreductive production of (1S)-2-chloro-1-(3, 4-difluorophenyl) ethanol.

(1S)-2-chloro-1-(3, 4-difluorophenyl) ethanol ((S)-CFPL) is an intermediate for the drug ticagrelor, and is manufactured via chemical approaches. To develop a biocatalytic solution to (S)-CFPL, an inventory of ketoreductases from Chryseobacterium sp. CA49 were rescreened, and ChKRED20 was found to catalyze the reduction of the ketone precursor with excellent stereoselectivity (>99 % ee). After screening an error-prone PCR library of the wild-type ChKRED20, two mutants, each bearing a single amino acid substitution of H145L or L205M, were identified with significantly increased activity. Then,

Physical bioturbation coupled with gut-substrate cross-inoculation: A dual-pathway mechanism for enhanced acetochlor degradation in vermifilters.

To mitigate acetochlor (ACT) diffuse pollution in the black soil region of Northeast China, a black soil-gravel biofilter was constructed to investigate how earthworm (Eisenia fetida) bioturbation enhances ACT degradation through coupled physical remodeling and micro-ecological regulation. At an HRT of 72 h, the vermifilter achieved 85.3% aqueous ACT removal and 66.4% solid-phase ACT removal rate, significantly outperforming planted and blank biofilters. In situ Micro-CT showed that earthworm burrowing increased matrix pore connectivity to 20 times that of the blank biofilter, reducing mass tr

Effect of static magnetic field on trichloroethylene removal in a biotrickling filter.

A laboratory-scale biotrickling filter combined with a magnetic field (MF-BTF) and a single BTF (S-BTF) were set up to treat trichloroethylene (TCE) gas. The influences of phenol alone and NaAc-phenol as co-substrates and different MF intensities were investigated. At low MF intensity, MF-BTF displayed better performance with 0.20g/L of phenol, 53.6-337.1mg/m3 of TCE, and empty bed residence times of 202.5s. The performances followed the order MF-BTF (60.0mT)>MF-BTF (30.0mT)>S-BTF (0mT)>MF-BTF (130.0mT), and the removal efficiencies (REs) and maximum elimination capacities (ECs) corresponded t

Indigenous bacteria, an excellent reservoir of functional plant growth promoters for enhancing duckweed biomass yield on site.

The advantages of aquatic biomass production using wastewater as a cost-free fertilizer have recently been highlighted. Here, we report a successful study in which duckweed, Lemna gibba, biomass production in a food factory effluent containing low nitrogen and high salts was enhanced by employing customized plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB). Two common PGPB strains previously obtained from natural pond water, Acinetobacter calcoaceticus P23 and Pseudomonas fulva Ps6, hardly promoted the growth of duckweed; on the contrary, they inhibited its growth in treated factory wastewater, far diffe

Elizabethkingia Species as an Emerging Pathogen: A Comprehensive Review of Clinical and Microbiological Evidence.

Elizabethkingia species are rare but increasingly recognised Gram-negative pathogens linked to healthcare-associated transmission, intrinsic multidrug resistance, and severe infection in vulnerable hosts. We performed a comprehensive review of human Elizabethkingia infections by systematically searching PubMed on 18 October 2025 and included English-language case reports, case series, and outbreak investigations; species were analysed as reported (legacy nomenclature retained), and adults were defined as ≥18 years. In total, 374 studies were included (300 case reports, 41 case series, 33 outbr

Bacterial diversity of wild-caught Lutzomyia longipalpis (a vector of zoonotic visceral leishmaniasis in Brazil) under distinct physiological conditions by metagenomics analysis.

BACKGROUND: The leishmaniases are a group of diseases caused by protozoans of the genus Leishmania, which are transmitted by the bite of phlebotomine sand flies. In the New World, Lutzomyia longipalpis is the most important vector of visceral leishmaniasis and is a proven vector for Leishmania infantum chagasi in Brazil. During development within the vector, Leishmania can interact with a variety of microorganisms such as fungi and bacteria. The presence of bacteria in the midgut of sand flies can influence the development and survival of the parasite. RESULTS: The bacteria-targeted metagenom

Endoparasites infecting exotic captive amphibian pet and zoo animals (Anura, Caudata) in Germany.

Alongside exotic reptiles, amphibians, such as toads, frogs, salamanders, and newts, are nowadays considered popular pets worldwide. As reported for other exotic pet animals, amphibians are known to harbor numerous gastrointestinal parasites. Nonetheless, very little data are available on captive amphibian parasitic diseases. In this study, we applied direct saline fecal smears (DSFS) to examine in total 161 stool samples from 41 different amphibian species belonging to the orders Anura and Caudata. In addition, carbolfuchsin-smear (CFS) staining (n = 74 samples) was used to detect amphibian C

Skin microbiota of fallow deer: Composition, diversity, and influencing factors.

Understanding the microbiota of wild animals can contribute to the monitoring of population health or habitat changes. The skin microbiota of fallow deer remains poorly characterized and represents a gap in current veterinary microbiology research. The aim of this study was to analyse skin microbiota of fifteen clinically healthy fallow deer using next-generation sequencing. Genomic DNA was extracted from superficial skin swabs collected from three anatomical sites per individual (n = 45 samples) and sequenced targeting the V3-V4 region of the bacterial 16S rRNA gene using Illumina sequencing.

Molecular identification and phenotypic characterization of Flavobacterium spp. from Brazilian aquaculture fish.

The genus Flavobacterium comprises several emerging and reemerging fish pathogens responsible for significant economic losses in global aquaculture. In this study, molecular and phenotypic characterization of isolates from Brazilian native fish and tilapia revealed significant taxonomic diversity, with Flavobacterium oreochromis representing most of the isolates (six of eleven isolates). Other identified species included F. davisii, F. indicum, F. inkyongense, and Chryseobacterium indicum, with metadata further linking several atypical isolates to clinical disease. Results showed a clear tempe

Cadmium exposure increases insecticide sensitivity of Sogatella furcifera (Horváth) by decrease the diversity of symbiotic bacteria.

Cadmium (Cd) is a prevalent environmental pollutant in agricultural ecosystems, particularly within paddy ecosystems, is readily absorbed by rice and enter herbivorous insects through the food chain, thereby influencing the implementation of integrated pest management strategies. However, the effect and mechanisms of Cd exposure on the sensitivity of pests in paddy to insecticides remain unclear. Therefore, this study investigated the effects of Cd exposure on the fitness, insecticide sensitivity and symbiotic bacteria of Sogatella furcifera (Horváth) (white-backed planthopper, WBPH). Whole-genome sequence and resistance determinants of four Elizabethkingia anophelis clinical isolates collected in Hanoi, Vietnam.

Four isolates of the opportunistic pathogen Elizabethkingia anophelis were identified for the first time in a Vietnamese hospital and underwent antimicrobial susceptibility testing and genomic characterization by whole-genome sequencing. Complete, fully circularized genome sequences were obtained for all four isolates. Average Nucleotide Identity analysis and single nucleotide polymorphism phylogenetic analysis on the core genome showed that three of the four isolates were genetically distinct, ruling out the hypothesis of a single strain emergence. A Case Series of Elizabethkingia meningosepticum Bacteremia in the Cancer Population.

Elizabethkingia meningosepticum (E. meningosepticum) is a ubiquitous microorganism previously known as Chryseobacterium meningosepticum. It is emerging as a pathogen responsible for bacteremia in the immunocompromised population, particularly in cancer patients and those with a history of prolonged hospital stay and frequent instrumentations. A retrospective chart review of all cases over 10 years at the Moffitt Cancer Center showed a total of three patients with E. meningosepticum infection. The first patient (history of multiple myeloma) underwent endoscopy complicated by aspiration pneumoni

A propeptide toolbox for secretion optimization of Flavobacterium meningosepticum endopeptidase in Lactococcus lactis.

BACKGROUND: Lactic acid bacteria are a family of "generally regarded as safe" organisms traditionally used for food fermentation. In recent years, they have started to emerge as potential chassis for heterologous protein production. And more recently, due to their beneficial properties in the gut, they have been examined as potential candidates for mucosal delivery vectors, especially for acid-sensitive enzymes. One such application would be the delivery of gluten-digesting endopeptidases for the treatment of celiac disease. To facilitate these applications, an efficient recombinant protein ex

Isolation and mechanistic study of novel PLA-degrading bacteria from plastic manufacturing soil.

Petroleum-derived plastic pollution has become increasingly severe, stimulating the application demand for biodegradable polylactic acid (PLA). Nevertheless, the slow natural degradation rate of PLA limits its large-scale practical application. In this study, two potential novel strains with PLLA-degrading capacity, Chryseobacterium sp. L42 and Pedobacter sp. D55, were successfully isolated based on microbial community analysis of soil from plastic-manufacturing plants, combined with transparent-circle assays and PLA-film degradation tests.
